Yeah you know there serious about joining NATO by not using NATO ammunition 🤔……oh by the way don’t tell anyone one Walter Mitty but there adopting NATO standard ammunition it’s sort of a prerequisite for joining NATO 😉
The M1 definitely isn't standard for most conscripts, most get the older versions with fixed stocks and no rails at all. Mostly infantry receive these, high-readiness units receive M2s sometimes, and other infantry conscripts receive 95s.
In the era of smaller caliber assault rifles, Finnish choice feels really weird, even more so, when we are part of NATO, which inlcludes standardization of equipment. Sure, 7.62x39 might have its minor advantages, but even Russia changed to AK-74 (5.45mm) AGES ago. This coming from a Finn that knows different weapon systems, like small-arms.
@@BlackStar250874 1. Se että me valittiin 7.62x39 ei ole mitenkään outo. Se on lähes täydellinen kaliiperi Suomelle. 2. Syy miksi Neuvostoliitto vaihtoi 5.45 on turha argumentti koska neuvostoliittolla oli erit syyt ja tarpeet
Finland is currently looking to start replacing the RK-62 with Sako's new M23 rifle based on the AR platform. The caliber is the one that the FDF is currently running tests on whether to go with 5.56x45mm NATO or 7.62x51mm NATO. The current prediction is that they might go for both but mainly go for 7.62 for most infantry units but then 5.56 would go to troops operating in urban environments.

It is an AK derivative though. I don’t think inspired is the right word as it has most parts interchangeability with most other AKs. It is like saying the m16 was inspired by the AR15. It is a bit more than just inspiration.
It is very much an AK but it's not parts interchangeable with almost anything else. The SAKO / Valmet AK's have proprietary bolts, pistol grips, handguards, thread pitch etc.

Greatest AK ever made.
Great introduction 😊
greatest AK variant there is
You know they are serious when they are not using the weak 5.56x45 nato round.
They are switching to 5.56/7.62

@d-rob5513 not necessarily. Romania has been part of NATO for 2 decades and still use 7.62x39

This looks more like the RK 95 TP than the 62?
This is one is RK 62 M1 as he mentions in the video. RK 95 TP has folding buttstock, RK 62 M1 has adjustable buttstock
@ ok

It's 60 years old design.
Does finland have any plan to switch to 5.56 NATO ammunition?

Inspired is fine for general audiences. There's not much value in hair-splitting over the semantics.
It matters when it comes to russian propaganda.

@matteusvirtanen392 oh! good to know!
He said its based on the soviet AK's which is the right word to use because its a AK variant.

Nato rifles freeze here in winter. 5.56 is just a childs play cartridge.
5.56 is designed to wound, not kill, to put strain on enemy forces by necessitating casevac
