    As far as we know, for an Elden Lord-like figure, 3 elements must be present :
    - An Outer God. The Greater Will in the case of Placidusax, Godfrey, Radagon and most of the game's endings.
    - A god, who is the vessel for the Elden Ring. The Dragon God, who fled, and Marika are examples of this, and Empyreans are said to be candidates for that position.
    - The Elden Lord, the consort of the Ring's vessel god. Placidusax, Gofrey, Radagon and some Tarnished players fill that position.
    Mohg wants the Formless Mother to be the Outer God ruling the Lands Between, with himself as the Lord of her Order.
    But he needs a vessel god. Problem, his mother is already serving the Greater Will, Ranni already has ditched her Empyrean flesh, and Malenia is linked to another Outer God. So that only leaves Miquella as an available Empyrean.

    • @elleofmusic
      @elleofmusic 2 года назад +81

      Agreed. But I think Mohg's fatal error was not realizing that Miquella, despite his desire to live outside the influence of Outer Gods, did in fact have a "patron deity" so to speak, in St Trina. Understandably, considering the descriptions for both are pretty identical, right down to their namesake flowers. It's easy enough to assume that St Trina is merely an alias of Miquella's, and to an extent that might even be true. It could be that St Trina is not actually an Outer God, but a more terrestrial one like Eiglay or the Ancestor Spirits, so Miquella was willing to work with her to grow the Haligtree (if you closely examine St Trina's torch, which says it "unnervingly" depicts an adult St Trina, the carving is of an androgynous beauty with billowing hair and a third eye on the forehead. We see no such eye on the figure in the Haligtree roots, but the billowing hair resembles St Trina's image more than the sleek braids we glimpse on Miquella) and St Trina's power of revealing someone's deepest secrets through their dreams was no doubt essential for Miquella's plans to have gone as far as they did. But the main clue for St Trina's claim on Miquella being the reason why Mohg had no luck in linking Miquella and the Formless Mother is the fact that Miquella's slumber has simply been too deep and impenetrable.

    What is interesting to me, lore wise, is there’s a reason for all the demigods and other main game bosses to be exactly where they are in the game when you find them. Margit is trying to prevent tarnished from gaining power, Godrick is being weird, grafting stuff in Stormveil, Godfrey’s old castle, Renalla is obsessed with her “children” and rebirthing them, Rykkard is completely insane with greed and eating stuff so he’s kinda stuck where he’s at, ironically underneath his Manor, Radahn’s mind is mostly gone from the Scarlet Rot, so he’s still on the battlefield he lost his sanity at, Morgott is Margit so again he’s at the foot of the Erdtree trying to off you before you can figure something out about getting inside the Erdtree, the Fire Giant is cursed by Marika to guard the flame, since the flame can’t be destroyed. Maliketh is guarding the Rune of Death, and Sir Gideon appears for you to warm up on him before you fight the *real* bosses after him (lmao) but no Sir Gideon figured something out about Marika, that she wants us to “continue to struggle”, Godfrey returns “to be granted audience once more”, he’s also Marika’s husband so yeah probably doesn’t want you offing his wife, and of course Marika/Radagon are by the end of the game literally an empty shell for the Elden Beast to act through. Until we kill them and then we fight the Elden Beast, an Envoy of the Greater will.

    I never put that Marika line about “make of thee what you will, but not become anything and die as a sacrifice” and Godwyn’s death together, but it makes me feel like the death of Godwin was specifically because he did not reject the greater will. He was a member of the golden lineage, and probably intended to continue it. And of course, of all of her sons and daughters, he is the only one to die. At the feet of someone rejecting the greater will, no doubt.
    It makes that line much more nefarious. Marika issued an opportunity or a threat. Godwyn chose wrong according to her, and he died for it. If he would not reject the Greater Will, she would reject him.

      I don't think so. It doesn't make sense for her to tell her children to "make of themselves as they will", then kill them if they do something she doesn't approve of.
      It's clear to me she's anticipating the Shattering war and declaring they will be forsaken if none of them make anything of themselves, i.e a stalemate. Considering she's the one who later extends grace to the Tarnished to lead them back to the Lands Between to kill the demigods and take their great runes, this is the sacrificial state she's likely condemning them to. It all points to her wanting someone, ANYONE to bring about reform to the Lands Between after she shatters the Elden Ring, and the demigods, failing to do that, being condemned to die at the hands if the Tarnished seeking to become Elden Lord.

    • @mattwebb563
      @mattwebb563 2 года назад +10

      @@Rusty_Spy it’s not the part of her telling them to make of themselves what they will, but rather part of the line where she says if they fail to do so, they will be become a sacrifice. And Godwyn became a sacrifice to the plan of Ranni, who made of herself what she willed. Which Marika likely assisted with. Maybe it was simply a prophecy, but that line sounds much more like a threat.
      Also reform is a nice way of putting it, as Marika is the one who caused much of the stagnation and issues of the world due to her removing the Rune of Death, and outliving her welcome. It is actually the Greater Will who attempted to reform the Golden Order, via electing new Empyreans who were to create a new order. From Ranni herself. Yes still under the thumb of the Greater Will, but what evidence is there that the Greater Will was the issue? Ranni seems to view the order that the greater will brought as a net positive, but that it needs to be removed from the world as that is what causes the negative. It seems the issue was Marika and her desire to not be supplanted.

Forsaken by the Greater Will for their transgressions. Marika knew that, but still she hoped for her children that they would brace the challenges that would follow with the inheritance of a Great Rune. Gotta disagree with the beginning, not every boss is at its weakest and some are stronger than ever.
    Godrick was the weakest of the demigods during the shattering but by the time we find him he has been grafting powerful warriors into him for a long time, AKA he looks ugly but is stronger than ever.
    Rykard finished his experiments and decided to be consumed by the Immortal Serpent, he looks ugly but is perhaps (very likely) stronger than ever.
    Malenia blooms for the third time and LITERALLY BECOMES A GOD, goddess of Rot to be precise.
    Mogh powered up by becoming a follower of the formless mother and gained the power of Bloodflame.
    IMO only Radahn and phase 1 fire giant fall under the “nerfed” category.
    But again, this is Fromsoft, we could always argue on technicalities. Dark Souls was way clearer on this theme of “lost greatness” (although again, some may feel otherwise with their head cannon or specific bosses) and I’m glad that Elden Ring allowed us to fight bosses that are by all means legendary and at their “arguably” best.
    I would say the boss that gave me this feeling of greatness by the enemy the most was Godfrey, he looks regal/legendary as he is meant to because Serosh nerfs him, and then he fights you at 100% as Hoarah Loux, not as honorable but by all means a powerful enemy that is giving it his all without any handicaps.

      And that’s when I got the following Head Cannon. The dexterity talisman tells the tale of Malenia’s Master, a blind sword saint (Ok sword-man but I’m adding flavor to the story) manage to defeat an Outer God of Rot long ago. Later on he took a student, Malenia. Later on in the game we receive the weapon of Malenia’s master as a treasure from a carriage in the land of snow and fog. The lore of this weapon let us know that the creator of Malenia’s Waterflow combo was in fact her master. Now comes the theory head cannon, after arriving to the Haligtree thanks to Finlay’s help, Malenia would have woken up to face his master, disappointed at her for being unable to resist the call of the Scarlet Rot (remember Milicent’s quest, apparently blooming is a dishonorable last resort of sorts, giving in to it may cause a loss of self if not something similar to becoming a puppet to an Outer God). This would have lead to a duel amongst the 2 in which Malenia would again have to bloom in order to win the fight. Please remember that during our fight against her she does in fact bloom again and can even use the bloom as a regular attack. We already saw the size of her Aeonia in fight so the size of the one outside shouldn’t be an issue.
      And we got to love Fromsoft. Being formulaic isn’t a bad thing by default. Becoming stronger meaning dishonored isn’t a new concept. Lady Maria in BB also became desperate when using her Vileblood heritage despite her preference of using only her skill. Lady Friede in DS3 doesn’t show her black flames powers most likely because of the shame of being a failure at attempting the Lord of Hollows ending. She is an Ashen therefore she did try to link the flame but failed. I’m sure in a head cannon and not Miyazaki item description kind of way that she feels shame on her failure and hides her true power. Emma in Sekiro didn’t learn the way of the Blade to kill people but solely to kill the Sculpture if he were to become a demon. On the Shura ending we are about to becoming something far worse than the Demon of Hatred and Emma sees the need of stopping us before we bring chaos to the land, despite being our former ally, a more tragic than dishonorable fight but I wanted to give her amazing fight a mention anyway.
      And now with ER we got Malenia giving herself to the Scarlet Rot completely and ascending to Godhood. Where Radahn and her Master failed we managed to rise above and win. And so we win against her, an Empyrean, not a mere demigod and a vessel for the power of the Rot Outer God. Fingers Crossed Miquella’s DLC boss fights lives up to the hype and continues this trend of Marika’s children finding their purpose outside the Golden Order by following the teachings of another being of great powers!

    About why mogh whant Miquella: we know, from a dialogue from melina with the words of Marika, that she (marika) said to the demigods to make something of themselves, be it a lord, be it a god, if they didn't, they would be forsaken and will die as a sacrifice (that's why the final words of morgoth is that in the end he was forsaken). Well, why she said to them be lords or gods, because only the empyreans could become gods, all others would become lords. The empyreans have the power to communicate/become hosts of the outer gods, like marika, and only them could make a new order (gowry say this). Since mogh is not an empyrean, he could not start an order, he would need and empyrean, that's where Miquella comes in. We see on the items about mogh that he wants to become a consort, a lord of blood, and he needs a god to be married with. The only empyrean left is Miquella, well, the only that would not nuke him to death. Miquella had so much trouble with outer gods that he created a golden unalloyed needle so the outer gods wouldn't influence him or malenia. So, thats why he goes after Miquella and that's why he is the lord of blood.

    It's always the case with these worlds, we're only seeing them during the long decline, long after these figures have been at their peak. But what we face in the game still gives you a good impression of their original power. I do feel that Malenia and Radahn were easily the strongest of all the demigods back then and even now (Radahn continues to hold the stars in the sky even in his degenerative state and Malenia remains a fearsome warrior and even ascends to partial Godhood, plus unlike the other demigods she's been hidden away sleeping so she didn't go to war or start other plans that would weaken her further), though I also feel that in his current state Rykard may be getting up there, if the serpent continued to devour other warriors and grow stronger and stronger.
    And as for Miquella, who knows? By the time he finally wakes up he could truly be the most fearsome Empyrean of them all.

    • @TheBacknblack92
      @TheBacknblack92 2 года назад +23

      Actually with the exception of radhan all the demigods we fight are at their highest power. It's usually the case in fromsoft games you're facing the enemies at their weakest but not this time. Rykard has his union with the serpent and consumption of thousands of warriors. Melania became a full God during our fight with her. He covered morgott and mohg being more powerful. Godrick gained considerable power through the grafting process after his defeat in the shattering. When we do eventually face miquella he will be at full power since he was slumbering in an attempt to reach godhood.
      There is nothing to suggest that they're weaker now than they were in the past. People are just assuming they are because that's how it was with darksouls and bloodborne. Their armies are weaker but that's because they fought against one another so much

Malenia already possessed the god of rot, but Miquella was still an empty vessel. The twins were aided by Ranni and realized the possibility of life that did not originate from Erdtree but from the Black Moon, the albinacules, and decided to give rise to a power parallel to that of the great will. There are several things that link these gods together, like Loretta and the Black Knives that protect the entrance to Halightree. For this plan to work, they had to kill Radahn, who held the stars, and Godwyn (I couldn't think of a reason), who represented the golden order, the sun god. I believe that Miquella should shelter the Black Moon because the other half of the medallion that leads to the sacred tree is in Sun Castle, where there are several references to an apocalyptic event that did not occur, named Eclipse, where Miquella's black moon would overcome the Sun. of the golden order, even the spirits that guard Godwyn's mausoleums are marked by this eclipsed Sun, and the Fia's rune of restoration is also an eclipse. While Malenia was trying to kill Radahn, Mogh invaded the Halightree and kidnapped Miquella with the intention of using him as a vessel for the Formless Mother, and, as the spirit atop the Sun Castle says, the Eclipse did not go as it should.

    Malenia was at her most powerful when she temporarily ascends into the Goddess of Rot state for the second time but will become even more powerful after the third bloom when she becomes a “true goddess” meaning that the state will become permanent.
    (I deduced this due to the description of Aeonian Butterflies - A butterfly with withered, scarlet wings found in the swamp of Aeonia.Material used for crafting items.According to myth, these butterflies were once the wings of the Goddess of Rot herself”, leading me to believe when she bloomed for the first time against Radahn in Caelid, she temporarily ascends to the Goddess of Rot state in Caelid before passing out and going to a deep slumber. We see these butterflies when she temporarily apotheosizes into the Goddess of Rot state a second time.)
    Also due to us returning the Unalloyed Gold Needle with Millicent’s dew - containing the essence of Malenia’s “sense of self” and dignity she will be sane when she wakes.

      Radan feats are actually less impressive than you think. Normally holding up stars would be impressive but key note here, he is only holding them up with a gravity spell and he doesn't actually have full control over them. Second normally, without context being able to control these stars would put him at multi star level which is 17 thousand times weaker than a solar sytem level fighter like cell( which extremely low balled cell. Going of android 16 stament of cell being able to wipe out the enitre unvirse and the fact cell scales to super sayain 2 goku and majin vegeta who are able to fight kid buu a multi galaxy level entity, this would mean cell is galaxy level to multi galaxy level. The only reason people say he's only solar system level is because he states he's going to destroy the solar system so that's a good low ball for him). However back to radan, that mutli star level is going off the assumption that radan is holding up and can control stars the size of the soon which we know he isn't. One of these so called stars crash after his death and we can see the elden ring stars are far smaller than planets. So this means radan high balled at best is multi planet level which puts him in line with nappa high balled and even saying raditz is low balled. Considering 10k is needed to destoy a large planet, raditz could destory a small planet like earth with relative ease and even not using the offical guide and just using the actual magna piccloo easily destroying the moon with a power level of 300 means raditz actually using his full power at 1200 could destory the earth. This means even if we high ball radan and say he could just use all the stars as nukes and theoretically blow up the planet, that puts him at raditz level. However that's just power speaking wise. Speed wise, well considering radan is so slow that having a horse boosts his movment speed, its only logical to assume light speed raditz is millions of times faster.

    Elemer of the Briar is most likely at Shaded Castle because it was once the house of Maleigh Marais, Shaded Castle Castellan. A "castellan" is a "governor of a castle" and Maleigh Marias is a descendent from a long line of executioners. (The Marias Mask item description states "The Marais family has a dual history spanning generations, serving as both executioners and castellans of the Shaded Castle") My theory is that when Elemer escaped execution; rather than face him in battle, Maleigh fled - which is why you can find him as a hostile NPC just outside the castle grounds.

    If ranni was as powerful as she’s implied to be she wouldn’t be relying on us to get everything done. • @donogoodatgames

      She is relying on us because she doesn't have a physical form to carry out any of the actions that we carry out for her. When the night of the black knives happened, she used the death rune to remove her physical form and Godwyns soul, so that she could still have influence over the world, even from the doll that she was using as a means to communicate with us.
      The issue with Blaidd is nothing to do with weakness, he was literally formed from the 2 fingers to protect Ranni and to make sure that she works for the Golden Order, so the fact he is even still in her service goes against everything that he was formed to be a part of. The fact that when he invades us, he is going insane because he is still defending Ranni in spite of his sole purpose of making sure she is working towards the goals of the 2 Fingers, shows that his weakness is nothing to do with his physical strengths and is entirely due to the fact that he is protecting her even though he knows it goes against everything he was created for.
      Also, we fought Radahn for her so that we could release the stars from his control, and then the stars would be allowed to take back the influence over the world that they had. Because the Carian Royal family have their fate tied to the stars, she could then wield the Fingerslayer Blade because it only works in the hands of somebody who has a fate in their lives.

    Extra: there isn't really any referance as far as I know to anyone who is the direct son of godwyn which is why I think godefroy is the son of godwyn, since he created the art of grafting and was imprisoned for it maybe he was wiped from the records like the nameless king was in ds3.

      Honestly try going in naked with RoB and summon your mimic. She becomes a joke.

    I think that when the game takes place, Ranni is the most powerful demigod by far.

      @@thediabolicalraisin8953 yeah man, I'm aware. It's intentional lol. And I'm playing without summons. She's the last boss in the game left, besides final, and I was one hit away last night... survived waterfowl, but was out of preserving boluses and died to rot. She's going down today

    Ranni was not the only one who plotted the night of black knives. The black knife assassins were commanded by Queen Marika herself.
    For another thing, Godrick is, as is told to us, only distantly related to Queen Marika. You can find another of Godwyn's descendants in an Evergaol on the Altus Plateau. His name is Godefroy, which is pronounced exactly like Godfrey. And his title is also 'the grafted'. It's basically Godrick phase 1 all over again. But yes all of Godwin's descendants save for Godrick are dead by the time we awaken.

    Think of Marika and Radagon like a alchemical creation called a rebis or the perfection of a creature where a man and woman are combined, as suggested through Marika's dialogue in one of her churches recalled by Melina "Radagon you are yet become me" or something along those lines suggesting they were once separate individuals and became one when Radagon wanted to mend the Elden Ring

    If you travel West from the impassible great bridge grace site you’ll come across one of those sword monuments.
    The big sword lore reads something along the lines of the reason Radahn held back the stars was to protect Sellia. I believe Sellia was where Radahn learned his gravity magic, and the lake of rot where he fought Melania to a standstill is just west of there.
    The monuments do not state what Radahn was protecting Sellia from…. so more questions.

      @@kevinfortsch you’re right, I misspoke. I refer to that lake as the lake of rot, but that’s the place I meant, and if you look at the map, it’s just west of Sellia.

    11:02 For me Formless also reminds me of Bloodborne, a game completely centered around blood. In that game, the overuse of blood turns you into a beast, the bullets you fire from your gun are crafted from your own blood, and an upgrade you can equip, called Formless Odeon, increases the amount of bullets you can carry. Formless Odeon and Formless Mother could be either one in the same, or related. Could Bloodborne possibly be the dynasty Mohg brings forth?
