  • This absurd railway system, invented by Frenchman Charles Lartigue, was adopted in Ireland in 1888 running for 9 miles between the towns of Listowel and Ballybunion. Here we see a recreation of the monorail filmed for our Classic Train Journeys of Ireland video narrated by Henry Kelly.

Excellent video - enjoyable and informative. To have sold that system, Charles Lartigue must have been a salesman par excellence, and blessed with the authentic gift of the blarney.

It is since watching this on Classic Train Journey's I have been wanting to go to Listowel to ride this replica train. It is still on my bucket list and I will ride it one day.

The only Monorail I've been on was at Butlins, Skegness! It was 14ft off the ground, at least this was much closer to the surface!
