    I have Narcolepsy with Catsplexy, and have wished we had short term hotels like Japan for a while. Traveling for work sucks when you land 5 hours before check-in to the event hotel. Im exhausted from travel, my schedules thrown off, and I want go chill at least if not take a nap. Doctors actually basically prescribe us 15-20 minute naps to prevent sleep attacks. (Its not like the movies lol).
    Being able to schedule ahead of time would ensure there's space for me in an expected situation like that. You make a great point though. There are many times I'd like/need one the day-of. I actually am entirely capable of driving long distances. Just like healthy drivers, I pull over if I start to get sleepy. But the only option I have is to sleep in my car. I'm honestly surprised rest stops don't have short term hotels.
    Even as short as a 15 minute nap can "refresh" us (its not refreshing really because of the permanent tiredness, but youre back to your base energy level at that time). But sometimes it can even be hard for a Narcoleptic to sleep if youre uncomfortable.
    Since my condition got worse in 2021, and I was finally diagnosed in 2022, I've become increasingly aware that, for a country full of tired people, we have no places to accommodate those that need a rest.

    • @lizzyblitz07
      @lizzyblitz07 2 месяца назад +4

      @@Man-ej6uv that's so interesting. Technically, the cataplexy alone should've bumped you to an N1 diagnosis, but there's that whole gray area with IH so different specialists handle it differently. Specialists and researchers (and especially people with cataplexy and 12+ hours of sleep) are starting to discuss/explore if they should be separate diagnoses that you can have together. I think we're working toward that, but time will tell.
      Whatever you are comfortable with is valid, I'm not trying to say you're wrong, I just wanted to share in case you weren't aware of this discourse, and the fact that many top specialists would diagnose you with N1 and unofficially also IH. I've done a crap load of research into it, talked to others in this limbo, and I see one of the top specialists in the country so I like to share just for the sake of more discussion/info being out there

    • @lizzyblitz07
      @lizzyblitz07 2 месяца назад +3

      @@Man-ej6uv and I totally get it. I have had to crouch down a few times for cataplexy attacks, but I often don't have enough warning to sit. It's when I get into cycling attacks, one after another, that I have a break for a sec and find a place to sit. Unfortunately that has been in the middle of a supermarket, the lobby of a mechanic, and a few other odd spaces. The more exhausted you are, the more likely attacks are too, so nap places are really important. I feel it's intentional that there aren't many public places to rest. There have been waves of anti-homeless architecture in the past couple decades and especially recently.

Even with planes, you may take a red eye, get in at 5am and then have no hotel option because check in isn’t until 3 or 4pm.

    Marriott brand hotels like Double Tree usually "charge" $50 for incidentals. It's a soft hold in addition to the base price, and once you check out as long as there was no damage to the room the $50 comes back. So your base $152.07 was the only thing that was actually charged because there wasn't damage to the room.
    They're called distinctive brands, which is just a fancy way of saying "work hotels". You don't get the fancy bell carts and such like big brands, but they focus on being quick and quiet locations to take a few calls, hold a meeting or two, take a nap and leave. Hotels like this work perfectly for Nappr, but the issue is how many of these day rate stays are coming in, because it can back up the flow of the hotel's operations very quickly.

    I feel like a better system would maybe be teaming up with convention centres, hotels, malls, gyms, and other large commercial spaces to install nap pods or something similar that are findable and bookable on the app. Spaces big enough to lie down in, maybe store some luggage and that you could leave secured and return to. I just think $150 for a 4 hour block is not doable for the many people who might actually want to take advantage of these as a rest/refresh location.
    The current system to me just screams daytime hookup (which you do you boo), and as you said day rates are already a thing and you don’t really need this app to find/book them. In an Airbnb type setting I’d definitely be concerned about cleanliness with that much potential turnover.

    I am sure there’s some not-great reason for that level of exhaustion but I just try to think of what would happen if I fell asleep over my laptop back home in the US. 5 minutes after passing out every single thing would be stolen from me and I’d probably have the cops called on me for loitering. That would give them an edge because using their app would be easier than booking a day rate at a hotel, as it is there’s no difference in just doing that.

Being able to get into a room and lower all the crazy amounts of stimuli going on is so important. Take a hot bath if my back is bad, so some stretches.
    Traveling is really hard for me because if my flight gets in at noon and I’ve been up all night, I really need to rest. But my room isn’t available.
    There’s not really anywhere for me to go to be away from it all and decompress so my pain doesn’t keep spiking. (I also have sensory processing issues and anxiety, so this is just my experience, but still).

The only thing you would be really juggling is when you allow people to book because some people might want to extend this time because they Stay by the hour so you would have to rent out a timeslot only when you start or finish cleaning a room

    the $152 to $202 is most likely a $50 deposit that gets returned when you leave. since you left day of it might have been cancelled before the actual charge had gone through

      Came here to say that. It's a hold. Every hotel does it, and it comes off when you check out.

    For someone perpetually sleepy, they could maybe do sleep pods like in some airports? It's for one pax

    I'm surprised how the turnover rate for rooms will affect the housekeepers was not brought up as a concern. From what I understand, room cleaning is usually done shortly after check out and is done by the time of check-in when it comes to regular stays. This app seems to work by scheduling these hotel rooms to be occupied when they'd typically be getting cleaned (aka you'll probs get woken up by the loud vacuums, lol), and they'll also need additional cleaning since it's going between 3 or 4 guests instead of just one or two.
    This is also probably why you can't schedule same day and why you get changed more--- they have to make sure they still have the housekeeping staff on property to clean up after you leave, and a lot of housekeepers I've talked to like to stick to their schedule and flip the rooms they're assigned and (possibly) get top leave early. Having a stream of people trickling in and out at any hour because they've they've reserved a room through nappr seems like the housekeeping team will have to do extra work and possibly even rush to turn over rooms, resulting in negative experiences. Idk tho lol

    I wonder of this would work more on a 'third space' model. Providing a third space day rental, for people to work from or for someone to toss their stuff and keep it secure while traveling around a certain area for a day.
    I could see myself wanting to leave stuff ive bought on a touristy type day trip somewhere 'safe' while I head to different locations. Could also provide parking for when I want to travel without my car on a day trip - i like to use public transport of im just exploring a new place.

    i have narcolepsy so i could probably get some use out of this, but that’s mainly because i plan my naps. i feel like most people don’t really plan when they’re gonna nap. i definitely didn’t before i was diagnosed, so i would’ve just suddenly been super sleepy and had nowhere to go

    There are a few hotels in my area you can easialy just book for a few hours but people generally don't use them for napping.
    Of course you use them just for a nap the Hotel doesn't care as long as you pay.

    Most people checking out of hotels are out around 9 am. Check-in for hotels is usually 3pm. This is just a cash grab for hotels to get more money while those rooms are usually empty.

    just started the vid and not sure where this is going fully yet lol... BUT it's not $150, but I used to wake up at the latest possible moment, consider taking the train to work, and decide to take an uber to work, just so I could "sleep in" which meant snoozing for 15-20 more minutes... I feel like on a dollar per minute basis, that was even more egregious nonsense behavior 😓

    I'm not sure if I understood this right, but is the goal of Napr to also allow AirBnB hosts to rent out rooms for a few hours at a time? I just don't see anyone actually taking them up on that, because independent renters don't have the private security hired to kick people out if they refuse to leave after a few hours. I can see a lot of people purposely booking the room "for a nap" just to stay the night for a cheap rate. This isn't to criticize people who can't afford a roof to sleep under and just want one for a cheaper price, but homeless/unhoused people aren't the ones that I'm concerned about, I've noticed that they tend to be some of the most honest and polite people that I've ever had the pleasure to interact with. It's usually middle class Karens (both male and female of any age) who want a cheap vacation that do shit like this the most.

    i have a feeling that the day price will go down some whenever all the events are done here in austin, this is definitely something i would book for the day just to be alone for a few hours and not be in my car
