I personnaly don't entirely agree. The story is good but with many flows to me. Still very good though! As for gameplay, it's okay with indeed great "semi cinematic" Battles.
There are FE games that have "good" writing and gameplay at the same time. It's just none of them have great or better gameplay and writing at the same time.
I love path of radiance but most ppl would put it under weak gameplay cuz it's too easy, even on maniac. Although mechanically and map designnwise it's great. Definitely a good choice for that though.

I actually think 3H had pretty good gameplay with alot of new mechanics that pushed the series forward quite a bit. It didn't have the map design of say conquest but I don't think it actually gets enough credit for some of its other ideas. and hell, it actually had better map designs than engage overall. To go so backwards in the next entry shouldn't be tolerated at all, and I think the reception to engage will be heard. Because as you mentioned, IS is actually more self aware and receptive than people might give them credit for. Hopefully a geneology remake will instill in them some inspiration going forward on what the series is truly capable of. Because that game alongside thracia has great gameplay and story. one other thing is 6:25. im not gonna lie, Berwick Saga is a game thats literally full of this. but go off, ch10 conquest is a pretty amazing map.
Fates has the best replay value, the best soundtrack in my opinion, a stellar gameplay(mostly CQ) and great visuals The only genuine flaws in Fates for me are some of Revelation maps, Birthright being way too easy and having some shitty maps and the story.
