"Deep fried mars bars" aren't a thing found on many menus outside of tourist attractions like Edinburgh, Story of its creation was in the papers years ago, A drunk English student thought he was being smart in a chip shop, "Will you deep fry this? Will you deep fry that, you jocks deep fry anything up here?" that sort of thing. Guy ended up saying "look mate you're holding up the queue I'll deep fry anything you want as long as you pay for it" so he asked for a mars bar thinking he was smart and got sold a 60 pence bar of chocolate for a fiver. They're apparently not bad, I wouldn't know, its not a thing Scottish people eat.
@@theroamingcook just saw you don't give the wee lad shite but don't mind a treat, brilliant mate. We got brought up on absolutely filth food in the UK nice to see folks being sensible
Don’t know if you knew this but scones are actually a Scottish creation and are believed to be named after Scone (pronounced to rhyme with soon) where the palace and abbey of Scone is located. It’s where the Stone of Destiny was located and the monarchs of Scotland sat atop it to be proclaimed. There is a replica there but the original is in a new museum in Perth, Perthshire which isn’t too far away. It’s also quite common for Scottish stews and steak pies to have sausages in them, which is something my Mum used to do and those stewed sausages were always lovely. But with Hogmanay and Ne’er Day (New Year) traditionally being a more important celebration in Scotland than Christmas, Steak Pie, mash and veg is the traditional Ne’er Day’s meal…but you’ll never find kidney in a traditional Scottish Steak Pie, only large chunks of steak and occasionally (if you so wish) chunks of sausage.
@ 👍🏻🤪 Glasgow boy here, I’m over the moon you enjoyed your time in Scotland 🏴 especially the food, one place you must go if you haven’t been in a drive through Glencoe 👍🏻 it will make the hairs on your body stand up and reduces some people to tears with it’s beauty 👌🏻
Brilliant, Scotland is on my bucket list and your foray into Edinburgh was another reason I need to go! I have heard about Haggis forever, but being in the states, it isn't something one finds here. Having eaten at several of your recommended places in Bangkok, when you liked the Haggis, I've got to give it a go now that a trusted reviewer liked it. Thanks, Gary, for bringing us along with your family on your trip and showing us some great Scottish food to try, those places are going into my Maps pin collection. Cheers Mate!
I love Haggis, neeps and taties, never had ot with that sauce. Shortbread biscuits and scones are delicious 😋. I miss being in Scotland but not the weather. I now live in Spain 🇪🇸
Really good video Gary, good production, shots of Edinburgh and even liked the Scottish tunes on top. Not just cos it's in my old stomping ground. Think you'll need to start doing more of these travel videos. There's a good Thai restaurant in Edinburgh on Thistle street called 'Dusit'.
We have Mars bars in Canada! I also judge a restaurant by their fries (chips) if they are hand cut and double fried they deserve a michellin recognition! When you're back in Bangkok we are going for proper poutine!
As a lover of intestines and organ meats, I'd really love to taste that haggis which I've never found anywhere here in the States. The comfort food at Mums also looks spot on, especially in that Scottish climate. The mars bar and the pastries seemed ok, but the only sweet dish that looked good was the raspberry one at the end with the soaked oats. The finnan haddie chowder would be a fitting closer to a day in Edinburgh, I'm sure. I think a trip to Scotland would cause me to say "I'm just here for the food". Been waiting three days to watch this since life intruded, but I'm glad I watched.
Really enjoyed even if super strange watching you blog in my hometown instead of BK! The weather is why we come to Thailand for holidays. Glad you loved the food and were open minded on the haggis. Creamy sauce like that over the top is relatively recent phenomenon- never had that when I was younger but am now partial to peppercorn sauce on the side. My husband loves HP sauce on his haggis which is actually quite nice too! If you have Cullen Skink again I highly recommend a side of chunky chips on the side for dunking. Soooo tasty and absolute comfort. PS if you are probably 21% Scottish that usually means you are a 100% American tourist!! PPS am now curious is your Thai accent sounds as funny to Thai people as your Scottish accent does to me ;-)
good vid, the royal mile stretches between the castle and the palace, the cathedral (church it doesnt have a bishop) is only about a quarter way down ;)
If you're missing some Thai food I can highly recommend Ting Thai Caravan on Tivot Place or Lothian Road. The food is excellent and reasonably priced, some great dishes on the menu too! Glad you're trying some Scottsh tucker!! :)
Hi Gary and family 🎉 great video and interesting. May you will eat something in Ireland? If you pass by. I had a lot of Irish customers last week, they are very friendly and smiling people 😊. Young Japanese ladies are smiling a lot and a little bit shy, it's funny. North Americans are super nice, most of the time. I still don't see any Thaï tourists... IDK why. ✋🏻 Hi five from France Guys 👋
Och aye away up the road Gary. A great city & a great vid but you know the royal mile isn’t the best place to find the best place food. Had to laugh when you said the cold is getting into your bones 🥶 get back to Thailand before the winter 😎
Sadly, a bit stereotypical. Scotland has some of the best seafood and game in the world, and here we have deep fried mars bars. It’s a bit like going to Thailand and showcasing Pad Tai, Banana Pancakes and Mango Sticky Rice.

Tried a deep fried Mars bar years ago in Skegness, never had one since. Too sweet for me.
Am Scottish, eat deep fried mars bars.
Anecdotal evidence isn't fact.
The Cathedral is about a third of the way down the Royal Mile!
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is at the bottom.

Omg one of the most beautiful cities in the world - Haggis is awesomeee! (& so is Cullen Skink!! 🐟🥛🚬)
Definitely!
At State fairs in the US, they batter and fry candy bars, Oreo cookies, twinkies, you name it they batter and fry it LOL
I didn't think I would like Haggis because I am not a fan of offal but it was truly delicious at the place we ate it at in Edinburgh
So good
You could always try Cullen Skink in Cullen😁 Nip into Anstruther for some Fish & Chips & Arbroath for a Smokie.
