The part of the documentary that was so striking, was when the counsel for the family discovered that the hospital was billing for CRPS diagnosis codes, when they were saying the entire time her mom was coaching her and that it was Munchausen by proxy. That’s I think when the hospital was screwed

The mother and this girl 👶 arrived with things clear and the real diagnosis, and the arrogance of someone from the management, wanted to do something disgusting. They knew that mistreating the girl was going to lower her level of consciousness. And accusing MBProxy's mother is a disgrace.😢 F**c. The fact that they would ask this child that they essentially kidnapped to nominate one of her nurses for a Daisy Award is f***ing appalling
I worked at 500 bed pediatric hospital and usually the parents are asked about a DAISY Award… I wouldn’t speak for all the staff, I’m sure most are good. But it is a nice distraction to nominate one of your nurses for a DAISY award and it helps you focus more on the positives of your hospital stay instead of the negative.

@@BoringTroublemaker I agree it does. Ans the fact that the nurse that got it was because she was attentive to basic human needs is foul. Usually, it’s, my nurse made me feel as at home as she possibly could, always in time with the meds, extremely well communicator with treatments and progress etc. NOT, I got to use the bathroom when I needed to. That’s beyond f**ked up!!!

I agree, they look bad. Some of the jury questions lead me to believe they are deeply disturbed by the hospital. They are digging. It’s about how they treated her like she and her mother were crazy and psychologically disturbed.
The amount of manipulation she had to endure at 9 years old is appalling. I am a chronic pain person and i completely understand the flares and the ebs and flows. It almost broke me to lose my leg functions and go in a wheelchair at 50. Maya, you are incredible. I am so sorry you had to get strong this way.
As a person who has been diagnosed with CRPS/RSD, I completely relate to Maya’s story. When there’s a flare up, the symptoms change all the time and the pain fluctuates between just tolerable to horrific. This condition can affect the entire body - sensitivity to touch and other senses - it definitely affects the your mood - leads to irritability and depression. I too, was in a wheel-chair for roughly 3.5 months until the rigidity lessened and my strength increased. I can’t imagine being 9 yrs old and going thru this essentially alone st the hospital. PS- the suggestion of breaking her bones in her feet and resetting them is ridiculous! It’s a nerve disorder which affects the nerves and muscles not bones unless it’s years of contorted limbs. My feet turned inwards and down along with swelling and color changes - both alabaster white to purple or each would be a different color.
I’m so sorry you suffer from this. I suffer from chronic pain but not to this extent. Have you tried ketamine? Just curious.

I'm new to this case but I suffer from chronic pain doctors misdiagnose me and just constantly say it's mental or that I'm too complicated and pass me off. I've had brain surgery, spine surgery I've been diagnosed with everything from fibromyalgia, ehlers-danlos syndrome and postural tachycardia syndrome just to name a few. If she suffering from something mental? Is this like a Gypsy Rose thing
@@MOONSLIFE36 Look up symptoms of CRPS. You might find that you have lots of similarities . There is not one specific designated test to ascertain the diagnosis that’s why many physicians are skeptical and uneducated. It is a combination of many symptoms. If you live in IL contact Rush Hospital or Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
Mayo fascial Release (MFR) was and is still extremely helpful to me. I’ve been getting txs for 13 years.

I have a lot of respect for Maya…specifically at her young age. The way she responds to the continuous gaslighting by the defence is truly admirable. She is absolutely sincere and the truth will always trump the lies in the end. I really hope that she wins this case.

I feel like the defense is putting chronic illness, especially childhood chronic illness, on trial.
as someone who has chronic pain from multiple chronic illnesses that were misunderstood and denied in childhood and even into my late 20s, I am so proud of Maya for standing up for herself and children with chronic illness against all those who say it's "all in your head."

My daughter was accused of making up her symptoms for years. She ended up having to leave school at 11 yo and hasn’t ever been back. She was eventually diagnosed with heart problems among other disorders that are now not responding to most medical intervention and she is under palliative care. . Suffice to say we are reporting the incompetent drs to the powers that be. I too was accused of enabling her too. Thank goodness my dr colleagues believed my daughter and myself. This breaks my heart watching this. Maya you answered these questions eloquently and being very articulate. Well done.

I'm 60. I have CRPC, and have battled it for over 18 years. I had spent 10 years in a wheelchair, I fought, did every treatment you did. All! Today I take my meds 440 am, daily and then work fulltime. CRPS is up down all day. They found the perfect medicine and I'm in 0 pain, not drugged, and nerves are shut down, as long as I take meds. Dr. D. Shulman specializes in it. I broke my foot, leading to CRPS. Known as RSD also. I was electrocuting myself, freezing, overheated, bad swelling, atrophy. Every symptom. Treatments are temp. I know my body and listen to it. Best wishes to listen, do what your body needs.
Maya I’m so proud of you and standing up for your self. You have so many moms here that love you and know that your momma is so very proud of how strong you were. Now as a nurse for over 34 years I was appalled at the treatment you and your family received from this cooperation. That is all you were to them was an acuity number, a dollar sign. Well now they are a dollar sigh to you and to the millions of chronic pain patients across the world. The world Maya. I pray they close their doors to never hurt another family. Never ever let anyone tell you what your pain level is. Pain is and has always has been subjective. Be an advocate for children. As a 12 year survivor, of a dog mauling resulting in being diagnosed with CRPS, we only were introduced to ketamine treatments as an alternative to fentanyl patches and 30 pain pills a day. The ketamine trial was for the military through the medical trials .gov website. For the first time since six weeks after a large dog mangled my ulnar nerve biting through the finger bones of my dominant hand, amongst a dozen other crushing puncture wounds, the medication immediately allowed my to lift my formerly immobilized atrophied hand to shoulder.
The Budapest pain scale lists CRPS as the worst pain a human can experience and it is forever to one degree or another but never a minute without pain.
The average lifespan of a person diagnosed with this deteriorating nerve dysfunction is seven years. Most choose to un-alive themselves as most medical professionals ignore or downplay the severity of a person battling against their own body constantly. Wants no longer matter and needs like brushing hair or teeth, or even taking a bath are weighed on risk of a flare vs benefit.
Maya is a role model and so deeply sorry for the torture and losses she and her family have had to endure.
There are many highly trained doctors that specialize in outpatient ketamine ,one treat,ears and it is also highly effective for the most severe depression, suicidal ideation, etc. This medication is not an overdose risk, is used constantly in surgeries for pets and humans and far safer and superior to opiates.
For those struggling with severe pain that encroaches completely on daily life, it is a possible idea that should be discussed with a trained anesthesiologist at a pain specialty clinic.
Hot take- never ever go to the emergency room because of CRPS pain. The side eye and accusations of drug seeking or malingering is soul crushing. The war against pain medications for those who truly suffer with documented, tested and treated with every other step that does not involve controlled medications is the critical first step.
Bless Maya and may her past be overshadowed by how fabulous her future will be.🧡 November is CRPS awareness month. If your body is sending sigmas that don’t add up to your activities and lifestyle, please nurture yourself & listen to what it’s saying. Early treatment, as in within 6 weeks with stellate ganglion blocks and physical therapy- never ice therapy, may cut off the domino effect of the nerve dysfunction spread.

I was married to someone with this condition, and the pain is exactly how she says. One HOUR u can be fine, the next HOUR u can be devastated. Nothing helps it.
I have CRPS and a supportive husband. I wanted to thank you for being so supportive and speaking up for your spouse. This condition is difficult on not only the patient, but the families as well. It affects my sons because I can't run and play with them as much as they want. My 8yr old is high-needs autistic and mostly nonverbal. Emotionally he's a toddler who likes to curl up on my lap and give me super-tight hugs (they can be painful). He and I are both improving and I hope that your wife has a treatment plan that works. The hospital did not keep her. It was ordered by the court. People have no idea what your talking about. There is a case in Denver right now where a children's hospital is being sued for not reporting their concerns about a parent and the child died. Any concerns have to be reported. IT'S THE LAW

I don't have CRPS, but I do have fibromyalgia. A lot of what she's saying in terms of the flare ups are so spot on. Even with fibromyalgia, you can be in constant pain (or even excruciating pain) without having a *flare up.* I think when we refer to a flare up, we mean "the pain is a lot worse than it normally is," not "oh I have pain now but when I'm not in a flare up, I have no pain or symptoms," and I really think people need to take that into consideration when thinking about people with chronic pain.
Also, I don't speak for everyone with a chronic illness obviously, but for me personally (and it seems like for Maya as well), we try to push and challenge ourselves until we can't go anymore. We *want* to have the same abilities as everyone else. We *want* to do as much as people without chronic illnesses. We *want* to live normal lives. What are we supposed to do, lay in bed for every little ache we have just to prove that we are in pain? HELL NO! It seems like Maya found a nice balance where she could do things she wanted to do until she had a flare up. That's what people like us *HAVE* to do.

I have CRPS and a miriad of other health problems. You are correct about the base pain, it's *always* there. I'm an extremely independent person and I *hate* needing so much help. My pain is mostly in my hands and some days I can't brush own hair. My husband has been super-helpful in assisting me and backing up that this pain is real. My parents were worried I was faking, but he confirmed my nearly constant agony. My grandmother has fibromyalgia and we've bonded over the similar symptoms, difficulty in getting medical help, and having people question whether or not your pain is real. My daughter has an auto immune disease and the sx can vary from day to day just as Maya, questioning her integrity doesn’t change that she can have good and bad days. It’s sad that her integrity is being questioned by a guy who doesn’t have the proper knowledge and education about her disease.

Maya handled this cross examination with such dignity. Each time the attorney tries to quietly undermine her, she comes back with truthful frank descriptions. Good on her for standing her ground. (And what the heck does her giving a nurse a Daisy Award have to do with it….this evidence does not prove they treated Maya respectfully or effectively. I like that she mentions that her praise was really what standard treatment should be!) After watching more, Maya displays great patience.

I agree with you. The attorney was trying to insinuate that because she liked some nurses and spoke well of them in her care journal, that that means she received the standard of care. What he fails to realize is she was 10 - and repeatedly said she was hopeful that if she praised someone, they would be her advocate. And that makes my heart hurt. This child wanted so badly to go home, she was looking for ONE person to be in her corner. And that’s where JH failed. Nobody put her first.

One never knows how one will react or think when put in a corner with no way out for Maya or her parents. Abyssal treatment, and non-treatment, of Maya. Her mom only wanted her daughter to get the help she needed.
I think he's trying to discredit her illness/ insinuate that she did these things because her mom wasn't there but it's the opposite to me. To me, it shows she is a hard worker and determined to do her best. Thus, if she could have in the hospital, she would have.

Right. They are trying to frame it like they are the reason she is doing well today. Maya is a strong young woman, she accomplished what she has because SHE worked for it. The audacity of this hospital to traumatize this family and then say "See? Shes doing better because of what we did." Wild.
The lawyer for the hospital is asking 'was this nurse nice to you' etc. What on earth is the purpose of this type of questions. I bet he would love his children to be treated in hospital just like Maya!!
I'm not really tactical BUT I would guess he was asking base questions on how she actually really like the staff, how nice they were and possibly re-directed the attention from the suit and just target her "recollection" so it would seem flimsy, influenced. I don't see how since she was literally kept under surveillance, has no privacy, and is not allowed to even discuss her care WITH her parents on the phone? She was 9!!! Like this blows my mind how they could be this heartless. This entire hospital is negligent, and I'll never step foot in one voluntarily.

Unfortunately, the attorney’s for the defense have to build their case, and prove she was “lying”, or “exaggerating” her illness. They can’t side with her, even if personally they believe her. They have a job to do.
This was so hard to watch. What an incredible young woman Maya is, sitting there and speaking so eloquently about everything she's been through. Jack looks so proud - as he should! My heart hurts for this family. Beata did everything right as a mother where her child's medical problems were concerned.
I hope Cathi Bedy and everyone else involved in keeping Maya away from her family live the rest of their days out the way that they deserve. They all have Beata Kowalski's blood on their hands.
Every single person complicit in the legal kidnapping of Maya Kowalski has Beata's blood on their hands. I will never forget what this family has gone through. I randomly put the documentary on a few months ago at bedtime and I ended up not being able to sleep because I was so distraught, especially as a mother.
Her mother did everything she could to help her daughter get relief and the only way she could see to get her away from the people that were making her suffer was to take herself out of the equation.
Some people call it selfish, but I put myself in Beata's shoes and I really feel like she just felt there was no other way to end this nightmare for her daughter.
If this hospital wins this case, I lose all faith in the justice system.
@@little.heathen as a mother, the documentary was horrifying. A few years ago, I took my daughter into the ER with an issue that, having a family member who worked for CPS, made me worried that they would assume the worst. I can't help but think that something like this could have easily happened to us too, had the doctors been different or the hospital been different or we had been somewhere else. They DID try to insinuate that we were the problem... but in the end, it was proven that her condition was due to something else entirely.
Beata was desperate to get her daughter out of an abusive hospital and she felt like they would prolong it so long as she was in the picture because they believed she was the problem. I think she truly felt hopeless and felt like this was the only way to save Maya.

I think that Beata with her forthrightness antagonised the staff . She was ordering them to give doses which are not allowed.
Every single person who’s disgusted by the actions of the hospital/dcf/social workers/etc. there is one thing we can all do to try to prevent this from happening again; do not vote for anyone who will expand government authority into your family’s home, your medical decisions, & especially into your children’s lives. We have to stop looking to ‘authority’ to solve community problems & get back to people dealing with problems in their neighborhoods & communities.

I agree there was overreach here but there needs to be these systems, (though they need massive overhauling). We are all just as outraged when children suffer or die because no one stepped in enough. If kids are not removed or when kids are returned to abusers or didn't situation didn't rise to a level where a child could be removed... we are outraged then too. We say that the system doesn't do enough to protect kids. It can be very difficult to predict what will happen. The reason Maya was removed from parental care is that this huge powerful hospital had so much influence on the system. It happens way more than we hear about. 😢

After my hip replacement I waited 2 hours til the nurses would come help me to the bathroom, and on MULTIPLE occasions, healthcare these days is 💩 all they do is tell you you're depressed or have anxiety & call you a drug seeker if you have valid pain! I hope this brings a federal law on the books because something NEEDS to change! In addition, never put your child in a pain "rehab" program and never leave a loved one alone in the hospital for days! Trust me!
🙌 I have medical trauma from medical neglect/malpractice, I have Cystic Fibrosis with rare mutations and a long list of chronic illnesses with chronic pain. I won’t see anyone in the healthcare field without at least one other person with me constantly!

I don't have CRPS but I have chronic pain on my wrists and feet due to neuropathy everyday and it kills me... having my mum with me at age 10 helped me so much. Even today at 30 she's still there to help me and even a simple gesture makes me better... i can't imagine this poor kids pain kills me knowing they don't have their mum to hugv of get comfort from their mum. 😢
Some of these comments are crazy. The struggle of an autoimmune disease is a constant battle. I was extremely sick as a kid and I have gotten better. I am able to workout and go on hikes. But every day is a little different. Fibromyalgia was seen as not a real disease for YEARS. And I was diagnosed at 11 when I couldn’t complete a mile in my gym classes. Now I can but some days the pain is so unbearable I can’t get out of bed.

I was diagnosed in 2017 with CRPS. No one can even begin to understand the mental anguish, and the pain. We need more awareness to this debilitating disease. I belong to a great support group online called “The Purple Bucket”. I recommend a support group for anyone suffering from CRPS. To know there are others who went through the same experiences helped me so much. I wish you the best, God Bless 🙏🏻

Not for any reason...she had a very difficult job that few doctors wanted to serve the public to do. She saved thousands of children from further suffering and death.
That social worker too. And some of those drs that said the horrible things they did when they found out her mother killed herself. That woman and her sidekick the social worker have not only done this to her but they did it to many many other mothers and fathers, one was an American idol singer and had had her children taken away. One was a newborn and the same people were involved.
@@foxibot You have no idea what the real facts are. Chapter 39 in Florida prevents the disclosure of the details of what the neglect or abuse was that the parents committed. The law makes it confidential. The parents can get on social media and spin their fantasy while no lawyer or DCF person associated with the case can speak the truth because THEY are bound by confidentiality.

That's what remittiturs are for...verdicts have to bear some relationship to the allegations.
by putting themselves through this, they may also set a very important precedent against the brutal "hospitals" and help others. We don't yet have a legal precedent to crush them bc people always take settlements. this family is heroic and WHEN they win- i really think they will help other people

This was far from the average "amputation of the wrong limb" or "administration of the wrong drug." A runaway verdict, if it survives appeal, will not impact the way hospitals provide care and run their business because this is not a common set of facts.

I feel this testimony from Maya reflects that her mother wasn’t making her child sick in any way whatsoever. How,the heck did this hospital come to that conclusion looking at her medical records? The MP syndrome has absolutely no evidence of something like that. This case makes me so angry. When you look at cases where MP syndrome is happening it looks nothing like this. Why this hospital didn’t settle is beyond belief.
Honestly, the initial diagnosis wasn't unreasonable.. but then I think they changed their diagnosis, and at that point they should have released her back to her family.
Mbyproxy is dangerous and Dr's should be wary of mothers who take their children to many different providers and are belligerent and forceful.
The hospital made mistakes, for sure, but I don't blame them for initial assessment
@@melanieb2132they had documented physician diagnosis so no, it wasn’t in her head. If it were just the mother, maybe. But she had seen 2 specialists with a diagnosis 😮 And initial thoughts or no, 3 months is insane to carry that on.
It's so hard to explain chronic pain to others that don't understand it/ haven't lived it. When you've had terrible pain day in and day out for months or years on end, you're going to report it at the doctor's appointment, even if you're having a relatively pain-free day. Years later, it would be impossible to recall what you were feeling on a particular day many years ago. But, that's what she's having to defend herself against.
Also, CRPS isn't that obscure. Someone at JH would have certainly been aware of it's existence and that ketamine is often very effective in its treatment.
A problematic social worker and know-it-all doctors ruined this girls life. There is still so much to be learned about the human body. No one knows it all. Listen to patients.
*Just an FYI for the people that are 💩 on the "3rd world doctor" (their words, not mine) from Mexico. K is also now being used in the US to treat opioid tolerance, depression and other pain hypersensitivity syndromes like fibromyalgia.*
Like any short term treatment you need to be determined to put the work in to overcome your pain/addiction and have people around you that can motivate you. Big shame her family didn't seem to do anything other than give her more drugs at that age.
@@pieface8032 They tried lots of things! You clearly don't know anything about this condition and didn't listen to her testimony. I have CRPS and the first step is *pain control!* There's also inflammation, muscle weakness and spasms, they require medication. Without it, exteme pain can give you a stroke. It's given me hypertension. Not all drugs are bad, something tells me you get antibiotics when you get an infection. Ketamine treatments are the most effective (and expensive) and give much longer lasting results so they don't need to constantly give her things like opiods. It's beyond frustrating to see comments like this. You watch the video for ten minutes and then give your expert opinion. It's harmful to those of us living with this condition.
I have Autoimmune problems, lots of pain. It's very difficult to get through the days. Disagree with the verdict!

It’s almost like if this lawyer keeps repeating “what did you like about this nurse”? She finally say oh yea I liked all these nurses. She definitely did what a kid would do if she wants to get out of there. I would name all the nurses if I thought I could leave the hospital.

Chronic pain syndrome. Fibromyalgia. Myofacial Pain Syndrome. Chemical sensitivity which includeds air fragrance, trying to go into a Mall can cause anxiety knowing the amount of perfume and the smells of the clothes as well as what people have used themselves, better to not go. Not going anywhere , cleaning chemicals, dry cleaners, gasoline, fumes from cars, food sensitive, the body feels itis getting attacked and can cause extreme pain and exhaustion.

Learned not to allow hospitals to take pictures of your kids, nominating nurse awards, journals because they will use it in court.
You can't really deny them doing so if they suspect abuse. They have to.

It took me over 2 years and losing quality of life AND as a adult bringing in my family to finally get diagnosed and lsitened to. The medical field all act like your crazy and so does mental health. I couldn't turn my neck nobody even touched me at any appointment. The movement neurologist diagnosed me before she even sat down. I was for a time prescribed ketamine troche which did help with pain. I stopped it a few years ago but have been looking into ketamine infusions before thinking of deep brain surgery. Intractable pain is horrific at times. And I have constant tremors. Alternative medication can help pain like this intractable. We just need a cure for dystonia. I have cervical and oromandibular dystonia. I really felt for this familly and what that mother was going through trying to help her child. I went through hell and losing quality of life. It's real pain.

All my sympathies lay with that young girl , as a child in hospital for nearly 9 months all I can say as a grown ass adult it’s a social work degree and 30 years of experience- there is an awful lot of abuse going on in the name of medicine ! I still experience excessive trauma to the point where I’ve been sick and walked out of hospitals!

My mom was on ortho ward with broek. Hip. THe toilets were designed such that the shoeer tray was in front of the door. My mom couldn't get her wheeler over the hump and constantly had to ask for help. When she didnt get help she tried herself and fell. The lady next door had both her shins explode into shatters and metal pins in her leg she could not get the wheelchair over the hump and was walking on her shattered legs to get to the toilet cos they kept leaving her there to piss herself ... hospitals are terrible places I wouldnt want to be there if I was well let alone sick.
They do that all the time, you push the button and say I need help to the restroom and they say they'll be there in a minute and 15 minutes later you're still waiting! I've literally peed on myself waiting because it hurt so bad!
I've *tons* of experience as a patient and while more positive than negative, there are *plenty* of nasty, mean, and bitter hospital staff. My gran was a nurse and so is my mother in law. I've heard stories from both of them about doctors and nurses alike torturing patients because they disliked the patient or their family. Medical staff aren't any less likely to be shitty employees than anyone else.

There’s a lot of politics and bureaucracy in the medical field. I’ve been in it for 15 years. Also, remember who the doctor of pharmacy is because it won’t be you. Trust the pharmacists in the hospital because 90% of scripts are changed by the pharmacist in a hospital. Our medical system is backwards.

WOW WOW WOW. Im so sorry for what you have and are going through. This may sound strange to some but it lifts me up that you are telling the world your story. As a sufferer of CRPS, i know the looks of ' is she really just playing the game for sympathey'. I had small op on middle toe that triggerd CRPS. Ive had children and i can say that its like labour pains but the pain does not go away. If you dont get the physio going straight away then limbs begin to stiffen and never recover. Man medical proffesionals are still still dont understand the condition. Mine traveled to mid calf. No longer able to walk or concentrate. It has lead to my right leg amputaion to the knee. A risk the CRPS would mirror or continue up my leg. My knee still has phantam pains but those are no comparison to the pain i had befor. My mes were increased in early days to such an extent that i chose to come off them. It didnt do anything for the pain and i was a zombie in another world. i have pain in my jooints and have days in bed. But i have a loving family who understand and have seen what this condition can do to a healthey body. You are so very brave Maya. Ive seen other posts too and the outcome of your trial. At last someone listend to you. This is a real conditon. Everyone.... please read the info gained from researching those who have gone through and still going through this Pain. I reside in FL (Brandon area) and there are three John Hopkins Children Out Patient facilities, and everytime I drive by one of the locations, it makes me cringe because of this case and what this poor girl went through. This hospital is really gonna hurt for business after this trial - it’s gonna not going to hurt their reputation too, but kill them financially due to lack of business and this $250M lawsuit.
I admire her so much I was taken away from my parents for a little over a month due to depression anxiety due to a SA that happened at school in 7th grade. I was in a mental hospital but couldn’t speak with them until I reached a color on the level block of what I got to do. I was locked in a room the first night in a round observation room with one little window, I was basically in a jail cell the medicine they gave me to calm me down. I was allergic to it. It turned out to be Ativan, and it made my jaw completely lock up and start to twist and I was bleeding out of my mouth and banging on the door begging for them to help. They finally came about five minutes later and I was bleeding out of my mouth. I remember them giving me a shot in my hip immediately I was traumatized and then I was also sexually assaulted while I was there I was groped by the young 23 year old PE teacher they had they had me on so many medication‘s I didn’t know what day it was or hardly what my name was to this day. J locked us. Literally deadbolt locked us in our rooms at night and my roommate was in there for stabbing her boyfriend in the arm I was petrified I wish that I had pressed charges on them. It has affected me to this day, being ripped out of my mothers arms and seeing her pass out when they took me away from her because they thought I was a harm to myself and they said legally, they have guardianship over me now I did exactly what she did. I lied my way out of there. I acted like I was completely normal and happy and finally within a month or a little over I got out of there it was called Parkwood in Olive branch Mississippi. I am so proud for Maya and her family my her mother rest in peace.

there are more sadistic nurses out there than we like to think. My ex was recovering from a surgery and was TORTURED by his nurse (with the breathing tube), horrible horrible horrible stuff. Not sure how can prevent.
Nursing, especially RNs, is highly skilled work and until we (society) start valuing the role as a highly skilled job, the pool of applicants will continue to be small and the shitty applicants will slip under the radar because no one is treating it like it's an important job.
Education being more accessible/affordable would also help so everyone can have the option to get a full nursing degree RN rather than lower-tiered certifications. Then you have a more educated a populous.
Plus idk if you've seen those ads over the last two decades pushing people who don't know what they want to do with their lives (no shame there) to get a basic nursing degree as a career. Like those ads about learning coding or computer science or tradeswork as career options? They have been doing that for nursing too. So these degree-certification companies profit off of drawing in people who just see it as a job. Versus historically people go into medicine because they're scientifically-inclined and they're caring.
I feel like a lot of this applies to teachers, too. If we all treated the job as important, we'd have a bigger and better pool of applicants who take their job very seriously and are drawn for the right reasons. And institutions that hire for the right reasons.

Talking about truly sadistic people, like deliberately harming people, I think it also goes back to giving so little attention to such an important role.
I can certainly see a sadistic person being drawn to a role like this because they know no one gives nurses any attention. Using the disregard people have for the nursing profession TO THEIR OWN BENEFIT. Attracted to being in that power over the patient while in an "invisible" role...
drs are worse in my opinion, but you CAN refuse treatment and insist, loudly, on a different nurse. I have done this and it works (usually)
