What Did You Learn in School Today? - Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton

- Pete Seeger sings Tom Paxton's song live on the "Tonight In Person" Show (1964).
Here's some of the "best" lyrics:
I learned that Washington never told a lie.
I learned that soldiers seldom die.
I learned that everybody's free.
And that's what the teacher said to me.
That's what I learned in school today.
That's what I learned in school.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
Written 50 years ago and it's every bit as relevant today. The more things "change" the more they stay the same.
Things never change. So many hints in our modern society but still people have yet to realize the truth.
+Fat Man Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.
I learned how to make th "Impossible nail-through-wood trick"
Me too
Haha did you You Tube the song after watching it like I just did😂😂

須田みずほ you mean, impossibru?
須田みずほ im still thinking he boil water for 2 days
須田みずほ yup
hahaha lol.. exactly...
apparently a lot of people didn't get the sarcasm of the song...
+chipsotopher Admittedly I didn't when I first heard it. I remember thinking what a square this singer was (in my defense, I was young!) It could almost be a non-ironic song from the 1950s.
Jacob Zondag if you are a worker, then you already are both!!!
@@wrmty56413 I was young too, about six years old. I didn't notice sarcasm, I was just envious he could remember all that junk from a day in school. My mother asked me what I learned and would sing part of that song. I couldn't remember anything I learned. I just wanted to get my mind off school and go out and PLAY! Screw school there's a pond out there to skip rocks on, kids to play with, a creek to walk on like Daniel Boone does that big one on TV, a doll house to play with, LIFE to enjoy before going back to that hell called school tomorrow (or Monday if it's a weekend).
I love that look at the end that appears to say, "I *really* hope you know what you're clapping for."
I taught 10 year old kids in UK in the 1960s/70s. I taught them to question everything, accept nothing as true, even what I was telling them. It made teaching difficult at times but very rewarding to see young minds developing. I can honestly say the kids had a very happy year with me as their teacher, so free. I loved it.
Watching this, in the U.S., on Nov. 7, 2024. Hits like a sledgehammer.
If it didn't hit just as hard on Nov. 7, 2020, then you aren't listening.
@ …sure… both parties are warmongers. Excellent point.
But maybe Google Pete Seeger to see what animated his songs before you sing along.
@@mrwiOnly 1 party wants to end these pointless wars, and it's no longer the Democrats. Certainly used to be, no longer. Some uniparty neo-cons.
I wish I could have met Pete Seeger. I want to give him a hug
He passed away many years ago :(
There are two types of people: those who understand satire, and those who don't.
Wrong! There are really only two type of personalities:
Those who over-read people from single things they said or wrote without knowing the person.
And those who don't.
More like there are enough people that legitimately believe this stuff that it's impossible to distinguish.
There are only two kinds of people: Those who believe you can categorize everything into two binary boxes, and those who are worth talking to.
I am watching this right now with my 6 and 7 year old daughters and carefully explaining each verse. Teach your children well. Peace.
How the've become 9 years later?
@@MegaSockenschuss My youngest chose this for a farewell video her class did last year (I'm not sure how her teacher felt about it). They're turning out great - their eyes are open to the current state of the world - it's ironic that liberals have now become the subject of Pete's scorn in this song - brainwashing kids. ☮
@@Ducksoup67 Sounds like you were/are a good role model and you've done a very good job in raising your kids. :)
Things like your little story here give me a little hope, we got some humans and not just drones around in the future.
I watched this video 8 years ago...I still watch it every month. Bless you Pete
Love this song. It's been stuck in my head all day. That's what i learned in school...
We need more songs like this, thanks Chomsky!
Jason ranti :*)
I looked up this song as I actualy learned it in primary school in the early seventies in the Netherlands!
Still as actual now as the day it was written 50 years ago.
Some things never change.
That is so great.
I think the intended satire went over the heads of quite a few of the commenters.
Masterpiece
Pete you were just not an Ambassador of truth and goodness - you talked it, walked it, and felt it - just look at his expression at the end of this song - it says it all 1:42 - specifically that he wishes things were not as they are.
Danish entertainer Eddie Skoller (born in St. Louis, Mo) wrote new lyrics to the song and released it in 1980. The lyrics makes fun of sterotypes from all around the world including the swedes, english and americans. I heard it first time at the age of ten and still remember the lyrics. He also did the different accents in perfect comedy style.
They are actually using this as a PSA for learning on Hulu.
ddabney67 right?! I had to look it up to make sure I remembered it correctly; I was all “wait, This song was satirical, right? What’s this doing in an ad for friggin HULU!?”
Great song
Why would anyone thumbs down this?!
Two words: "baa baa"
Rest in peace Pete
still relevant today
RIP Pete.
i leaned everything but forget all before exam day
I heard a fiddle cover of this song on the radio in 2008.
CööL! Very catchy!
"Do you know what I learned at MIT, Mister?" He nodded. "Particle physics, if I am correct."
"No," she said. She laughed, a mocking laugh. "I learned that a tape recorder could graduate MIT with honors," she pushed the magnifying glass aside. "I learned to vomit up whatever answer was handed to me in text books and lectures. That was what they wanted from every student. Not anything else. For my second year I answered every question with what was stated in the lectures or the textbook verbatim, and received top grades."
She looked back down. "Imagine my disappointment to discover that the most prestigious scientific universities on earth were little more than intellectual vomitoriums." -excerpt
R.I.P. Pete.
bombastico..
It was a powerful song then. It resonates even more in this day and age.
POWER TO THE TRUCKERS IN CANADA.
Yea the publicly communist/socialist singer known for being a proud leftist would have lots in common with the truckers
Wh- do you think this is sung unironically?
I was fought that as a kid 55 years ago
Wow.
What children are learning today
What children are learning today
It's out of my mind
What children are learning today
What children are learning today
I heard this playing over a another video and thought it was real. I thought what a great piece of propaganda. So I had to look it up. Once I seen it was Seeger, I knew it had to be satire.

It's a greater injustice to be put in prison for life than to be killed....
Guys, the song is satirical. He is criticizing the indoctrination of the youth in the state education system. My god, it's satire.
the lyrics is kinda sad tho
Kids learn a lot in school today, nothing listed in the song. The pendulum has swing my friends, but lies are lies.
You cannot be serious.......
that guy smile at 0:41 when he said i know police men are not my friends is priceless lol
Government is always wrong.
@sansdeity420
sarcasm. yes. It's good to see that understanding existed back then.
I learned math the non-common core way!
only if you are UNDER a certain age, means any hope for the future.
Depressed at how relevant this song still is
Even more depressed now...
@George3901505 To be honest that's the idea of the song, it mocks the way children can be taught lies. It's why this song is so good. It makes me sad to think that the child doesn't really understand the world.
@kaseyjones777 I didnt know it was meant to be sarcastic, sorry. And i learn about the structure of lanthanides actually... dont stereotype british schools...
And just look at what is going on in the world today.
This song is sarcastic. Seriously.
If you can't tell, just check out when this guy talks in "Buy your son a gun". I wish we had more like him around today.
"i learn that police men are my friends in 2020-2021 police men beating up people" btw im here from 2020-2021
I learn that policemen are my friends, even as they tear gas me again and again.
@@theredshirts7245 that is correct
“I learn that our leaders are always right and never wrong” when trump is the leader LETS START S DAMN RIOT
@duckmanham He never actually admitted it. There was a fail translation. We wanted him to take the fall for it.
Thanks. Great post.
Modest suggestion: Make clear words and music are by Tom Paxton, but he doesn't perform in this clip.
no sarcasm. Lets go.....INTERNET FIGHT
This is verbal irony, not sarcasm.
damn
@megaton666 true
What did you learn watching the news today?
I learned Obama's a very great man,
He freed a soldier from Afghanistan,
I learned the Constitution's old,
And we don't need Congress to do something bold,
And that's what I learned on the news today,
That's what I learned on the news.
That's what the news doesn't tell you today
That's what the news doesn't tell you today
Mines not sarcastic by the way
thomas muckler I don't think you get it.
That puppies are more news-worthy than our government illegally buying and shipping drugs. Or more news-worthy than the thousand of people each year who get killed or arrested by police for no reason.
OHRWURM!!!!
@LittleLadySweet passt ja zum lied
@Panjojo What is the point of the song?
'Muricaaaaaaaaaaa don't get no sarcasm, Tommy boy1
@liphttam I know but it just kills me that some people take this seriously..
this would be a great song for a troll video
I learned that soldiers seldom die... Unless they're getting shot at.
I just realized that it's a sarcasm
This song pretty much sums up everything that's wrong with America
@cassidy1478 what?

Has Afghanistan moved then ? Last time I looked it was in Asia.............and what's the betting ,cassidy1478,you're just another key board warrior ?

Who is here because of the spectrum ad
yeah, he's going to rip the middle east to "peaces" LOL
wow that was corny haha, but very true. obomba 2008 - 3008! peace bombs for everyone!
Are people clapping because they understand its satire critiquing propoganda, or because they believe the propaganda?
kto z demotów??
I don't know much on the history of this, but is it purposely pointing out how children are brain-washed or is it brain-washing children?
very sarcastic huh...
Im not sure if he means it or its just sarcasm. imo judging from year 64 he means it and maybe even believe it. baa baa
+KennethMorca It's sarcasm.
+KennethMorca It's satire. Pete Seeger was actually a life long communist.
jimmy page Because that's the point of democracy. Expressing his opinion through this song is the only power he has, so he use it.
jimmy page Seeger loved the nation itself, and it's people. Just not the US government, the economic system, or its excesses and effects. He wanted to help build an even better and more beautiful version of his country. Whether you agree with his Marxist views or not is beside the point, but he didn't hate the US. Quite the contrary.
Grant Neal Then why was he bitching about the fucking place for almost 80 years? I dont believe a word yo have to say
Guess what I saw on RUclips today
It's a joke.
OFC he is sarcastic lol anybody with a working brain could tell with closed eyes
I learned in School not to listen to the educated fools on The East Dulwich Forum who, collectively, appear to have no common srnse or life experience ! lol
"sense"
I hope you will have your chance in Vietnam after this song, and you will learn it there, that war is "not so good"
Although this song was written as many pointed out in a satirical manner,
Many of those values or beliefs would be wonderfully served if instilled in our youths belief system - instead of the trend of hating our country, hating all forms of government (not that I love everything the government does or has done) the hate demonstrated towards our law enforcement, the disgust shown to our men & woman of our military. And the recent uprising to topple our founding fathers such as George Washington & Thomas Jefferson- their is an underlying epidemic in this country to push basic HATRED of ones self,
Deny yourself & who you are,
If your American,
Can’t say your proud,
That wrong,
If your white,
Your a racist bigot,
Even if your best buddy is a black guy,
If your married to another race -
Both of you are racist.
If your a man,
You must secretly desire to be a woman,
If a woman,
To be equal you must try to be a man.
All designed to make someone hate who they are, where they come from, who their parents & grandparents are or were.
So if your white, american & from the south, and your a man.
You are considered old fashioned bigot.
I don’t like brain washing- but as a country with the liberals that the 60s generated - we’ve gone to a complete different extreme!
As Patriotic Americans we have to say enough is enough &
It’s ok to be loud & proud &
Not ashamed of what God has blessed you with.
So you're telling me people should worship a country that has killed over 60 million people in as many years? America is an empire more brutal than even Britain or France. It is not merely imperialism but its deadly twin: capitalism.
Aww, aren't you the cutest oppressed snowflake
