Why does no one ever mention that this is the perfect example of how to do density right? I don't think most people fully appreciate what this really is. It is so much more than an oddity!
Nowadays it’s all about fast. Why spend time building something nice and functional? No one gives a $h1t what we want. It’s about what they want (in their own pockets).
It is an intriguing architecture. The 1st time I saw Habitat '67 was in the 80's: I was at île Sainte-Hélène and I saw this construction from afar that immediately caught my attention because I wondered what it was. My first thought was it looked like a bunch of boxes sitting on top of each other.
People who don’t “get” brutalist architecture really must take a look at this: it’s lovely _and_ practical _and_ not so pricey to build or maintain! ❤️
It's one of the most beautiful structures I've ever seen. I would say if they maybe did a little sandblasting and other little touchups, it would be splendid looking. It looks a little "cellblock" (ish) now, but if they cleaned it up and maybe even repainted it or whatever… It would be amazing and wonderful!
Surprised to hear some people say that it’s an eyesore... I think it’s beautiful. And based on what I saw of the inside of the units I’d live there in a second. Multiple views, lots of light and having an actual solarium would be so great... and you’re right beside the water too! Reminds me of some of the “space age” architecture that I saw in the Netherlands while touring Rotterdam.
I thought the wry visual commentary at the end, where the driver who hates Habitat 67 is driving by it, saying “I wish I could unsee it,” and once he’s passed the complex, he looks ahead and says “Ahhh, that’s better” - so the camera silently pans to show us what the driver’s now looking at… and it’s slab after slab of identical drab featureless monoliths, with neither beauty nor character, lol. That’s what the driver thinks is “better,” a world where everyone lives in identically anodyne office buildings. Amazing, what dull horror we brainwash ourselves into accepting is the norm.
I grew up in Latin America surrounded by many brutalist structures, as well as living in a brutalist-lite building - a brutalist-echoing or brutalist-inspired building, your might say, today surprisingly designated a national landmark - and that may partly inspire my immense fondness for well-expressed brutalist architecture. Plus it’s pretty practical near the equator: all those concrete breezeways provide ventilation, while the overhangs provide shade, and using poured concrete to quickly and cheaply house the flow of poor rural people suddenly flooding cities is far better than abandoning them to build shantytowns for themselves with cinderblocks and corrugated metal. Yay brutalist architecture! 🤘
It is cutting edge, even if not universally loved. Any great city has a variety of styles. Being on the island, it does not distract from the old architecture of Vieux Montreal.
Once again, you have gone above and beyond to amaze us. When I was younger I was selected for Canada World Youth and before sending us on this great adventure we all went for a few weeks to the old Labyrinth which adjoined Habitat 67. (Now it's a huge condo tower with a giant greenhouse) We often went to the convenience store that was in the Habitat because there are more amenities for these residents, you must have seen it during your visit. You did a great job as always.
When I saw the designs for BIG's King Street West condos in Toronto, I immediately thought of it as an upscale Habitat 67. The ideas are moving forward.
this is spectacular, I would love to live there. Solid and a bit weird, I would feel fantastic inside. its unreal and unique thats why its beautiful, . people who dont get it dont have a imagination and are narrow minded, wouldnt bother. This is the first time in nearly 60 years that I heard anyone call it an eyesore. I'm not a fan of brutalist architecture but it is a masterpiece. I would love to live there.
I can admire the skill and ingenuity needed to design this structure, I can even accept it's practicality. The rooms are even magnificent...but couldn't they have at least made the outside less ugly?
This great project was supposed to have a lot more units on the same framework but never completed to reduce costs and be ready in time for the Expo opening.
An interesting architectural concept with so much more potential to explore in my opinion. In my opinion it could be further improved by becoming greener/more botanical and with a more beautiful decorated less minimalist facade.
I think they should paint each block a nice fresh colour, whereby each block would be a different colour. It would look Lego-like, and would bring an updated freshness to this now historic legacy.

The function of the building is amazing. Each unit has views and solariums and access to nature. The form looks hideous with it's grey concrete. It reminds me of east block Russian buildings that have no style to their exteriors. The boxes also remind me of shipping containers as poor houses in some sci-fi movies. Although these boxes are far more expensive than those in District 9.
i hate that the purpose of this building is to provide a spacious and livable home to low/middle class residents, but now it became a luxurious and expensive building for rich people…

This is an architectural marvel that Montreal should be proud of.
I live in Garland Texas yet I'm still proud of it. It's awesome!
This building is crazy beautiful. You see the beauty of it from afar
I absolutely love it and most people adore habitat 67

They couldn't find anyone in Canada who thought it was an eyesore so they had to find some Brit who hated it.

Plus it does a lot with a little space.
A gorgeous, unique complex and must be wonderful to live in!

I saw this just last month September 8, 2021 it looks great and after seeing the inside wow! I’m leaving the USA moving to Canada!
This deserves to be recognized as one of the most brilliant pieces of architecture ANYWHERE. Arguably THE great piece of Brutalism.
Great video, learned a lot and really tempted to look into moving there in the future but PLEASE TURN THE MUSIC SIGNIFICANTLY DOWN!
Montreal is great .Living our daily life it is sometimes hard to realize how great is Montreal.

Literally outside of the architectural box.
I love Habitat. First saw it at Expo 67.
In another video were a pianist bought a part of this building, you hear that it is full of asbestos.

Looking at it far away I used to think it was ugly but now that I know the story.... Damn... I wanna take a look before winter crushes
I wonder if this can be replicated with containers but in a smaller scale help with affordable housing. While giving the occupants and outdoor space
Fascinating building, maybe the exterior needs a revamp to spice it up?
I always loved this and dreamed that I could live there ❤
I always thought this was a pipe dream. Truthfully the outside is not to attractive, but the apartments and or cubes are beautiful.
the architect has advance thinking.. imagine since 1970 but the concept is futuristic.. the architect is a genius.
Love it

I wish we had something just like it on the islands in Toronto's Inner Harbour. Very cool, guys. :)
They're building it, just not on the islands. Look at BIG's King Street West condo development.
Wow, thank you for telling me about this project! It looks great, and I can't wait to see more!
Unique. 🥰🥰😊😊👍👍👍
Far too many people are arch. and art dumb. This unique building holds up beautifully after all these decades. I would LOVE to live in it!!!
I really like this concept! Buildings should be functional not decorative imo, esp in harsh environments.
I saw a picture of this while searching "Brutalist Architecture". I thought it was a fake picture. I am shocked it's real!
The aging concrete sucks, but the architecture is very cool.
I can admire the skill and ingenuity needed to design this structure, I can even accept it's practicality.

Since it ages like any other building the color fades
Love it!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
one person's home is 5 cubes? that mustve cost a lot!
Jenga!
I was there ten years old at the time
Generally speaking people like symmetry. This structure obviously lacks it.
This great project was supposed to have a lot more units on the same framework but never completed to reduce costs and be ready in time for the Expo opening.
I wish this would be replicated in other cities. The structure could be updated to include tasteful solar and “passive haus” technologies.
An interesting architectural concept with so much more potential to explore in my opinion. In my opinion it could be further improved by becoming greener/more botanical and with a more beautiful decorated less minimalist facade.
Is there a waiting list to get in? If so, that speaks for itself.
