    Most modchip detection methods on the PSX exploit the fact that the normal modchip is incapable of shutting off even after gameplay has started, and constantly injects the false disk wobble data into the CPU... which on an unmodified console is impossible, as the PSX's disk drive reader is not capable of detecting a wobble (Used to verify disk legitimacy and region info) once gameplay has started.
    So at various points, the game will exploit this by asking the console to retrieve the game's wobble data, expecting a complete failure. If nothing comes up, gameplay continues normally. But a non-stealth modchip will return a valid set of wobble data, which will alert the game to the console being modified and make it terminate itself with the error message.
    Nowadays, however, stealth modchips are very commonplace, and emulators are capable of bypassing the checks undetected. So these methods don't work often times anymore.

    I'm confused. Did the console just delete the software? Or did it just found out about the modship and says "Nah, can't play that". It would really suck if the modchip damages your console. I never had a modchip and thats why I'm asking

  • @JeffisWinning
    @JeffisWinning 3 года назад +20

    The way anti mod games work, is the disc looks for the mod chip code being constantly pumped into the machine even after the game boots. Stealth chips get around this by injecting the fake code at start up and then shutting themselves off before the game has time to look for the code.

  • @1Synner

    I have seen this particular screen twice in my life. The first was with Medievil 2. I thought it was some sort of disk error, cause it popped up only when I was about to start the stage "Whitechapel". Hell, I could use the cheat menu to bypass the stage entirely and continue playing the game (until I hit the final boss, where it would pop up again).
    The second time was when my Grandma bought my Spyro 3. After I booted it up and the Insomniac sign was presented, the animation for the ninja rhynoc started playing, before it would smash cut to the error screen. It was then that I realized it was NOT a disk issue.
    I don't think it's a thing for all games, as I had played and completed a variety of games on that console before it crapped out on my entirely and we had to replace it, but it certainly made me wonder exactly which games had this "SOFTWARE TERMINATED" error screen.
