One of the best jokes about this movie I have ever seen was just: "Who ever would've guessed that the Barbie movie would've been about stopping Ken from doing January 6?" and I've been laughing about that since July.
I took my mom to see it because she had Barbie dolls when they were huge and then passed them down to my sister. She thanked me for letting her cry with a smile and I thanked her for trusting me enough to cry next to me. It seems silly as a concept, but so many women, young women, and girls, were and are expected to be the Barbie to every Ken. This needs to change.
Thank you ❤ women love men, we just want them to take care of us, not for our bodies, but for our well being ❤ and we love to take care of those men,I dont like to hate men, they are great ❤ but so are we ❤ men and women 🫱🏾🫲🏻
I have depression and can never enjoy things, I laughed, I cried, I missed my mom and I wish she could have seen this with me. She bought me, an only child, so many Barbies. I realized a woman can have her own life that wasn't attached to a man for survival. I grew up to be a meteorologist and have been married to my husband for 20 years. I can't see how anyone thinks it's a man hating movie. Thanks for sharing your story!
Moral of the movie: “No Barbie or Ken should be living in the shadows.” Agreed Madam President. And also agree with you on middle ground, balance. I didn’t expect to love this film or drop a few tears either. Great reaction!
“They’re just, you know, they‘re kenning. They’re kenning all over the place. They’re kenning all over each other. They’re kenning everywhere and they’re kenning so hard that they’re gonna ken themselves blind.” -Ryan Gosling (2023)
I watched Barbie three times. The first time I watched it, I walked out of there a changed person just thinking, ‘she’s right. Why am I forcing myself to live up to expectations of others and pleasing others? It’s *my* life’. The monologue stuck with me ever since. Everyone did such an amazing job on this film.
My favourite thing about this reaction may be how sincerely excited you were when you saw (and then purchased) the Kenough sweater 😂❤ Another wonderful video full of laughter and thoughtfulness. You are SO Kenough, Derek! lol
Ryan Gosling absolutely kills it as Ken, the highlight of this film. Hilarious with the perfectamountof "Kenergy" And "I'm just Ken" is seriously one of the best song of this year.
Lmao it was the most surface level, basic 101 starter feminism. It's not "deeper than feminism", it barely scratched the surface of feminism. But it succeeded at that, and there are still enough people who are totally mind blown by these basic feminist observations that it's a good first step I guess.
I don’t know how people are interpreting it as “man hating”. Ken became a villain but he also had a redemption arc in a very short period of time. Even the least nuanced observer should be able to pick up on the fact Ken is portrayed as a very sympathetic character. And Barbie admits she was wrong and apologized to him…it’s all pretty obvious. They just want to keep the feminism hate train chugging along.
@@baguettegott3409 No, it was barely starter feminism. It was a humanist movie. It was about what it means to be human, to feel emotion, and to balance the fear of death with the beauty of life and the complexity of experiencing deeper thoughts and negativity. The feminism was shallow because the feminism wasn't the point. That's why both Ken and Barbie experienced the exact same character arc - not feeling enough, not having a defined "meaning" to their life, and having deep insecurity relating to that. Stereotypical barbie doesn't have a role like doctor barbie or president barbie, which is why she's the main character. And Ken is only known as 'Barbie and Ken', so fits well with that too. That's why the scene with the old woman on the bench is so long. And that's why it ends with barbie seeing different people growing older at the end. It's about accepting that life comes with the good and the bad, but the beauty is that the good so often overwhelms the bad. And life becomes what you want to make it, because no one else gets to define what you do with it.
Yeah shout out to woman! I heard in an interview that they made the first Barbies like "Barbie astronaut" before woman even could have a bank account! I always thought about Barbie as just a comercial figure but there's more. And yes this movies are importante. I have a 4 year old sister and she was talking about football (she can't kick the ball properly) and she said "My brother can ... And I can't bc I'm a girl" and it just broke my heart 😭💔 of course I tried t explain to her that she can do whatever she wants and explain the real reason is that he's in football class and she's not ... But a 4yo girl already thinking she can't do something bc she's a girl just broke my heart
Yeah. I mean, 4yo don´t have THAT good of motoric control, so no suprise she can´t kick the ball well, she will get better, especially with practice. And who know, maybe she will one day be even better than her brother.
@@veronikamajerova4564 yeah, I just don't want her to think is justo bc she's a girl. But yeah, maybe one day she will be better than then brother. She's starting at a younger age so who knows
One of the things that stood out for me in your reaction is at the end where you ask "Why am I crying right now?" The audience has just been told "Now, FEEL!" Billie Eilish comes in and uses those simple lyrics to crack our hearts open like EGG 🥚 Excellent Cinema and it hit you the way it was designed. Patriarchy has conditioned men to repress their emotions so intensely they don't know how feel deaply. Welcome to the journey 🎉 There's going to be two kinds of Kens walking around at Halloween, the ones dressed as the Ken dressed as the random dude in the fur coat he saw coming out of the bank, and the ones with the hoodie. In this world of fur coat Kens, be a hoodie Ken, at least until you learn to be an Allan.
I love this movie, the cast performances, writing/directing, visual style and who "Barbie is." was amazing. Hands down to Greta Gerwig for giving us a spectacular movie during the summer.
I really loved it. The only ones offended by the film were the exact people the movie targets , other than that that the men with with a healthy mind/heart enjoyed it. Even though I enjoyed both versions of Justice League I laughed at the Snyder cut joke cause it made fun at the toxic side of the fandom not those with a sense of humor. Way deeper movie than expected. I really dig how you actually get the messages of these films.
Yeah, they did specify those who were really invested, rather than those who just wanted it. People who get offended are the ones who took it too seriously lol
This movie is so culturally important/relevant in a time when women’s rights are under attack. Every second of this film is intentional and the messaging is so layered all while being accessible, engaging and visually stunning. Greta is a genius and Margot is a gift.
Oh and don’t forget the RWNJs who freaked out that a trans woman was cast as one of the Barbies, and many of them didn’t even know which Barbie she played.
1:05:26 I don't think that Barbie treated Ken poorly deliberately (as he later did her and the other Barbies), it's that he simply wasn't the center of her existence or imagination and that's perfectly okay, which is _really_ difficult for some men to grasp. I think it's said in the movie that Gloria (America Ferrara's character) didn't even have a Ken doll, so her real world play experiences were likely reflected in her Barbie's Barbieland life.
I saw this in the theater and wanted to see it again immediately afterward! so amazing! I also cried during that last montage of women and girls just living their best lives; what a celebration of humanity right there. you know, rewatching this through your reaction reminded me of something. I'm not sure if you've seen The Good Place but there's a quote from that show that doesn't spoil anything but it's something along the lines of "Every human is a little bit sad all the time." and this is in reference to the fact that we all know we're gonna die someday and that's terrifying. I think that's what makes this movie so relatable, the whole existential crisis thing. we've all been there, ya know? also, I think Allan might be my favorite character. thanks for another great reaction Derek! ❤
I cried the whole film. Both from emotion and laughter. It’s now one of my favorite movies. Made me look at life a little differently as well! Kens song is just… perfect. Great reaction!
i was truly baffled when i saw people saying this movie was anti men since it literally isn't! the whole point of the movie is that barbieland only giving rights to the barbies was wrong!!! like how can you watch the whole thing and not understand that lol
Because those men are seeing it as men being attacked and they're taking it personally, when that's how the world works. They're getting offended by the world existing as it always has-under the patriarchy
Agreed. I honestly don't get where anyone is seeing any "man-hating" in the film either. Literally the "worst" examples of men in this movie were, like, maybe the cat-calling construction workers and the clueless CEO character (not counting villain!Ken). But even they were portrayed as somewhat likeable! The construction workers responding with "that's OK, yeah" when Barbie said that she and Ken don't have genitals was a delightful subversion of expectations, and it makes them endearing. And the CEO, of course, was played for comedy and came off as a somewhat harmless goof. There wasn't really anything saying that men as a whole were a problem. The problem was the imbalance of society and the pressure of expectations.
@@sparkymularkey6970Ken isn’t a villain and that’s the entire point. Should he have taken over? No. But he was acting out to show the Barbies how they were treating the Kens, which was horribly. If it makes him a villain then the Barbies are equally villainous.
@@NSnicket I never said Ken was a villain, so I can't tell if you're adding to what I am saying or if your comment is a rebuttal to a statement that I didn't make.
I'm calling it now. This will be nominated for several Academy Awards. Costume design, best original song (I'm just Ken) Best actress, best actor, best director etc
It's so great to see a movie where the guys can be just as camp as the women. That was a fun reaction man. It was really nice to see it strike such a chord with you. And always remember, you are Kenough.
Barbie is such a wonderful and thoughtful satire that’s so much more than what you’d imagine a movie about the iconic global phenomenon that is Barbie. Margot and Ryan kill it as (stereotypical) Barbie and (beach) Ken. America Ferrera is such a gem of an actress who needs to have her time to shine as a leading woman in film, but she does shine in a supporting capacity with the big moment that lays bare the complicated red and yellow tape of being a woman. Shrill insecure guys are always going to whine about stuff being “woke” or anti-man when they can’t find something truly constructive to criticize. These sort just don’t like the idea that their mirror is played for a joke. Barbie has made over a $1 billion. You should see Greta Gerwig’s other two films she’s directed, Lady Bird and Little Women.
seeing this in the theatre with my mother was such a special experience. the line ‘we mothers stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they've come’ made me sob.
Fun facc about this film: there was so much pink used for these sets that there was a GLOBAL SHORTAGE of pink. To quote the director herself "The world just ran out of pink"
4:29 It’s supposed to be like the Barbie accessories and house. No water comes out with the toy, so no water comes out in the movie. I hadn’t heard who was in the movie besides Margot and Ryan, so I was excited to see Ncuti!
This movie IS my movie of the year ! Barbie IS So much deep than expected ! And kudos to Margot Robbie ! She IS just perfect ! She was born to play Barbie
32:30 around here I couldn’t but notice that you had said “he’s kinda reversing everything she’s done to him at the beginning”. While yes he was kind of set to the side he kind of ruining her life. She still acknowledged him but she just wasn’t interested. He took her house instead of making his own. He went and objectified all of the Barbies brainwashed them. The kens from the beginning were just… there. Yes there needs to be a middle ground but comparing the two in is not plausible. I really loved your reaction and it really satisfied I just wanted to insert my two cents into this 😊
to be fair he did say kinda reversed? and technically barbie land gave him the role of being her boyfriend where he was. you right she just want that interested(and in her defense kids don;t know much about romance anyway) and she didn't force anything on him or anythink.... but she wasn't really including him actively much even as a friend while the expectation for him was still there to fill that role. and unlike barbie who could feel validated through all the accomplishments of the other barbies(until the daughter popped her bubble) de to how all the other barbies treated her like she had all the accomplishments to...all this ken had was beach where if he tried to expanded even a bit outward(like surfing) it went badly. and technically the kens didn't have houses at all where barbie didnt even know where they lived. which on one hand your right. the ken's bringing the patriachy was actively being more mean to the barbie's and putting them down and taking their stuff which is not the same as just not caring about the kens the way the barbies did where they at least said hi and included them in dance routine and validated him about beach after caring for him in the barbie hospital. so people who argue its karma or getting back at her is wrong because the barbies werent actively being mean to the kens and it really is too far to steal the stuff and the government.... but on the other hand Ken is literally an accesory in barbie land where the barbies don't really think about the ken's having feelings or about if the ken's have a place to live or not where his only other role aside from beach is boyfriend which she goes along with even if she doesn't actually care but doesnt even let him ply that role properly cuz she said it was girlsnight everynight imply she never wants to hand with him. and considering she was talking about how all kens are superfulous. honestly it made me think about how sometimes when kids are playing one will take charge and sometimes not include the other kid as much...like saying kens isnt allowed to play in the dream house and it just being treated as normal by the other kids playinf...then when in this case barbie stepped out...ken took the chance to play in the dreamhouse to make her understand how it hurt him not to be included. or honestly it made me think about how ladies deal with stuff in the real world..since while the kens definitly do have a parallel to men....they also have a VERY strong parallel to ladies as well since ladies where unable to own property, and had this expectation that no matter what they did it didnt matter unless they had a man. and in the real world not everyman was actively mean about ladies...but felt it was teh natural order and just never thought about it. and just...didn't think about how ladies might feel or want with their limited roles...it made me think about barbie thinking about how the kens were there but not really important and how the kens still had this bonus role of boyfriend...heck allen is suppoused to be ken's friend but no one cared about ken having friends so there arent allot of allens..limiting his role to barbie's boyfriend...much like how in the real world ladies sometimes got taught a bit to see other ladies as rivals. even more with how it made me think of how people assumed that ladies getting to go to the workplace and having potential to do other things or seeing they coudl have equsl rights would mean they would take thr ights from dudes away and how there IS a section of feminsim that tends to push down on guys and act like the girls are better...which infact stems from the unprocessed insecurity from those previous expectations still lingering and how we are trying to over compensate for it...much like how the kens still had that insecurity and over compensated but we could still see the orginal role still influencing them... when in realiy much like ken...ladies don't ACTUALLY want to put down guys or steal their roles. pointing to the flaw of people who imagine thats what ladies would want if they were in power..and that even the kens only learned the push down part due to the patriarchy. and how we could see ken chafing under beach but unable to articulate it since everyone was saying he was doing great at it just like how ladies trying to fullfill certain roles didnt really undestand that unsettling feelings...and how ken had that boyfriend role...but ladies who were told to fullfill that roll as well in reall life...had to clash with how alot of the time..despite being given this role by society which barbie(or men in ourcase) made the rules for....the barbies or guys didn't really play along by including us properly and showing care. hence the built up resentment and why ken lashed out trying to get he rto understand where he was hurt and why some ladies now tend to lash out as well trying to get the dudes to understand the issue. it makes me think of how barbieland could echo a bit of a more subtle version of something. that said though you are right that people tend to miss that the kens weren't really treated badly/actively pushed downand it more thoughtless on barbie's part while the patriarchy version where kens stole the government and the houses and stuff was more targeted.
@@clarisacalderon9555 Barbie wasn’t expecting anything from Ken. Ken was made to be her boyfriend, and both went along with it. But only Ken was interested in actual romance and Barbie was not. She wasn’t expecting him to fulfill any role, she just showed a complete lack of interest. And she might be completely aromantic. Just like I can feel sympathy for the guy in a relationship with a lack of reciprocation, cuz he is supposed to be in a relationship with her and he’s just fulfilling that role, I can sympathize with her being forced into a relationship she has no interest in (like a lot of women. There’s a LOT of demonization of women for not being romantically into men). Barbie never felt vicariously accomplished cus of the other Barbies. She just believed all Barbies helped women in the real world, that’s all. She admits she’s never done anything, she’s just there to help the little girl. She never needed to do anything else, so why would she need the other Barbies to make her feel better? Of course, when she meets the little girl she comes away with a realization that she personally hasn’t done anything to help. Like she calls her later “white savior Barbie” lol. One thing I do find interesting is that the Ken’s are treated second class cuz of their lack of financial success, as a result of boys (and also homophobia cuz they discontinued the only Ken toy to make bank….the gay earring Ken) not wanting them. The Kens are put down cuz they can’t appeal to little kids or adults. They’re not the vision of masculinity society upholds, so when the Kens attempt to fit into that mold to gain respect and power, they end up radicalized by patriarchal ideals. I like how it tackles women’s rights but also patriarchal standards and how they harm men and women equally.
I honestly felt the same way. I feel like I have seen a lot of women comment on that scene. As if he didn't take her house and brainwash her friends. It's very much not the same as barbie not reciprocating feelings (in my opinion)
Don’t read if you haven’t seen the movie 🚫⚠️: *Edit: the Kenough Sweater is for sale.* It was so cute seeing Rhea Pearlman as Ruth Handler. Seeing Ruth’s name being involved with this was pretty nice. May she Rest in Peace
the yearbook pictures we took two weeks ago just got published today. my class decided to do barbie as theme, pretty iconic seeing everyone dressed in pink
This was simply amazing. I Loved your reaction. I went to see this film four times in theaters, and I cried every single time. I’m so glad this film is receiving all the recognition it deserves💞
I’ve seen this movie a couple of times and I only just noticed that when girls discovered Barbie and Ken discovered patriarchy, they used the same music.
i cry easily over movies. but i’ve never cried more over a movie than i did with the barbie movie. i don’t know how to explain it, but the whole thing just felt so… familiar. like it was healing my inner child, and helping me accept that i’m not a kid anymore, and we have to face these things. like he said, “life’s a beautiful, scary thing”
I'm so excited to see someone who has seen sex education see this movie. I had to explain to my mom who Maeve Wiley, Eric Effiong, and Adam Groff were.
😂 i didnt even notice Eric when i 1st watch it until this guy mentioned it. They r perfect for the roles in sex education but also show how 1 dimensional they are.
I would just like to say that your reaction to this was everything I needed. I watched some guy's reaction to jurassic world earlier and it was so sexist, so seeing how emotional Barbie made you was beautiful and refreshing. A real man and beautiful person right here. Subscribed.
Incredible movie and I'm glad that more of us guys are watching it and being touched by it too. Fun fact, the real Ruth had a daughter named Barbara, as the movie said, but also a son named Kenneth. The original Barbie and Ken were brother and sister. Wonderful reaction my friend! I hope to see more soon!
I like watching your reactions! And I so wanted to give you a hug when you were tearing up. And yes, I would hang out with you if I lived there. You should have friends to hang with!
I don’t think any of us expected to cry watching this. I saw this twice in theaters- once with my parents and once with my sister, and they were two completely different experiences. This is probably the best reaction to Barbie I’ve seen so far, so thank you. And thank you for showing the montage at the end of the movie- you’re the first person I’ve seen that kept it in their reaction. 🩷 I’m not sure how I haven’t seen your channel before, but I’m glad I found it- I’m definitely subscribing after this vid is over.
I kept thinking youre scott cramer through this whole reaction lol. Not just looks but your whole vibe. I cried the most at the part where she was people watching at the park. And when she said shes not good enough for anything, anyone with depression knows that mood lol
I LOVED your comments on the portrayal of the Kens. I thought the gender roles being flipped was handled very cleverly. It's hard to balance something like that because it's easy to take it too far or fail to inject enough nuance. I find it bizarre that people think the Kens going a little overboard and becoming the oppressors was negative commentary _on men._ Am I the only one that interpreted that as commentary on how sometimes real-world feminism can get a little drunk on newfound power and the pendulum can occasionally swing too far in the other direction? That's how I took it anyway 🤷♀ Either way, the whole point of the story was that we need to find a balance, and they stayed true to that message in everything they did, showing that men and women are equally capable of both oppressive and altruistic behavior.
No, you misread that. "Pendulum swings too much in the opposite direction" is a tired and false talking point of reactionaries, it has never happened and never will. Not with any social liberation movement. No, women do not have the power to oppress men now, gay people don't have the power to oppress straight people, black people don't have the power to enslave white people - this is not a risk to be concerned about. It's just posturing to try and preserve the status quo, where women have far _less_ power than men. This movie was not a critique of "feminism going too far" in any part.
I'm bio female non binary and i really facepalm hard on some of these idiots ruining feminism with off putting stuff. Like talking about period discrimination is good but period blood "art" is stupid and irrelevant. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Being brave to call out predators is good but accusing someone of being predator is fking low. In mandarin there's a term called 猪队友。fits these idiots perfectly.
@@RonLarhz You sound like me when I was 13 and for some reason desperate for the approval of edgy internet strangers (and guys). You're gonna grow out of it. Art is a weird thing and I promise you, there are weirder things out there than art with period blood. But either way, I cannot express how irrelevant that is to feminism. Only youtube weirdos who make big videos complaining about this stuff pretend that it's somehow a relevant part of the feminist movement, and that because it's sorta gross, feminism is sorta dumb. The entire point is nonsense. Also, how can you be in favour of calling out predators, but against "accusations"? It's always an accusation, and you usually don't know for sure from the outside whether it's justified or not. But if you truly are against letting predators get away with it, you MUST be okay with accusations. You must take them seriously and be willing to look into the matter further and at least consider the possibility that she's saying the truth (which statistically is basically always the case). The key to realize here is that it's not the "dumb feminists ruining the movement with off-putting stuff". Literally every group of people, every movement of all times will have a small handful of weirdos who do off-putting stuff. What is going on here instead is that anti-feminists seek out people or things they think they can make look bad, present them in the worst light possible, and then act like these instances exemplify all of feminism and the entire movement needs to be held accountable. It's just a trick to make more people anti-feminists. Don't fall for it.
Ya know what though, some of the Ken's were pretty smart and could have been used in better positions like Scott Evans' Ken knew about finance so he could have run a bank, Simu's knew about Photoshop and aesthetics so he could have been a graphic designer, Kingsley BenAdirs seemed fair and smart and would have fit well in a judges position. Working then into more important positions, like women are (slowly) getting in the real world makes sense.
Fantastic reaction! You echoed many of my thoughts, but you articulated them much better than I did. I was an emotional mess after seeing this movie, and I love it for bringing out all the emotions. It has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. And I agree that Ryan Gosling should get an Oscar for this.
i love your review man. i completely relate with you and watching this really told me to screw it and be happy that i'm breathing and living. cool reaction!!
Barbie certainly brings up important life themes and questions. Derek: You might want to investigate some spiritual avenues which explore the concept of death. It brings comfort to consider that only our ego/body dies, while our larger soul identity continues. Just listen to a few RUclips Near Death Experience interviews for a different perspective.
I just discovered your channel and loved your reaction!! I can’t wait to delve further into your work. New subscriber my love. I completely agree with you about being shocked at how many people claimed that this movie was man hating. I didn’t get that in the slightest. But people get sucked into the angry mob mentality and walked into the theaters wanting to see hate so they could bash the film. Walking out of the cinema all I felt was warm laughter, glittery eye candy, pure pink joy and a catchy rock opera that I will never get out of my head. Thank you darling. Just never forget that you are Kenough!!❤️🤣🥹
Ok but on a serious note... I really feel like "Irrepressible thoughts of death Barbie" or "crippling shame Barbie" would HARD sell out within the first few days. Even if this movie were never made. That shit would sell. FAST. I absolutely loved this movie. It was self-aware in all the right ways, and it did it so well. Casting was fucking on point. PERFECT picks for the stereotypical "barbie and ken" look
I love your thoughtful and heartfelt reaction! I would totally watch more of your videos but I generally don't watch movies or shows... Barbie being an exception 😅
You might already know this (though I didn't see it in any other comments) but the videos that play at the very end when Barbie is essentially becoming human, were all provide by members of the cast and crew of the movie. They're videos of the women in their lives.
I went to see this expecting it to subvert my expectations due it being a Greta Gerwig movie. Despite that, I wasn't prepared for just how much it would do so. Honestly this movie deserves every plaudit bestowed on it. Both Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling knocked it out the park, as did America Ferrera. I also feel it handled all the potentially "touchy" conversations/subjects really well.
By the way, I was happy to see that the I Am Kenough hoodie was very popular at Comic Con last month. I don't think I'll ever again see so many guys wearing that in one place.😄
I was never allowed to have barbies as a kid and i dont like barbies because of how much they dont show normal things like stretch marks or cellulite because those things are all very normal but this show basically says "hey we see that people dont like this about it so lets make a movie that shows us trying to fix that" also a few of the cast of sex education is in here (Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindellas) (i apologize if i spelt any names wrong) also Emma Mackey and Margot Robbie look so similar when i was watching this for the first time i mixed them up alot. Also i will say. Seeing a gynecologist for the first time is scary and kinda earth shattering. Its why most people dont see them. Anyways i love that they included that in there. This whole movie. The ending scene with the creator of barbie made me cry sm. Like i was sobbing.

Lmao it was the most surface level, basic 101 starter feminism. It's not "deeper than feminism", it barely scratched the surface of feminism. But it succeeded at that, and there are still enough people who are totally mind blown by these basic feminist observations that it's a good first step I guess.
You described the movie the best.
One of the things that stood out for me in your reaction is at the end where you ask "Why am I crying right now?"
The audience has just been told
"Now, FEEL!"

There's going to be two kinds of Kens walking around at Halloween, the ones dressed as the Ken dressed as the random dude in the fur coat he saw coming out of the bank, and the ones with the hoodie.

@@ANME1rocker I agree that venn diagram is probably a circle lol
The good plus is so forking good, dude!
I believe all of that is from home videos of women related to people that worked on the movie
I love that Ryan Gosling not only NAILED Rob Thomas' singing accent and inflections, but recorded A FULL LENGTH COVER of the song.
I cried the whole film. Both from emotion and laughter. It’s now one of my favorite movies. Made me look at life a little differently as well! Kens song is just… perfect. Great reaction!
"Why is this making me emotional?"
"It's life"
That was the point, life is complicated, confused, but emotionally beautiful
i was truly baffled when i saw people saying this movie was anti men since it literally isn't! the whole point of the movie is that barbieland only giving rights to the barbies was wrong!!! like how can you watch the whole thing and not understand that lol

You should see Greta Gerwig’s other two films she’s directed, Lady Bird and Little Women.
ryan gosling really stole the show, i never doubted him for a second

seeing this in the theatre with my mother was such a special experience. the line ‘we mothers stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they've come’ made me sob.
Fun facc about this film: there was so much pink used for these sets that there was a GLOBAL SHORTAGE of pink. To quote the director herself "The world just ran out of pink"

I really loved your reaction and it really satisfied I just wanted to insert my two cents into this 😊
Sorry for the typos I’m half asleep lol
to be fair he did say kinda reversed? and technically barbie land gave him the role of being her boyfriend where he was. you right she just want that interested(and in her defense kids don;t know much about romance anyway) and she didn't force anything on him or anythink.... but she wasn't really including him actively much even as a friend while the expectation for him was still there to fill that role. and unlike barbie who could feel validated through all the accomplishments of the other barbies(until the daughter popped her bubble) de to how all the other barbies treated her like she had all the accomplishments to...all this ken had was beach where if he tried to expanded even a bit outward(like surfing) it went badly. and technically the kens didn't have houses at all where barbie didnt even know where they lived.
which on one hand your right. the ken's bringing the patriachy was actively being more mean to the barbie's and putting them down and taking their stuff which is not the same as just not caring about the kens the way the barbies did where they at least said hi and included them in dance routine and validated him about beach after caring for him in the barbie hospital. so people who argue its karma or getting back at her is wrong because the barbies werent actively being mean to the kens and it really is too far to steal the stuff and the government....
but on the other hand Ken is literally an accesory in barbie land where the barbies don't really think about the ken's having feelings or about if the ken's have a place to live or not where his only other role aside from beach is boyfriend which she goes along with even if she doesn't actually care but doesnt even let him ply that role properly cuz she said it was girlsnight everynight imply she never wants to hand with him.
and considering she was talking about how all kens are superfulous.
honestly it made me think about how sometimes when kids are playing one will take charge and sometimes not include the other kid as much...like saying kens isnt allowed to play in the dream house and it just being treated as normal by the other kids playinf...then when in this case barbie stepped out...ken took the chance to play in the dreamhouse to make her understand how it hurt him not to be included.
or honestly it made me think about how ladies deal with stuff in the real world..since while the kens definitly do have a parallel to men....they also have a VERY strong parallel to ladies as well since ladies where unable to own property, and had this expectation that no matter what they did it didnt matter unless they had a man. and in the real world not everyman was actively mean about ladies...but felt it was teh natural order and just never thought about it. and just...didn't think about how ladies might feel or want with their limited roles...it made me think about barbie thinking about how the kens were there but not really important and how the kens still had this bonus role of boyfriend...heck allen is suppoused to be ken's friend but no one cared about ken having friends so there arent allot of allens..limiting his role to barbie's boyfriend...much like how in the real world ladies sometimes got taught a bit to see other ladies as rivals.
even more with how it made me think of how people assumed that ladies getting to go to the workplace and having potential to do other things or seeing they coudl have equsl rights would mean they would take thr ights from dudes away and how there IS a section of feminsim that tends to push down on guys and act like the girls are better...which infact stems from the unprocessed insecurity from those previous expectations still lingering and how we are trying to over compensate for it...much like how the kens still had that insecurity and over compensated but we could still see the orginal role still influencing them...
when in realiy much like ken...ladies don't ACTUALLY want to put down guys or steal their roles. pointing to the flaw of people who imagine thats what ladies would want if they were in power..and that even the kens only learned the push down part due to the patriarchy.
and how we could see ken chafing under beach but unable to articulate it since everyone was saying he was doing great at it just like how ladies trying to fullfill certain roles didnt really undestand that unsettling feelings...and how ken had that boyfriend role...but ladies who were told to fullfill that roll as well in reall life...had to clash with how alot of the time..despite being given this role by society which barbie(or men in ourcase) made the rules for....the barbies or guys didn't really play along by including us properly and showing care. hence the built up resentment and why ken lashed out trying to get he rto understand where he was hurt and why some ladies now tend to lash out as well trying to get the dudes to understand the issue.
it makes me think of how barbieland could echo a bit of a more subtle version of something.
that said though you are right that people tend to miss that the kens weren't really treated badly/actively pushed downand it more thoughtless on barbie's part while the patriarchy version where kens stole the government and the houses and stuff was more targeted.
This truly is a masterpiece. I don’t care what anyone says.

That's how I took it anyway 🤷♀
Either way, the whole point of the story was that we need to find a balance, and they stayed true to that message in everything they did, showing that men and women are equally capable of both oppressive and altruistic behavior.
I thought the Ken's turned into red pill incels
I'm bio female non binary and i really facepalm hard on some of these idiots ruining feminism with off putting stuff. Like talking about period discrimination is good but period blood "art" is stupid and irrelevant. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Being brave to call out predators is good but accusing someone of being predator is fking low.
I sob every time the Billie song starts! Something so beautiful and resonant with the messaging. What it means to be a woman or just to be human.
Going to see this in theaters with my mother was...an experience. Suffice to say we both cried.

Actually the position of the Kens at the start of the movie is a representation of how women used to be some time ago, but you know, family friendly
