Why you should watch The West Wing

- Just thought I'd make a quick teaser for The West Wing. It's a slightly edited-down version of the intro to the Season 2 episode "Bad Moon Rising."
Now, you might be wondering "who doesn't know about the West Wing being the greatest show on earth?" Yeah, I know it's a stretch, but how else would you explain that people voluntarily subject themselves to the mindless, agonizing torture that passes for "entertainment" now that Sorkin is off the air?
Please get him doing a new show. He's the reason TV was invented.
Best Chekhov's gavel ever.
Those two are bots, I wouldn't search for that website.
Well that's a bit strange that he would just start talking about a gavel given to his father by former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis and then subsequently mention that his dictaphone gets stuck on record and won't stop recording things. Where is this all going? Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Maybe my favorite opening scene in the show's history.
Nobody, nobody, nobody does a cold open like Aaron Sorkin.
I like the opening of Galileo 5.
Even just the sound effect of Oliver smashing the tape recorder is hilarious.............(8^)
@@bufordpusser424 Squeek!
For me?
ruclips.net/video/608S3oOv_ss/видео.html
"he's got a bigger office than me."
"that matter less to me."
Not bigger, nicer.
I have been enamoured with Oliver Platt since he played Portos in The Three Musketeers (1993).
"Now, this axe was a gift to me from the Czarina of Tokyo."
" This sash was a gift to me from the Queen of America."
“Champagne?”
“Porthos, we’re in the middle of a chase!”
“You’re right. Something red.”
Not enamored myself, but a big fan nonetheless. There is something about his voice and the delivery of his lines that just pulls you in and makes you want to listen. I always thought Oliver could have and should have been a bigger character on the show.
@@MHLegacy But he's gone on to be an absolute star in the last 20 years!
I love how Leo just stands there all cool when he smashes the dictaphone. There is no reaction at all!
Leo's seen some shit.
It is because Leo would have done the same thing.
It's because Leo is also from Chicago like Babish (watch this cold open from the beginning of the episode and you'll know what I mean) 😂
isn't Babbish supposed to be Tribbey's replacement? Babbish and his hammer is pretty mild-mannered compared to Tribbey and his cricket bat hahaha
Leo's a wartime consigliere
"Mr. President..."
"I'm easing in."
Thank you... the subtitles made no sense, but I couldn't quite catch it!
Oliver babich and Lionel Tribby and associates. Theres a spin off.
With the cricket bat and the big hammer.
I'd watch the hell out of that.
And yes, the hammer and bat need to be part of the firm's logo....
Only if Ainsley Hayes is one of the associates.
I'm not an attorney or even a paralegal but I would work for that law firm.
Definitely have to have a big rivalry with Gage Whitney.
I've wondered before why Sorkin hasn't written a legal series, considering he made the greatest legal drama ever ("You can't handle the truth!") and The Social Network is framed around two depositions. Maybe because it's been done so many times before.
The writers of this show had such a talent for character introductions. In just a handful of minutes i became convinced that Oliver babish was going to become a major recurring character in this show. Despite the fact that he only was in a small amount of episodes he became such a favorite for me
“It won’t stop recording, so that’s just what you want lyin’ around the White House Counsel’s Office. Because there’s never been a problem with that before.”
I remember I thought the “big hammer” line would be the best in the scene.
Then he said that.
Then, of course, the big hammer and dictaphone shared thatclimatic scene.
Is that a Richard Nixon/ John Dean joke?
Pardon me if am asking something self evident, i hail from the UK my american history is a little hit and miss.
Just like John Hinckley
@@jimmy2k4o Yes. It was a reference to the Nixon tapes.
@@jimmy2k4o But Hinckley did kill Reagan
@@Nonaggress no he hit him with a
ricochet , that’s why I said hit and miss.
@@jimmy2k4o No Reagan got bodied that day man wtf you talking about. All that reading of Churchill and Trevelyan got your history mixed up.
Come on fellow Americans, back me up here.
I've watched all 7 seasons on DVD so many times I can say : any of you who don't want to watch it because your not a liberal, watch it anyway, BUT watch it as a fan because if you focus on the political (D) - (R) views of our country now, you'll miss out on some VERY funny and VERY moving scenes in this series. I'm a Full on Republican and I've watched all 7 seasons 10 ? times and all back to back. sometimes all day and all night. I still laugh at the same jokes like I've never heard them before.
it's my favorite show and there will never be another one like it.
you'll learn alot of things about daily operations of government watching this show.
couldn't have a better cast of characters. some very very funny stuff in it.
if I was younger I would get an education in Politics because of this show.
Nunya Biznis I don't know man. madam secretary is a pretty close second in my mind
I'm not liberal, by any means. I loved WW when it was on the air, recorded it, use CC and run scenes back time after time because everyone talked over each other, and I didn't want to miss a word.
I disagreed with about 90% of what Bartlett's Admin. stood for, but it was a totally amazing show! I have all the seasons on DVD.
Amazing stuff. I’ve watched them all 5 times and am also listening to the West Wing Weekly Podcast.
I'm not sure where I stand politically. I MIGHT BE EVERY POSSIBLE affiliation depending on individual situations in individual locations. One reason why I used to watch this show was to learn stuff that I didn't know before I watched a particular episode.
I still own every season on DVD and use the information that was introduced during this show to compare what the world is like right now.
I'm as conservative as they come, and I still think WW was one of the best shows ever aired on television.
That's interesting! I think part of what makes this teaser so great to me is that it opens with someone we've never seen before and you're just kind of like "why are these people and why is all this stuff their talking about relevant?" and then it all comes together in one of the best moments of the series.
What truly brings all the amazing components of this show together and makes it great is Sorkins writing. I swear that man could write an ingredient list and he would find some way to make it more than it is.
Some ground beef and an egg, Ricotta, Mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, tomato paste, parsley, water and finally lasagna noodles. So much more than the ingredient list!
"Yes because we are both men of Chicago"
"What is it with people from Chicago? They can't wait to tell you they are from Chicago, but anytime you talk to them, they're living anywhere but Chicago"
Favorite line of the whole series...because it's TRUE. As a born and raised chicagoan living in phoenix I do that all the time...or at least talk about chicago postively.
@@josephligue Same! Born in the Chicago suburbs, live in Phoenix...
Well because it's really not that impressive when you tell someone IN Chicago you are from there.
Native Chicagoan, Brynn Mawr and Sheridan North side, I could see the lighthouse from my apartment, currently living in Houston. We tell everyone, well, mostly because we just want to make you feel inferior.
cos Chicago sux. been there. no reason to boast about it. but philly ..the original capitol and all its history now there's a city
You only have to watch the first scene with Jed Bartlett to know why you should watch. It may be the finest TV show ever made
ZATennisFan “I am the Lord you God...!”
One among many, many, many great scenes on this show. Brilliant.
I LOVE this opening...perfect setup, perfect timing, perfect delivery - comedy gold.
One of the best introductions to a new character ever.
The other Oliver moment I love is when he is talking with Abby about her malpractice suits...and after she propses a deal he says "you are going to swear an oath and tell the truth...becuase that you stand up and tell them to STOP!"....
writing like that stirs the soul.
Best show ever made
Up until one month ago I fully agreed. But now "Newsroom" is moving into play. But hey, they were both created by Aaron Sorkin!
"I'm easing in."
It's nice that Bartlet wants to be gentle while he bones Babish.
Guarantee that if they should bring this show back now it would be a big hit again
NBC is doing a reboot. An independent/3rd party president is elected right after Santos’s term ended. Both parties had become bitter enemies and both side has vicious candidates. A white horse was able to claim enough states that none had 270, but he captured the most.
Starts 9/2020
@@Tigerman1138 are you sure? Where did you hear this??
@@tyu3456 I'm not finding any sort of actual confirmation online, only just that Richard Schiff has pitched an idea to Aaron Sorkin, Sorkin would like a reboot to happen, Sorkin is thinking of a script. That's it. No actual talks with NBC confirmed. This much info is surprising to me because Sorkin was pretty adamant about not doing tv anymore after The Newsroom reached its final season. Oh the idea Schiff pitched is not at all what Tigerman1138 mentioned.
tyu3456 Oh I was kidding.
rcoronado83 I was just kidding.
I've watched the entire series at least 4 times and I still laugh more than almost any comedy I've ever seen.
It's really crazy how many big stars had bit parts on this show.
Two guys from Modern Family (Cam and Phil) and Clark Gregg as an FBI agent.
The main guy of NCIS (Don't know his name).
There's another guy, but I don't know his character name. He's the main Secret Service agent, and he's been in loads of stuff as similar-styled govt agents.
Main guy in NCIS: Gibbs, played by Mark Harmmond
+ISchulz Agent Ron Butterfield is played by Michael O'Neill, great character actor.
Actually guy from NCIS is Mark Harmon. Character name Leroy Jethro Gibbs. He played the Secret Service Agent assigned to Cj Craig when there was a threat on her life.
ISchulz mark Harmon.
Also John Goodmanham, Matthew Perry, John laroquette, Lilly Tomlin, and many, many, many more.
Marlee Matlin, Danica McKellar, Mary Louise Parker, Amy Adams, Evan Rachel Wood, Nick Offerman, Single Cell Paramecium.
Ok, I made the last one up.
2:04. Yeah.....stop button improvised.
+Rudy Juarez No need for a stop button when you have a Big Hammer.
I'm a diehard conservative republican (you can hate all you want) and I love this show. So funny, emotional, and well thought out. A+ for Aaron Sorkin and the cast too!
+Walter Kiefer - I don't hate you. I appreciate that you are objective in loving this show. TWW is really a show about human relationships and how people can be at their best. It just happens to use politics as the background. Also, I think the use of the labels of Republicans and Democrats diminishes individuals. I consider myself an independent. I lean towards being liberal in many areas, but, I am a fiscal conservative.
why can't everyone respond like this...
@Watersmith53 One of Aaron Sorkin's biggest stated regrets from the West Wing was not locking Emily Procter down as a series regular. Unfortunately, their slate was full at the time, so there wasn't room for anyone else, but he still wishes they'd bent the policy to keep her on.
Word!
Walter Kiefer I’m with you, and like you, 100%.
Although, watching Bartlett explain what his problem to Babish, I’m thinking,”Okay, now THAT is an impeachable crime.”
Alright, I'm sold. I'll check it out. Was already kind of curious before, but wasn't sure until now.
Ive rewatched this show at least 6 times.
@Lucifronz Haven't regretted it have you?
Oh my God, that was pure genius smashing that tape recorder.
I have to admit, I doubted this video at first. I've seen enough West Wing to know it's great, but I hadn't seen Platt's character before, so this wasn't doing anything for me until that last minute or so, and then BAM! GREAT teaser for the show, and it definitely gives a taste of the style and humor of WW. Thanks!
GREAT dialogue... Oliver's a relatively minor character across the entire series yet how good are his lines?
I LOVE how calm Leo is when Oliver smashes the device 😂😂
Excellent captioning - I was highly skeptical ANYONE could pick *one* clip that would justify it, but day-um you so did!!!! I'd forgotten it entirely, which is terrifying because I treasure the series and adore each of the three actors individually, so thank you so much for being so very right ❤❤❤
The writing of this show was amazing.
OK, thank you very much for this clip. I had forgotten about this scene, and I absolutely howled when Oliver… did the thing he did. Thank you for that - a great way to start the day is a good belly laugh!
And yes, this is one of the reasons why everyone absolutely should watch TWW.
I LOVE THIS SHOW... Bravo TV has been playing reruns for months... Season 1 to 7.. back to season 1 to 7 on and on... and I still keep watching everyone one of them in the morning.
I love that hammer/recorder moment
I believe this series is some of Aaron Sorkin’s best writing.
This is my favorite teaser for any series ever. So well done.
mine is the one about leo as the "charlie brown of missile defense"
When I first saw Babish's expression then his smashes his big hammer on the dictaphone I couldn't help but busting a gut!!
Every single time I see the scene.
I just realized after all these years that noise of the gavel on the recorder (which sounds like gunshots) would have had the Secret Service breaking down the door.
Best show ever on TV! I have watched and rewatched sooo many times.
I'm not even American and I love this show!
This was actually written to be Tribbey, but the actor who played him wasn't available, so Sorkin wrote in a few lines to explain there being a new White House Counsel.
You can tell that the gavel was supposed to be Tribbey's cricket bat.
It's in the running as my favorite scene in the entire show, period.
bartlet: "i'm easing in"
leo: "ok"
Oliver Platt was fantastic as Oliver Babbish. Just when you think he couldn't be more serious about something he'd turn around and make you laugh.
“Just making sure this isn’t on tape Mr. President”
Never has a reaction been so *smashing*
I didn't know where this was going but the ending was absolutely brilliant!
LOL - this is the kinda guy Chump needed after his latest phonecall came to light.
I just noticed that Eric Stonestreet is one of the staffers in this scene. Awesome!
God I miss this show.
geez, Plattt is a big man.
I do love the smashing of the dictaphone. I wonder how many younger Americans today would know anything about the missing tapes.
Or know about Dictaphones or know about the constitutional amendments of which he was speaking
It's about words ... this show is always about words; and how smart the writing is and the acting is and how fast smart people can back and forth with ... words .. Now that's damn sexy.
And there's never been another show like this; others have tried .. but look at these people play with words .. _I'm crying here_
This is just an absolutely beautifully told joke.
Always loved this scene with him destroying the dictaphone
Totally appropriate given recent events.
This is my favorite scene in the series, hands down. I died laughing the first time I saw it.
I LOVE this show, I miss this kind of writing, and it was worth the $200.00 I spent on the full dvd collection. I'm sorry that Studio 60 didn't make the cut, but I hope Sorkin doesn't give up on writing for television. :)
Bartlett was stunned when Oliver banged the dictaphone but Leo didn't even flinch!
Ok, im sold. Starting S1E1 tonight.
Another amazing character and actor in the West Wing...
I love this scene!
Some of the planets best writers wrote for that show. Outstanding.
I love the Presidents face when he picks up his gavel to smash the recorder
My favorite Babish moment before Binging.
hahah that made me laugh so hard when i saw it first (a few days ago, just started this show)
:D
Greatest series ever
That look at the recorder "let's not take any chances"
Gold - such a brilliant show, and this scene encapsulates the West Wing - fast paced detail and intelligent discourse, mixed with intelligent, and sometimes, slapstick, comedy.
Oliver Platt was AWESOME in this role!! GREAT SCENE-STEALER, in the company of OTHER great scene-stealers, like Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Wilford Brimley, etc.
One of my favorite scenes in all of TV.
Fun-fact:
That ending was improvised.
It was initially just to have Oliver say,”I see.” He then yells to his side to cancel his flight. When the aide asks when he wants to reschedule it he yells back,”I have no idea.”
He was then going to throw the gavel across the room.
In one take Platt destroyed a prop dictaphone and the entire production crew found it too funny and they ordered one which could break apart easily.
Made up, but a cool though.
I’ve always loved that scene
the expression on Bartlet's face is priceless
Man, besides Josh, did any character get to take a vacation?
CJ took time off to go spend with her father. Wasn't really a vacay but she was out of the office for a bit.
Becky Hobson Then she got called back.
I was feeling bad for Oliver, Sam, and Will for being on route to overdue time off before their duties put a stop to those plans.
Donna
Will was going to go on vacation after he got the dead guy elected to Congress but he had to go help Toby with the State of the Union when Same decided to run for that vacant House seat.
That’s one reason why, in real life, it’s not unusual for white house staff to last only a couple years. Obama had three press secretaries in eight years and W had four. Working 16 hour days seven days a week takes a toll on you. Almost all of Bartlett’s staff lasting the full eight years is very unrealistic.
Agree... greatest drama ever in history... and I'm an enormous fan of SFU and Sopranos, which are also brilliant. What a great time it was to be a tv fan.
Always loved this part of the show
I never get tired of watching this vid. I LOVE T.W.W.!! The humor is full of profundity.
What bill could congress possibly be working on that involves the 3rd amendment? It basically says the government can't force you to quarter troops in your home.
Otherwise, one of my favorite west wing scenes.
Late to the party, but if a new military base was to be built with a specific spot picked and would require eminent domain of private property. Or, even any law expanding the ability of the government to pull eminent domain as the other ones he lists are about trial by jury and property preservation.
0:48 - the staff's probably thinking "Here he goes again" :)
Bashes the gavel on the desk
“Ok”
Bo he smashed the recording dictaphone
Well good for you. Many do not though, sadly. I'm quite moderate and didn't always agree with these guys but what I could get behind was their sentiment, especially people like Toby and Sam and of course, the President. ALso, when I was asked to write a short essay about someone who inspires me, Jed Bartlet is who I used :)
God Bless.
When Oliver puts the recorder on the desk it's face down, flat. As they walk into the room you can see it's now on it's side, the better angle for smashing.
sports night-west wing= my fave tv shows man i love aaron sorkin
nice cut at 1:39, if I didn't check the episode again I'd never would've seen it!
I've always wondered what kind of case he thought should have been about protecting citizens from unlawful search and seizure (4th amendment) but his staff thought was about:
A) not quartering soldiers in your home against you will (3rd amendment), B) the right to an attorney in civil disputes over $20 (7th amendment),
and
C) the inability of the U.S. courts to hear cases and make decisions against a state if it is sued by a citizen who lives in another state or a person who lives in another country. (11th amendment).
Because that case sounds fascinating!!!
well obviously a national guard of one state has been posted to live in a civilians house in a second state, found the weed stash in said civilians house, and seized it and all other items of monetary value to prevent the civilian from obtaining further illicit substances. The civilian is suing both the first state and the military members for the damages, and whilst it is easily proven beyond reasonable doubt that the 3rd, 7th and 11th amendments have not been broken, Babbish believes that an argument could be made on the grounds of the fourth and believes that all energy should be spent focusing on that, where his staff focused on the other aspects.
I am not a lawyer, nor do I live in America, but I spent all of five minutes googling and so am obviously an expert and should be trusted.
I think about this scene every now and then and it still makes me laugh
"Don't you read the papers, Oliver?" "No, was it in Le Monde?" "I don't know. I don't read Le Monde." "Pity" 😅
You needn't actually sell TWW to anyone. If a person is smart enough, wants to watch a show that is intellectual, brilliant and emotional, then eventually he or she is gonna end up watching this show.
@mummyspoon . amazing! Is that offer only in store? can't see it on the website.
Double setup and pay-off!!❤
I like how he takes one look at the recorder and goes hammer time
My dad is certainly a Republican and this is probably his favorite show ever. It's just a great show?
He might like what Ben Shapiro said. People expect the people in government to be like the west wing but in reality they’re more like the cast of Veep.
still one of my favorite scenes!
This and another scene were the reason I watched the show. So thanks.
I'm a conservative but this was an awesome show. Occasionally, as a Republican, the topic and the shows liberal lean would cause me discomfort but this was an awesome show!
I'm curious. What liberal leanings do you find uncomfortable? The scene where Donna and Josh discuss the budget surplus? Charlie's tax rebate? The Chinese Christian refugees? Bailing out the CEO of a bankrupt tech company? The Nonproliferation Treaty? The Progressive Tax System? Sam's view on Education?
@@vdinh143 my guess would be the various views on abortion, especially during the electoral campaigns in the 6th and 7th seasons.
My main one was when CJ takes about mandatory minimum prison sentencing.
She said crack gets you more time than power coke even if weights are equal.
Crack is predominantly used by black people while powder is mostly white people.
She said this disparity is racist and unfair….black people drug gets you more time than white people drug even if they’re equal weights.
However Crystal meth is predominantly used by white people and has the same mandatory minimum as Crack.
Also the laws around crack being so harsh is actually because black citizens protested their local black council to crack down on in (no pun intended) because they could see they and they families were the victims of it.
I love TWW while being a conservative, this scene stands out because it’s the only time I recall that a left wing argument was challenged by somebody in the case like ainsley would defend the republican side at moments like this.
Or when CJ confronted Nancy mcnally about selling guns to qumar.
This argument is false and it went uncorrected or even questioned.
I’d pay top dollar to know what issue they were dealing with involving the quartering of soldiers (3rd amendment) that wasn’t somehow tied to ancient rulings
Ooh, Eric Stonestreet. I love seeing actors in bit roles before they got their big break. Fyi, I loathe Modern Family but from the fairly small sample of that show that I have seen, Stonestreet, Ed O'Neil and the kid who played Manny were its strengths.
@Reqrezentin if your talking about the guy that came in with the President, than yah, Leo McGerry is the White House Chief of Staff. If you are talking about Oliver, then no, he is the White House Counsel - the President's lawyer.
After the debacle that was Studio 60, a lot of people complained that Aaron Sorkin couldn't write comedy. I think The West Wing often had moments that show just how well he can -- and this scene is one of them.
@kacc53 Like the character President Bartlett, I guess we love people smart people who disagree with us.
