  • GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 number 7029 "Clun Castle" (actually built under BR in 1950) took charge of the annual Christmas White Rose from Birmingham to York and back.
The weather was sunny and cold which gave excellent steam from the exhaust and good photographic conditions.
With a little help from our friend, Tom Evans, we can offer 5 different locations today - Frickley and Moorthorpe in South Yorkshire, Hillam in North Yorkshire and both Doncaster and Conisbrough in South Yorkshire for the return run, after dark.
Sadly a stopping train rather got in the way at Conisbrough but it's still an interesting sequence, well worth the watch.
    Recorded on 28th November, 2023.

They're lovely locos ... but this one was built under BR in 1950! - Andy

@@AndyDandanFisherSteam Yes but to with some minor changes to the original design. Still that wonderful sound of a GWR locomotive.

Hi Andy. Excellent footage. Good to meet you at Conisbrough what bad luck we had with that Sprinter. Cheers Simon.

Hi Simon. It was just a bit too typical I must say. There's so much that can go wrong - Andy

Love these trains! Really liked seeing them run in the dark! Have you ever seen a situation where the trailing diesel had to push or pull a train because the steam engine failed??

When steam locos get a problem they rarely fail completely. They tend to lose power. I've never actually seen a diesel having to push a dead steam loco. They're often there to help with acceleration so the trains can fit in between the modern trains running on the mainline - Andy
