  • This news feature created for KGW News in 1986 by Jon Tuttle and Milt Ritter features the Broughton Lumber Company lumber flume. The flume ran from their rough lumber mill in Willard on Underwood Mountain, to their finish mill in Hood, Washington on the Columbia River. It was nine miles long with a drop of 1000 feet. In it's day, it carried 40 to 50 million board feet of lumber. The mills and the flume closed shortly after this piece was filmed.

Hal Broughton and his girlfriend were on the cover of Life Magazine running that flume in an aluminum boat. Several people in that family did that in the same boat.
