At the risk of repeating this again, BrahMos' 450km-600km variants are operational with IN. They're currently testing 800-900km variant.
Edit: As for the tech, its rather widely known BrahMos is a JV, with much of the tech being hand-me-downs from Russia in the beginning. The powerplant itself is still the licensed Russian version, but India has parallely developed its own ramjet propulsion for the STAR project. That aside, subsequently parts of Brahmos have been indigenised by means of local sourcing of both domestically designed and TOT sub-components; indigenisation including both the above criteria stands at some 78pc as per BAPL right now. Upcoming BrahMos NG will also feature an AESA seeker and an ALCM role that no P-800 variant in service with Russia does.

Kinda weird they still carry 6km range depth charges when modern subs will kill them _wayyy_ before they get that close, and it's redundant since they already have torpedo tubes on their wings for short range ASW, and a helicopter for long range ASW. They could use the deck space and weight budget for more VLS instead, and put anti-sub missiles in the extra VLS if they need more ASW capabilities. Maybe the RBUs are for mine clearing? An impressive ship otherwise, if only USN would pull their head out with the Constellation frigate fiasco and build something this nice!

    • @indikart1
      @indikart1 3 месяца назад +2

Like others already pointed out, mine clearing, hidden subs in under sea ridges, improved range. There is a use for RBU other than all this. Subs are slow (except the nuclear powered US subs) once they run out of torps, fuel, battery charge (diesel electric) they are sitting ducks. Ship can close the gap and hit them RBUs. Firing torps not always effective as a sub could still have decoys in store. Having legacy systems are sometimes useful. Just like a AK630. That beast is perfect for drones, subsonic missiles approaching the ship. Just some thoughts...

Appartenly Argentina is looking to buy used Submarines to replace it's current ones, what do you thinkg?
Incidentally there's no company called General Electric anymore - it's a collection of completely individual companies.
Nilgiri class looks like a decent balanced design.
The other advantage of having an IR seeker on the missile is that it helps it tell the difference between a real ship and a decoy (radar decoys will have different heat signatures and vice versa).
One factor I would see as a problem is that India has used alot of different systems developed with alot of differnt countries, in geopolitical terms this means that unless India has complete ability to produce parts for all these systems (which it may do not sure). India needs to stay on friendly terms with all those countries (Russia/Israel) this may explain India's anti-Ukraine position maintaining it's relationship with Russia.

Brahmos search radar is very similar to the old Harpoon 2, with INS, Russian GPS in combo with high altitude and high speed is a very 1990s Soviet attack concept.
The high flying Brahmos is non stealth fast missile that has to fly high to lock on to targets as it has limited network centric, capability thus can be locked onto by the defending ship far further than a stealth low flying networked missiles.
Most modern smart anti ship missiles systems lately have gone the passive way with Stealth, Imaging Infrared, Electro optical, Artificial Intelligence, Networked Centric, Tercom for land attack, radar warning receivers, with the usual GPS and INS as this combination have a better chance to get through unseen with a last second pop up on the horizon.
If one thinks speed works just look at the Iranian attacks on Israel recently with most tactical ballistic missiles being intercepted, I was shocked as how many missiles didn't make it through and were intercepted, times have changed since the Gulf war I & II, also ships do have extensive ECM counter measures well most of ours do, of which are very effective on radar guided missiles not so on stealth IR missiles.

India has taken Russian design of Talwar class frigates to new heights. India & Russia are trusted strategic partners over the decades. Both are essential for each other even in economic terms . When Europe blocked Russian oil & gas, India bought from Russia and re-exported Russian oil to Europe while making its own profits in the way. India is smartly made lot of profit from this war while helping its old friend Russia in the process.

The Chinas weren't partners, just suppliers of components; the hull being based on a Soviet design (the super structure is Indian), similarly the Brahmos cruise missiles are a localised Soviet 800 Onik design, as are the AK guns and anti submarine launchers, while the turbines are US, the diesel engines are German, the radars and BARAK air defense missiles are from a joint venture with Israel, the helicopters US, the 76mm cannon and the project management are Italian, while the concept, colour, ensigns, uniforms, doctrine, are derived from British patterns.

Good on you India for building a solid ship, however, I SO strongly disagree that it's a more capable FFG than the Constellation!?!! Brahmos is neat and great for India, but not all that impressive really especially when the 16 NSM's(not Harpoons...) of the first Constellations are likely to be replaced by Hypersonic or at least high super-sonic HALO missiles that I guarantee will be orders of magnitude more capable than Brahmos and having 1000km range.
the SPY-6(3)EASR, I would choose a million times over MF-STAR as good as I know it is, as iv'e heard SPY-6 is essentially blowing people's minds with just how capable it actually is. I believe it...
We haven't even started to get into the difference 32 Celsius for a US ship for India which just has Barack (which is VERY capable missile, but just 32 cells..), US has QUAD PACKED ESSM II's(which should take up at least 8 whole cells), as well as 2×SeaRAM for point defense alone, plus the SM mix...

India is upgrading it's brahmos into long range and increasing the speed. Right now they have tested 800km range brahmos from ships, and placed orders for new version of brahmos,
And talking about numbers we are not any expeditionary force, we operate in our own area so no need of big vls numbers, their have been reports that brahmos was tested with the Western allies and if 2 launched at a warship even they couldn't intercept, so it's effectiveness compensates for the less vls.

I'm an Indian and I had the exact same thoughts, our BrahMos and Barak-8 are exceptional weapons but we lack a good quantity of those on our vessels. Another thing to keep in mind is that our vessels are mainly to operate in the IOR so we don't have the requirement of heavily armed vessels too. Hence they can't be directly compared.
You should look at our Vishakapatnam class of destroyers, they are essentially the same as these frigates but carry 8 more BrahMos, it's tonnage is almost same to Constellation class frigates too.

Looking at the published range numbers for the AK-630, I think I understand a little better why so many navies started adding things like the US RAM system, or other short-range interceptor missiles rather than sticking with arrays of gun systems. If the max range of the AK-630 is 5km, and a subsonic missile (lets call it 1200km/hr) is heading for the ship, it will take the missile about 15 seconds to cross that 5km distance. Not great, but still a decent amount of time given how many bullets these systems can throw out in a second. Now, if you have a Brahmos missile coming at the ship at Mach 2.5 (call it 3000km/hr), the gun system will only have about 6 seconds from the time the missile enters its maximum range to the time it hits the ship. That is still potentially enough time to intercept a single missile, but the margins for error are getting real small. If there is more than one missile coming in as part of a raid, things look even worse. The small interceptor missiles like the RAM the US navy uses aren't necessarily any more accurate or faster than the guns would be. They just have a longer range so the system has more time to deal with an incoming high-speed missile.
Also, just to be clear, I'm not insulting the AK-630 here. This is equally a problem for ANY high-speed-gun-based short range defense weapons. The US CIWS has the same problem. I honestly didn't get why the US was stripping guns off of CIWS systems and replacing them with missile racks. It seemed like they were trading the deeper magazine and lower cost of the gun for more range, but that still wasn't anywhere close to something like an ESSM. I hadn't ever actually done the math to figure out just how little time these guns have to intercept a missile that wasn't going sub-sonic and trying to be sneaky. Seeing the published speed of the Brahmos, I actually looked at the math, and I think it makes more sense now. The gun systems still have their place, but against a missile going at some multiple mach number, they just don't have enough time to get their job done reliably.
