Going 'batty' with beans and the midges for tench!! Lovely peaceful session on a great looking lake. Nice tench in the net too John, just the relaxing tonic we all needed, cheers Peter.
Although you only caught one this time John it still made for a great video, giving all us fellow anglers hope of warmers times to come. And a stunning lake to boot. 🎣🎣🎣
Very kind of you to say so, Graham 💙 It was one of those sessions (and therefore videos) that wouldn’t have blown anyone’s socks off around the time it was made - one tench on a tricky day - but hopefully makes for a daydream inspiring watch in winter! 🥶
Thank you John, enjoyed being on the bank on a Summers day. Good therapy to keep away SAD. I'm pretty sure that over the years I have tried most of the contents of the kitchen cabinet and many of them worked to some degree. The two that rarely failed being tinned sweetcorn and soaked currants. Cheers 🧔 👍
Soaked currents! 🤯🎣🐟 That’s a new one on me, although I have very fond memories of reading about them in Roald Dahl’s Danny Champion of the World! Probably my favourite book as a kid and they soaked up the currents before slicing them open with a scalpel and placing crushed up sleeping pills inside, before feeding them to the pheasants (which promptly fell out of the trees later that night). A poaching masterclass. Just in case you’re not familiar with the story 😄 But I never thought to try them for fishing… Nice idea 👍💡
@themagicoffishing They work well with a biscuit ground bait and open end feeder tackle. If water is clear, add leam to darken mix. Bream, roach, crucians and the odd small tench so far. I reread Danny couple of years ago, found it in a charity shop and thought, why not! It's the inner child that takes us fishing, not the grumpy old buggers we become. 🧔 👍
Cheers Chris. Yeah, I just landed back from a work trip to Sweden and although it’s feeling a bit warmer here it’s looking pretty grim as I crawl round the M25!
A beautiful venue. Nice fish and the warmth of a summers evening. Like you I became aware of stewed wheat when watching and older Angler fishing with it on the upper Trent catching large Roach. Needless to say the next visit my hook was baited with wheat. I caught Roach that were well above the average size usually caught. It's a long forgotten bait that needs revisiting by more anglers. Stay safe and thanks
Lovely to see this reminder of summer evenings as we approach midwinter! I have been using a variety of beans as bait for carp on an old estate lake in Sussex. I usually use the float as the carp here seem to prefer baits like corn, meat and bread to pellets and boilies. No idea why, as the place is quite lightly fished due to difficult access. I started using beans to try to put off small roach and rudd, and that does work quite well - the bigger roach and rudd will take them, but I’m always happy to catch those. The carp certainly go for them. I’ve used black-eyed beans most, but also had success with haricots and cannellini beans. I’ll try more varieties next season, and follow your example and give them a go for tench as well. Might give the baked beans a miss, though! Keep up the good work with the videos, I always enjoy them.
Thanks for a lovely comment 👍😊 Glad to bring you a bit of summer and good to hear you’re onto the beans as well. Just like you, I don’t mind catching better roach and rudd when I’m fishing for tench and/or carp. A few have commented about using peas, particularly for good silvers, so I’ve added that to my to do list!
I’ll have to add peas to my list of legumes to try! I guess using beans and peas is not so different to using tares, which are also legumes. When I first started fishing they were really popular as a bait for picking out bigger roach. I still use them sometimes and have had tench and carp on them as well as silvers.
Nice video. Good to be reminded of what Summer looks like. I've used garden peas in Ireland to good effect. Good to change the bait sometimes. Keep the videos coming for my Friday afternoon armchair fishing!
Cheers John, I will do my best 🤝 Peas are a new one on me! I mean I’ve heard of them being used but never tried myself. It’s amazing - been fishing for over 45 years and there is still plenty new to try! 👍🎣🐟
A great reminder of Summer evenings. That old estate lake looks lovely and mature, an anglers dream. I have kept the essence of Summer alive in our house by making several batches of Elderflower champagne and wine which is due for opening in the coming weeks. Late summer gave us the berries which makes the best country wine imo, as good as if not better than say a decent Merlot. Cheers🥂🍷and compliments of the season to you. Tight lines.
Hello mate, well this was sonice to watch, and after a week of dull days to t see the sun was just a reminder as what is arriving next week, im hopeing to get out on Sunday before going to mums, great job mate, as always all the best.
Thanks as always, Clive! I’ve been away for a week with work (Sweden, which was 🥶) but I hear it’s been dreary here. Glad I could provide a ray of warm sunshine ☀️👍
Thanks for the video John.. Lovely looking Tench and great to see it on the traditional float as well ! 🎣🎣 I have used kidney bean to good success, but never tried wheat, so this might be a good trial for us next summer. Cheers Paul.
Ahh summer, i remember that..! What a lovely video again John.👍 It felt like i was there with you..😊 One of my favourite venues for Crucian's and Roach using the don't fish just feed for 3hrs method like Hampton Ct and Aragon Av. Thank you for your dedication my friend.. YUP it's another ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s plus ⭐ for the memories..😉👍
Great video once again Sir ! And what a lovely venue / fish ! I have never caught a tench, but have tried a few times. A fellow club member a few swims along from me on the River Wantsum was catching some lovely ones on float ledgered corn earlier this summer, I tried the same and blanked. Next visit I fished his swim, again with the corn and had lots of other fish, but no Tinkas As for baits - fishing the Kentish Stour earlier this year, I was unhooking a lovely perch that I had caught on a free lined worm, as I was unhooking it spat out a massive black slug, so I thought why not ? Stuck that on the hook and just dropped it under my rod tip, within a couple of seconds a lovely chub ( my largest from the Stour ) grabbed it. The slugs come out on the bank there as the afternoon wears on, so once they appear I pick them up and stick them on the hook, free bait from the bank and fishing it free lined or on a light ledger - have had roach, chub, perch, bream and eels in the last hour before packing up. As a lad I once saw an older guy ( must have been at LEAST 40, absolutely ancient !! ) using birds eye frozen peas on the Medway at Tonbridge, ( Postern Lane ) he was getting lovely roach and rudd every cast , never tried them myself but may well next season now that you have reminded me. When I asked him about the peas he told me it was an unplanned visit and he hadnt any other bait available other than bread ( which he was using as a mash loosefeed ) so was trying the frozen peas for the first time. Have a great weekend John ( off to watch your suggested videos now )
A fantastic comment as always and I enjoyed the little stories within it. You are the THIRD angler to mention peas in response to this video and now I’m thinking I’ve got to give them a go sometime… 🤔👍 A real shame you’ve not yet had a tench but that’s a brilliant target to have for 2025 and they are not common or easy fish to find in most rivers of course. I’m lucky to have a few stillwater venues with good stocks around here, but they were a mythical fish for me, too, until I moved south from Sheffield. There are a few places up there, but not loads. As I replied to another comment about slugs, I’m pretty sure I’ve tried them on the hook before but, unlike you, not yet managed to catch something on them. Cheers for now 🍻🎣🐟
Great to see other baits used instead of pellets 🙄..I have used peas and carrots(cut to hook size).even sultanas lol ....and added flavouring 😊.....works a treat too 👍
Another fantastic video, when I used to go fishing with my nephews and their mum, we tried Mexican bean salad had some interest from the fish but didn't hook anything, another. Bait was feta cheese
Feta! Now that is exotic 😄 Can’t say I’ve tried it and aside from good old cheese paste I must say it’s been a long time since I last tried cheese of any kind on the hook. That’s the beauty of fishing - the options and ideas are virtually endless! 🎣🐟
Lovely tench John, what a lovely place to spend a summers nite eh mate, I use the wheat regular in some of the ponds I visit and have used the kidney beans when carp fishing with good results but them carp will eat anything when on the feed, hopefully will try baked beans one day, cheers again ,
Ever use slugs for bait? I used to use black slugs for Tench. Of curse they are generally an easy bait to find and use. Just lay down a piece of wood in the garden and the slugs will congregate under there. Enjoyed the video .
Ahhh now that's made me feel better, the darkest days of the year brightened by a summer s eve, I could smell those Elderflower next to you, my old man would've put them in a bucket of cold water overnight & made a cold Elderflower presse. Fishing with beans🤔 tench are known for bubbles on the surface giving away their location, no hiding place for them after kidney beans. 🫧💨
Just how dark is Sweden this time of year? Sun comes up winks it's eye & buggers off. I worked in Djurgarten in the late 90s building of all things a conservatory 🙄
What an uplifting video.
Summer seems like a distant memory.
Thank you.
What an uplifting comment! Much appreciated 💙🎣🐟

Thanks Peter! A bit of running water and some barbel for tomorrow’s viewing… Merry Xmas
What a wonderful venue, stirring the memories of old, lovely tench, tight lines, good health and safe travels, cheers craig
Cheers mate - a taste of summer ☺️☀️

The only fish caught was on a Black Bottom Float.

❤️🎣❤️
Haha! FACT 👍
Well, that's warmed us up on a winter's day, John.
My pleasure as always. Thanks for letting me know 👍☀️
Looks a lovely venue, great watch on a miserable day 👍🏻
Cheers Chris. Yeah, I just landed back from a work trip to Sweden and although it’s feeling a bit warmer here it’s looking pretty grim as I crawl round the M25!
@ any fishing in Sweden 🙏🏻

I seriously need to try it on the Trent! Don’t know why but I never have. Thanks 🙏
What a lovely bit of water you have access to John. Hope you’ve been back. Keep up the great work 🎣🎣🎣

Awesome 🤩😎 🍾 One of my younger brothers up in Sheffield makes his own wine and elderflower is a favourite. Bottled summer as you say 👍

Beautiful venue 👍I could fish there all day regardless. I’ve not been tench fishing for 20+ years might just have a go next year.
Spring awaits! 🎣🐟☀️

This is crazy 🤯 You’re the second person to talk about currants/sultanas AND peas (never used either). Bravo 👏

I think I’ve tried them but never caught on them 🤔 Probably because I’ve never given them a proper go!
well that was different from wednesday when it was thermal underwear and wooly hats.
Same result though one bite.
Hahaha! Yes, one bite! But we both hooked it and landed it and made the most of it! 🙌
