    I can imagine after Cody has passed, many years after, and people come to search his house to find all of his awesome experiments and inventions and then on his desk under the window light you see a box with the shrimp in still alive, eat and producing and continuing the cycle of life in a box.
    Please make a Shrimp In a Box Three please a few months after this one or when something happens to the first if ever and give us a update on the latest one.

    Iodine isn't bad for shrimp, as a matter of fact, shrimp like krill are high in iodine. BTW, you should try these self sustaining tanks with other species. Triops are a good option, so are Killifish and livebearing fish like guppies and platys. Killifish would be interesting, because their eggs can survive out of water. They are one of the few vertebrate animals that have a behavior called diapause, which stops or delays the growth of eggs until conditions are right

    Put some radiation source (Uranium Ore or small confined UV light) to induce the mutation and evolution of the species. Eventually, if only bacteria survive, they will be unique in the entire Earth.

      EcoSphere brand versions of this have been known to run with shrimp populations for 20 years, so I'd suppose 'lots'.
      I wonder if they end up genetically identical after a while.

    • @ADRdaniel
      @ADRdaniel 7 лет назад +8

      George Charalambous my hypnosis is that a simpler set of genetics is harder to mess up. So a low amount of seed genetics shouldn't effect the diversity of the shrimp. Also the system should not change in a wat that requires them to adapt. So the genetic downfall is more likely to be genetic drift then inbreeding. According to my hypothesis.

    I have a corked glass soda bottle with freshwater, algae, gravel, and some tiny daphnia-like animals. There used to be a little duckweed in there, but that has decayed after a period of not growing. There also used to be 2 small pond snails, but they never reproduced and later died. The algae growth used to fluctuate wildly, but it has now stabilized to a small "bush" at the bottom. It's pretty neat and shows no signs of stopping.

    1:30 You mentioned that it would need a shielding against radiation. As far as I know, some smaller creatures can handle lots of radiation. Like the LD50/30 for a human is somewhere around 3 Gray, whereas for a wasp its at about 1000 Gray (according to wikipedia). For smaller creatures like these shrimps it should be even higher, right? Would be cool it you could expose them to some radiation (but be careful).

    This is a pretty cool idea- Cody. I'm sure you could devise a way to replace the atmosphere and dissolved gasses for a really awesome experiment! Replace some of the inert nitrogen with more oxygen. How would a high-oxygen environment (say 30%) affect the brine shrimp over several successive generations?? What morphological changes could be observed? Increased size?? Changes in proportions? ... who knows??? You could simulate various atmospheres - at different periods in Earth history (like the Paleozoic era). That would be very interesting indeed. I'm sure the professors at Utah will all want one...
    How else could one go about devising such an experiment?? Your glass box is unique in this way. Once you set the basic atmospheric perimeters - that's it! It will last seemingly forever. I can't think of an easier way to conduct such a long-term "maintenance-free" experiment. What would happen in 20 years time if the culture is sustained? ...or 50 years?? Can you even imagine? Then crack 'em open and take a look at the biology.
    Anyway thanks for the upload, look forward to seeing more!

    • @Togmot
      @Togmot 7 лет назад +63

      Evolution does not always take millions of years. There are swallow populations for instance that live close to major highways who have slightly shorter wings than their normal counterparts because having shorter wings makes them more maneuverable and enables them to evade cars better.
      There are also rattle snake populations who have lost their ability to rattle since humans would kill them so much and one way to find them was to get them to rattle by pissing them off with noise so you could hear where they are. The ones with deformed rattles would survive more often because they didn't get killed by humans.

    Alright, wacky idea time: After long periods of adaptation to each box, could you start a selective breeding process with adults from each box and see if you can breed a super-shrimp of some sort? I'm talking like, subject one box to "enhanced gravity" via centripetal forces, subject another box to minimal light energy, subject another box to sustained water currents, subject another box to low temperatures, subject another box to high temperatures, etc. Do all of these things until each box's shrimp have adapted to thrive in each condition, THEN begin selective breeding to try to get offspring with multiple adaptations. It would take years, and each condition would probably have to be gradually increased over time until the shrimp are able to survive and thrive in each extreme condition.

    Hey Cody, the algae starter you had, was that algae growing in salt water, or was it freshwater algae?

    • @toucaninterieur8011

      I think he thought about it. It would be funny to see how the ecosystem would thrive without algae though.

      considering how much he knows that'll be a hilarious oversight.

      Maybe the algae can adapt or some spices in there can live in both salt water and freshwater

    • @KhronicD
      @KhronicD 7 лет назад

      It simply wouldn't work at all without the algae. The algae is what provides the conversion from co2 to o2 for the shrimp.

      The shrimp were from the salt lake, not the algae.

    Might be fun to install crossed polarizing filters around the block. Then it would appear dark, with glowing shrimp!

    Cody, a question. Begining at around 12:12 the projection of your laser on your wall (right half the of the video) looks like a rolling image of some sort (you can see blobs and patches projected and moving to the right). I can not understand how that got projected. Any idea?

      That or I'm too damn dumb to understand.
      If the radiometer was rotating COUNTER-clockwise, why was the chamber rotating clockwise?

      @@theCodyReeder Dear Cody I have a question too. I wont ask strictly why did you end this video with such a great experiment for human race... I mean... If I understand nature right - we should just add a bit of copper coil and neodymium magnet thingy to make a solar engine... Can you contact me please - I wont be annoying - just few questions. Please man - Dnt wanna ask anything else here. Ty! Looking forward to hearing from you. From Russia with love!

    I have never gotten this much enjoyment out of one of your videos, this one is strangely entertaining and inspiring, as of about 3 minutes ago, I just purchased some brine shrimp online and I have found all the ingredients necessary to make my own self sustaining eco-system, there will be a video of this on my channel within about 2 or 3 weeks (depending on how long it takes the brine shrimp to arrive!)

    hey cody,
    ive always thought the sealed self sustaining system was an awesome idea. remember when the "bioshere" project went into effect?
    anyway, i have a Q: would a sealed system, such as your shrimp box or grass container, gain mass, (however small) due to conversion of sunlight into sugars/energy => mass??
    would the container fill up eventually?
    anyway, hope your well. :-D

    • @dopey_duck_944
      @dopey_duck_944 2 года назад +1

      No the sugars have to be made from pre-existing particles, sunlight is just an energy source to allow it to happen

    • @rchuno

      Hoby stores have them with holes drilled already, Hardware stores have them, tend to be in the shower sections as they get used in shower stub walls and such to let light in.

  • @Oxxyjoe

    Radiation shield? If they don't freeze first

    • @fullsend2908
      @fullsend2908 7 лет назад +8

      the water would not freeze because energy is distributed on earth through contact if there isn't anything in space nothing touches the glass container meaning any energy that is produced by the container in the form of heat would just build up until the container is too hot to support life or until it breaks

    • @fullsend2908
      @fullsend2908 7 лет назад +6

      but more than enough would build up to overheat the glass
