Hey kids! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller here. I've been so busy getting ready to move, plus laying down the bass on some big time gigs with Andy Timmons and Andy Wood, that i've not had ANY time AT ALL to work on what matters most: SHREDDING GUITAR!!!
I don't know about you guys, but if i don't practice my alternate picking consistently, i lose my powers FAST! It sucks. But i've found a series of simple picking exercises that always help me rehabilitate my picking hand and get back to rippin' in no time, and today, i'm gonna show you how i do it!
The key is speed bursts, not marathons of straight 16th notes! Its the best way to regain your speed while also minimizing tension and bad habits in both hands. It really works! Try it out for a couple days, and i guarantee you'll be picking at faster tempos while also being more relaxed than ever.
I'll be showing you the basic exercise followed by some picking variations, fingering changes, and even how you can practice this stuff using legato to strengthen your hammer on/pull off game!
Playing my Suhr Modern Satin into the Axe FX III.
    Thanks for watching!

Never been a day in my life I have not been able to really play (except broken fingers, vacations, etc). But yet I wake up everyday needing to play to make sure I can still do what I was doing the day before. Never been able to shake that feeling.

I don't know about you but after a significant time without playing guitar and then playing again, even when my technique got worse actually I find myself being more creative and I have a sense of freedom that translates in my improvisation and and writing.

It's funny how technics evolve , it's exactly the same thing for build up speed in running. People realised that training fast for longtime is painfull and not worth it , instead running slow pace and alternate with speed it's better. Well done uncle Ben you're a wise Guy with lot ofexperience ! 😁 And thanks a lot for your channel it's a gold mine

I generally play to a backing track and if I feel I need a fast part over it I will work out the fast part first then just hit the ground running and play it. I won't get it but I don't go slow at first to fast. If I make a mistake I repeat and concentrate more on that mistake the second time through till I have it. This takes time and lots of mistakes to start with but me challenging myself and driving my fingers forces them to move even if they didn't hit the target. They get closer and closer till I nail it.

I Like to practice the 3 note per string runs in the beast and the harlot by avenged sevenfold. Those licks sound furious and are really good if you want to practice 2 way pickslanting. I think synyster economy picks that but I prefer alternate picking.

watching this specifically bc I am getting sore in said drumstick area, had no idea you would formally address this specific area, so....double bonus, and many thanks again. I literally get like, panic-level, when any guitar playing associated pain creeps in and immediately try to back off and if possible, properly diagnose and course-correct --and these are great tools for doing just that. The thought of being completely grounded is effing terrifying. I have only ever had acute/stupid accidental non-guitar related upper extremity injuries and any time in a splint or cast is just depressing at best, but it's finite (I'm not counting any superficial fingertip/side of thumb shredding injuries which is more character building/earned). But the thought of a sidelining chronic thing like a neuropathy or sumthin' . As always, thanks Uncle Ben.

Yaaay ,its Uncle Ben! Man, my skillz have been struggling because I haven't seen any uploads by the great Uncle Ben lately, now I feel better.😁🤘 I've got a question though, I've been attempting playing guitar for a little over a year, and when I started, I couldn't do much of anything, though I've been around musicians and guitar players all my life. So I kinda knew the basics, but never put them to use until I was able to get started. So, I want to know, when you guys started, did one day you just all of a sudden start doing things that you never were able to do like a few days before, or able to move your fingers faster a dew days before, and then like overnight it seemed as if you broke through the wall of guitar skills, and entered like the first level of mastery? Idk, it just seems like overnight I've made a whole helluva lot of progress, I mean it was months and month, trying stuff, practicing, and then like bam! It's all thanks to Uncle Ben though, he's awesome! Thanks Unck

Practice songs to get used to playing. Learning chords and learning to switch chord shapes while strumming is different from just learning a song. Learning different strumming patterns is different from learning to play a song too.
Learn songs that are just simple pop songs. Can even be cheesy love songs, crappy pop songs that by some miracle implemented an acoustic rhythm guitar, or simple rock ballads.
Learn some easy Metallica riffs if you want to get into rhythm electric guitar. Enter Sandman, For whom the bell tolls, etc.
Eric Clapton songs are nice to learn as well.

Awesome instructions and videos. I've learned all the Opeth tutorials that you've made, and I can definitely tell that the way you teach 'em to play is the easiest way and also is the most righteous way to play those songs. I'm having a tutorial request if you may:
Pleeeeeaaaaasssssseee make a tutorial on Opeth's Hours of Wealth! I'm making this request cuz there isn't any legit tab or video out here to find that out, though the song seems not to be so hard to play. and also I've seen some footages of Mikael playing it live, and it seems he plays it kinda different...idk tbh! I'm lost without your help basically!
