In my opinion, Madonna is like cubic zirconia, but Cyndi Lauper is a real gem.
They are both great performers but Cyndi has an amazing voice. Such an exceptional talent.
Yep.🙂👍
Well put. Madonna music hasn't held up much it doesn't have alot of substance if you think about it including her hits
Madonna is a "Pop Star" but Cyndi is a 'Artist" in the truest sense of the word.
You got that right. Cyndi has pure talent. Unfortunately came up with madonna who relied on controversy rather than talent. Of course the public ate that up. But cyndi for actual talent
She is an icon. The difference for her is that she hasn't lived her life in controversy and infamy. There is a wholesomeness to her legacy.
Yes. Very, well said.
For a juxtaposition of Cyndi's style: "I Drove All Night" Live. The woman is actually a vocal powerhouse! A cultural icon. Love.
Cyndi is wonderful, but I've got to say my favorite version of "I Drove All Night" is Chris Isaak's. Whoa - you girls will understand why.🤣 IMHO Chris has the sexiest voice on the planet. 😍😍😍
I'm with you, I love Cyndi's version of I drove all night. Gives me goosebumps every time.
@@rubyslippers8215 Chris Isaak is a swoonfest no matter what he sings........
@@Lucy116 Cyndi's version of 'I drove all night' is one of my all time fave songs. I remember in the late 80's/early 90's waiting for days on end with bated breath for it to come on the radio so I could tape it with my cassette tape recorder as I loved it so much :). I hope BP does her original music video.
I commented the same before seeing these posts.... definitely agree! 🎉🎉
A few years ago, I was in a women's rights march here in NYC and as I was going I spotted Cyndi marching with us! I wound up next to her a bit later and I didn't want to disturb her by being a fangirl, but was just enjoying being in her presence when she turned my way and we both smiled and then she said "can you believe we are still marching for this"?! I said I know, right?! and we went our ways. She's so fierce and down to earth! I'll never forget it.
That's awesome! Thanks for a great story.
This is one of Cyndi's most beautiful songs, IMO. Her vocal range is ridiculous. Anyone who stand on their own is one I admire.
never could understand why Madona became popular and
Cyndi Didn't . I remember driving tha autobahn in 1980's listening to AFN Radio and my girls singing to Girls Just wanna have fun.
the were 3 and 5 at the time.
@@OutsideTheBoxAZ Cyndi was incredibly popular. In the more recent USA for Africa documentary, it was implied that the reason Madonna didn't get invited is b/c they already had Cyndi. However, Madonna was just more savvy in terms of generating hits.
Cyndi recorded this song in the mid 80s for her friend who was dying of AIDS at 24.
It was adopted by the LGBT community as part of pride and our rainbow flag but it’s really for everyone to show love and be themselves.😊
Cyndi Lauper, the only artist who was a Mega Superstar and Underrated at the same time.
Cyndi Lauper is iconic. She is three-fourths of the way to an EGOT. She doesn't have an Oscar as yet, but she has an Emmy for acting, multiple Grammys, and a Tony for her songwriting for Kinky Boots. She is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. And she has done this all without being as divisive as Madonna.
She should've won the Oscar for best song for the movie The Goonies.
That's right.
I’m a 51-year-old Australian male and has had a crush on Cyndi Lauper since I was about 15 years old and this was and is still her best ever song to date by far. The emotion in her voice and her quirky little lisp that she has sometimes if you pay enough attention to her songs is adorable even though she’s in her 60s now she still a very attractive woman and can still sing and sell out any concert she performs at
She’s now in her early 70’s and still looks and sounds great.
Had that crush also, still do.... It's why I married the woman I am married to.. the hair and that voice, what can I say, I'm a metal head and love Cyndi loads..
I forgot how beautiful is this song. I've heard Cyndi perform this live acoustically a few years ago. She's still an amazing performer
" Money Changes Everything " shows diversity and this woman can rock!
Cindi was always ahead of her time.
She’s a treasure and what a vocal range! Love her.
Now ***SHE BOP*** is a crazy one that swings in the opposite direction. Next!
Lady Gaga had openly stated in interviews that her fashion is inspired by the Madonnas and Cyndi Laupers of the world.
Madonna really? Her fashion was to wear as little as possible.
@@Jay-sg7rf, early years for Madonna had her looking as though she'd looted a dumpster. Only later did she downsize everything.
@@Jay-sg7rf Madonna had a MASSIVE impact on fashion regardless of how much or little she was wearing. So yes really. She was a maverick. They were both mavericks
She’s Bowie in drag.
@@Jay-sg7rf Back in the 80s? MTV didn't allow that. People even cosplay her for Halloween. Remember the pointy bras?
I never understood why most reactors shy away from Cyndi, loads of great songs, Money Changes Everything is a great tune, All Through The Night is a banger, Time After Time.. the list is huge.
All Through The Night should be your next song by her, the video where she is in concert wearing a leather skirt, and the picture looks blue is the one. ❤
Lauper's good friend Gregory Natal had recently died of AIDS when Lauper heard the demo of the song. She was thinking of Natal when she came up with her approach to the vocal, particularly the soft, whispering sections:
"I realized it had to be a voice that whispers to you. A voice that's almost childlike so it will speak to the softest, most gentle part of a human being. It's a voice whispering to you, telling you it's going to be OK."
Wow.....🥰❤
Cyndi Lauper was definitely as iconic as Madonna was and to some of the people in the world they preferred Cyndi Lauper over Madonna for not opening her music and sense of fun but her unique fashion says she was a trendsetter. never a sheep always a shepherd. and the top three most played songs in the world in order are #1 Girls just wanna have fun. #2. Time after time. #3 True colours. Yet as an Australian I have to say that this song was bigger here than all the other songs paeking at number three in the charts.
The idea of the song lyrics I see your true colours and that’s why I love you was meant to represent
Seeing past everyone’s external differences and seeing them for they truly are
Cyndi Lauper unlike other artists of her time always put her own influence into the song in a very deep way the writer of this song Steinberg quoted as saying
‘"Sometimes an artist will copy your demo exactly as you present it. That would be the case with 'Like a Virgin' or 'Alone' by Heart - the records copied the demos. In 'True Colours,' more than any other song, Cyndi Lauper came up with a very, very creative departure from our demo."
That right there sums up Cyndi Lauper to perfection will always be the most iconic 80s female pop singer to me.
I wouldn't say she was as big as Madonna, but she was an icon in her own right, and her style was a definite contrast to Madonna's, which set her apart. I'd call her style "boho punk." The hair is punk-ish but the clothes are more girly, an '80s take on hippie fashion.
In the first half of the 80s, Cyndi & Madonna were about even in terms of popularity, just like Michael Jackson vs Prince. But in the latter half of the decade, Madonna & MJ began dominating the competition. Madonna also co-wrote many of her hits.
Imagine being an artist from the 80's and being loved from day one, non-stop, and never having to be shocking or controversial really. She is a real gem, a pure artist. She is who she is and we never wanted her to be anything else.
My favorite Cindi Lauper song. It just showcases her voice so well.
I didn’t realize at the time how ahead of her time she was.
Cyndi & Madonna were contemporaries. Both had sort of a counterculture vibe and had similar punk-inspired styles early in their careers. Cyndi was always herself, authentic, outrageous but sweet and nonthreatening. Madonna was a chameleon. She started by using Catholic icography in a sexual context, then as she began to embody various archetypal feminine roles.
Cyndi definitely inspired other musicians and fashion in general. I've heard her described as the best female vocalist in Rock by more than one critic. She's a lovely gentle soul and she does a lot of charity work.
Also I believe Cyndi wrote a lot of her own songs and picked other songs very carefully to be authentic to herself. While Madonna became more of a commercial success, becoming more packaged, songs written for her and was sold as a certain brand of superstar.
Time After Time is my all time favorite from Cindy...and I'm an 80's girl...class of '84
If you heard Cyndi talk in her normal voice, you would never believe that she has such a wonderful singing voice.
She always marched to her own drum just like Madonna and Lady Gaga. This song is one of her iconic songs. She still performs.
She was known for her quirky style. She’s a large part of the reason we were all wearing things like fingerless mesh gloves, scarves tied all over the place, and neon back in the day. She was an icon right alongside Madonna, just with a different style and message. Madonna was glitz & glamour, strike a pose, and material girl. Cyndi was be yourself, have some fun, and if you get in a bad spot don’t give up just keep going.
I love Cyndi's voice and delivery here. The lyrics are beautiful. I heard her say recently on an interview that she was bullied and had rocks thrown at her for being different, how sad. I certainly know what feeling like an outsider feels like. She is still so beautiful.
Really from all I remember, the 'craziest' Cyndi ever got was which hairstyle was she going to have today. True Colors was in an older Polaroid Commercial. She also did The Goonies Soundtrack.
SHE WON BEST NEW ARTIST AGAINST MODONA BUT SHE STUCK TO BEING HER TRUE SELF! ENORMOUS TALANT AND COMPASSION…ONE OF A KIND IN THE BEST WAY! SHE DOES IT HER WAY
💖💖💖
Madonna wasn't nominated for best new artist at the Grammy awards against Cyndi.
Cyndi is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and she only needs an Oscar to join the prestigious list EGOT🔥🔥🔥
I seen Cyndi Lauper perform live in 1988 and got to hear this song firsthand and I have to say it sounded even better in real life that girl could sing plus as someone who was in love with her at the time being only a teenager with a massive crash on a quirky artistic musician I have to say that my favourite thing about her is the way that when she smiles her eyes close all the way to little slits it’s so unique and one of the trademarks I think. ❤. I hope she manages one more concert over here in Australia before her career is done 🎉
Cindi is a brilliant musical artist who has created her own path as a performer. This woman who performs “True Colors” beautifully, also wrote the music and lyrics for “Kinky Boots” a musical theater production I saw on a trip to London, UK a few years ago. It was outstanding and I wasn’t the only one who thought so. “Kinky Boots” won a Tony Award for Best Musical, a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, and London's Olivier Award. She not an artist to pigeonhole into a category.
"All though the night" is my favourite song of hers.
I adore this song!!! I hope BP sees this!!!❤
Cyndi is incredibly talented and is a true icon. This is one of my favorite songs from those days and I was a metal head, but she had an incredible appeal to everyone.
Cyndi is still awesome. I love anyone who dares to STAND OUT and I do the same thing ❤ I think this song is gorgeous 🤩
Cyndi has always been quirky and her own person. It's all reflected in her unique voice and her music. This song, to me, is very mystical. The video reminds me of a Salvadore Dali painting. Love, her...And BP, keep doing what you're doing the way you want to do it.👍
This song is in the Trolls movie. It's the best scene in the movie. Idk if your daughter has seen it....but you should watch it with her for sure. I cry everytime I hear it.
I've shared before that Cyndi was a guilty pleasure. A SECRET guilty pleasure for so many years. When I was young, listening to AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc with my friends, there was NO WAY I would say I liked her music. But I did. Still do. Finally saw her live, and she is so confident / owned the audience, super fun. So talented song writer, singer, and musician.
I find it so refreshing that a rapper like black Pegasus would do a reaction video, on a music video so far from the Rap genre and still appreciate it and it’s uniqueness and beauty you have great taste bro.
Lol yet he doesn't even know what a Pegasus is. 🤣🤣
"I drove all night", "All through the night" and "When you were mine" are all great
According to Billy Steinberg, the co-writer of "True Colors":
"Sometimes an artist will copy your demo exactly as you present it. That would be the case with 'Like a Virgin' or 'Alone' by Heart - the records copied the demos. In 'True Colors,' more than any other song, Cyndi Lauper came up with a very, very creative departure from our demo. The demo was sort of rooted in the gospel ballad tradition of a song like 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Let It Be' or 'Lean On Me,' that sort of thing with the piano. Cyndi completely dismantled that sort of traditional arrangement and came up with something that was breathtaking and stark."
"Tom and I were both elated when we heard her record of it because it was so much more adventurous than our demo, and to her credit, she produced it and did a beautiful job. That song, more than any other song I've written, has had tremendous life. I guess more than any other song that Tom and I wrote, that one seems to have the most universal appeal."
There are certain singers who bring more to a song than a voice. Cyndi Lauper's artistic vision makes her music step in to 3D.
On a side note, I've been to many concerts in my 70 years, and I recall Cyndi Lauper running up steps in a basketball arena, all the way up to the second tier, while singing, and not losing a beat or breath.
Think of what she did. To look like her, to sound like her and to become a pop star as a solo artist in the 80s is nothing short of amazing. She's an icon and has always been an inspiration of how to be true to yourself. Love Cyndi and love this song.
She absolutely was iconic. She even sang the theme song for The Goonies!
And wrote it!😊
The offspring of a Unicorn & a Pegasus is actually a UNISUS I did an entire back-piece of the joyous event- [mother unicorn cuddling her winged and uni-horned foal whilst a proud father soars overhead]. Baby unisus often are born in pastel rainbow coloring before taking the full colors of either parent.
Rightttttt! Like how to doesn't this guy know what a Pegasus is. 🤣🤣🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
I just discovered your channel about a week ago, and i have been binge watching it!! It gets kind of aggravating, because sometimes it is stopping me from doing things that i need to do!!! I get so drawn in to it, that i would not be able to tell you just how many reactions i had watched!! You have definitely helped my depression for sure. Cyndi Lauper has been one of my favorites for as long as i can remember, and i have been referenced to her from time to time. I have always been compelled to do my own thing, be my own person. This is probably one of the most iconic songs ever!!! She puts such meaning in to every lyric!!! A few years ago, i started playing the Ukulele and singing, and Cyndi Lauper and Billie Holiday are two of my biggest inspirations in my music and style. Cyndi is definitely a beacon of light in this cold dark world!!!! Thank you so much for this reaction!!! You seem to be very authentic and sincere, and it is so great to come home to these reactions, especially after yet another grievous night at work!!!!! I could write so much more, but i am off, and i have to get ready to go to one of my happy places and do my thing!!!!!! Have a beautiful day!!!
This one always gives me goosebumps. Definately a song for all daughters and sons all over this world. Never be afraid of showing your true colours, cause everybody is beautiful the way they are❤
This song was a number 1 smash on the billboard hot 100 in 1986.
Phil Collins covered it in the 90s
She did a Soundtrack for The Goonies. LOVE that song and video as she had most of the cast.
Phil Collins does an excellent cover of this... but it doesn't have the same innocence feel that Cyndi brings to it.
Some more amazing Cyndi Lauper songs: 'I drove all night', 'Money changes everything', 'All through the night', 'When you were mine' (written by Prince), 'She bop', 'The Goonies R Good enough' (from The Goonies film)... just to name a few.
I always get goosebumps when I hear this song
She always did her own thing. Wrote her own songs, too. This is the original version. There have been a lot of covers of it. Also was in a commercial or two
"I'm gonna be strong" is one of my favorite's of hers that really show her range.
This song is timeless...the words need to be heard today...feelin' it now even though back then I didn't.
"I'M GONNA BE STRONG" by Cyndi is another Amazing song to react to. She is so Incredible!!
"True Colors" was written by the songwriting team of Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who also wrote Madonna's "Like A Virgin," Heart's "Alone," and a song originally intended for Roy Orbison called "I Drove All Night", which was initially a hit for Cyndi Lauper.
"True Colors" is about looking below the surface to see what a person is really like.
They also wrote eternal flame by the bangles. an amazing songwriting duo to be sure
This is one those songs by the intro alone you know it's coming after your heart. Now it's an anthem. Same with Time After Time. That's the thing about this artist. Not just a great and creative musicians but someone who understands the art of earning the audiences respect.
"Support the OG content" That's cool that you prompt that. FYI to anyone all you even have to do is click and load the artists link and to give them props for it.
I remember when this song and video came out. It was so different from other songs and videos from Cyndi Lauper. The video and lyrics were captivating and the entire production made this an instant classic! BTW, we called winged unicorns "winged unicorns" back in the day. I had a large collection when I was a child. 😉
4:31 My first thought was, this is something I feel like Alynia would love, and then u totally said it! I love everything 80s!!
Ive loved her since i was a little girl. Still have my albums & cassettes. I also loved her in the movie Vibes w/Jeff Goldblum.
This song alway brings a tear to my eye! I love it soooo much. True Colors wasn't written by Cyndi Lauper but she was the first to release it. It has been covered by a ton of artists but since you have a young daughter, you may have heard it on the animated film, Trolls performed by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick.
A lovely choice for your daughter, with a beautiful message.
LOVE the lyrics to this tune!! Cyndi did SUCH A GREAT JOB on this song!! I always took this song as, sort of a tribute to herself, as a child, and all the little girls out there who are afraid to really divulge who they ARE - when, they're really beautiful, inside!!!! LOVE THIS SONG!!! SUCH a GREAT TUNE!!!
All through the Night is another single from her debut album, another beautiful soft pop song. No music video, but live performance from live in Paris 1987. She delivers a great performance with her unique outfit. ❤ Cyndi Lauper 👍
I’ve loved this song for years but never saw the video til today. I’ve always felt that it was meant to inspire young children. Glad to know that you agree! I’ve been following you for about a year and enjoy it very much.
It’s in the original “Trolls” movie, sung by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick.
She a great live performer she 71 years old great song she bop
Apparently Ann Murray turned this down before Cyndi recorded it. Cyndi to me is more of a guiding light and resonated more with me personally than Madonna. Yes she is fierce. Imagine the strength she must of had to, not only survive the male dominated music industry, but to thrive! Hats off to Ms Cyndi Lauper
"Your true colors are beautiful...wike a wainbow." 😊
Who doesn't love Cyndi Lauper.
...besides Quincy Jones.
Are you kidding? Quincy Jones *loved* Cyndi! Didn’t you ever watch the documentary about “We Are The World”? He adored her! *And* Lionel Ritchie! They *all* did!😂❤️🙏
Haven't heard this song in so long but it brings tears to my eyes. It's just so beautiful.
I still love Cyndi all these years later. I have read the story of her life growing up...what a great read 💥...as an 80s kid - I can tell you Cyndi is absolutely iconic...she is a part of that whoke yransition from the 70s to the 80s which also included all tge fashion. Cyndi was colouring her hair in all the colours back then that everyone is using now 💥💥💥
Cyndi covers a beautiful song "I 'm gunna be strong". Her talent and vocal range shine through with this one!
One of the most unique artists that came out in the 80's. A must see and it will be great to see her live and react to her awesome performance from one of her singles from first album, which the music video is live "Money changes Everything"
You’re never going to please everyone, P, but I love your reactions and your fresh, honest responses and your not afraid to get it wrong to that end. This is the perfect song for this comment, lol, she is saying be your true, honest self, that is the part that is loved.
Such a great song!!!
I've seen Cyndi several times great shows she's still touring!!
So is Boy George seen him 2 yrs ago hes still great too
Grew up listening to her, love her unique style & out of the box performances. Girls always feel empowered by her. ❤
I love this song
Phil Collins recorded True Colors for his 1998 Greatest Hits compilation. His version was released as a single and became very popular on Adult Contemporary radio stations.
Loving you coming to love Cyndi. Cyndi is currently doing her final tour. I have tickets for her stop in Chicago in December. Can’t wait! Saw her back in the 90’s. It was magical.
This song is really beautiful and calming.
As a 42 yr old woman i love her. Cyndy has always been ahead of her time and has also been a great role model to women all over the world.
She's 71. Are you meaning you're 42?
@jenniferl.9947 yes I meant I am 42. Should have worded that differently. Sorry

@@solleytara no problem! I was just confused. 🤷♀️
She’s still active but in a different part of the music scene. She actually wrote the music and lyrics for the Tony Award winning musical, Kinky Boots. Although they weren’t in the original cast, Wayne Brady and Tiki Barber were actually in the musical on Broadway.
This song was about Cindy laupers brother, bow much she lo ed him and would alwaysbe there for him.
A unicorn with wings is a pegasus. I saw her in concert, she entered through the crowd behind me. We high fived. At one point she was alone on the stage, must have been 20 instruments on the stage. She played all of them, and played them well. Harp, guitar, drums, sax, flute, and so on. What a talent.
Really? As far as I know the offspring of a unicorn and a pegasus is a unisus.😊
A Pegasus is a horse with wings, no horn. A unicorn is a horse with a horn. An alicorn is a unicorn with wings.
One of my favorite tracks from her!
This song always makes me emotional. It like my inner child having a word with me when life's just getting crazy or those self doubts creep in. And when I've cried those tears. I feel better and much more connected ❤. Search for a hero by M People is also one of those songs
This song has been covered by many folks. I have heard this song on commercials and with other campaigns. That may be what you are thinking of. This is one of my favorites. It's all about exclusivity. In the 1980's this was huge with AIDS raging and everyone afraid with the stigma.
BP, you are my favorite reaction channel. And I have watched quite a few different channels, but clearly you have eclipsed them all. Just keep doing your style, because it is why i watch! And one my favorite Cyndi Lauper songs is "Change of Heart". And if you ever get a chance to watch her in one her past concerts, she sounds amazing.
Having listened to this song more times than I’ve had hot dinners one of the things I noticed about her vocals In this song is when she says ‘ beautiful like a rainbow’ once you listen to it enough times it starts to sound like beautiful like a wrainbow with a slight W sound at the beginning of the word rainbow. It was one of the small quirks her voice held. She also made a cult classic film of the time called ‘VIBES’ A VERY INDIANA JONES STYLE FILM ABOUT A GROUP OF PSYCHICS TRYING TO UNCOVER SOME SORT OF MYSTICAL TREASURE OR SOMETHING. I CAN’T QUITE REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS THAT WAS SEARCHING FOR AS I WATCHED IT WITH MY GIRLFRIEND WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD AND I’M NOW 51. Still one of my favourite movies to date.
I think the movie you are talking about was about a hidden city of gold
It was used in several different commercials (With different singers) - at one point for a camera commercial back in the day. Perhaps that is where you have heard it. Many have covered it since this one.
Her song Time after Time Makes me cry every time
Cyndi Lauper was a unique character in the 80's ... when she hit in 1983 with "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" she was already 30 years old (but was often lumped in with the "young" artists of the time period who's appeal to the teens and early twenty-somethings often had her playing the very youthful "girl" in her videos) ... she had a style all her own (often appearing in what we might call "thrift-store chic" back in the day - where it was a mix & match of different colors ... and she had a rainbow blend of hair colors). She had a sweet "little girl" tone in some of her songs and a hard hitting raspy edge in others. She wasn't afraid to do something different & BEING DIFFERENT was almost a trademark of hers throughout her early career.
Lots of great music to explore if you choose to continue listening to her tunes... enjoy!!
Funny that you said it reminds you of those movies. The premier for this music video was played just before the Labyrinth in theaters. I first saw it at a drive in theater what i was a child. First this song, followed by the movie. They were perfect together 🥰
Not a cover. So glad you took a chance on her!
In a world where people are constantly shunned by meaningless things like what they like, what they wear and even who they are attracted to... We all need a soothing and powerful voice like hers to tell us to not be afraid and just be happy being ourselves.
Cyndi Lauper is LEGEND!! Majorly impactful in the 80's for sure!!
When Whitney Houston did a commercial (for Kodak or Polaroid, I forg3t which one) in the 90's singing a clip of this song, my 14 months old niece would stop, come to the television amd stare, mesmerized! She love the song and commercial 😊
I remember the Kodak commercial using this song from the late 80's. It was my introduction to this song as I rarely heard this over the radio, other Cyndi Lauper songs seemed to play all the time, but this one was rare. But I used to adore the Kodak commercial too because of this song!
This one of my favorite songs. It reminds of a moment in time with my husband now gone, as we watched a picture show of beautiful shots while this played.
