  • May 19, 2019: The song, "Deep Purple," is a very old one, written and published by pianist Peter DeRose in 1933. Mitchell Parish added the lyrics in 1938. The first popular recording of the
song was by Larry Clinton and His Orchestra in December 1938 which went to #1 for nine consecutive weeks in 1939. It would not reach #1 again until recorded and released by the brother and sister singing duo, Nino Tempo and April Stevens (born Antonino and Carol Vincinette LoTempio in Niagara Falls, NY). Previously April Stevens was best known for her 1959 song, "Teach Me Tiger," often mistakenly credited to Marilyn Monroe. Released in September 1963, Tempo & Stevens' cover of "Deep Purple" was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 the
week before John F. Kennedy was assassinated. It was still a #1 hit on the rival chart, the Cash Box Top 100, on the day of the assassination.
I have read posts by people who are alarmed when they see purple skies or clouds at dusk or dawn. Some are even blaming Planet X, UFOs, and other supernatural events on the purple sky phenomenon: others blame the chemtrail conspiracy. Yet purple skies are nothing new. On the contrary, they are something old and natural. In truth, and I am old
enough to remember this even though I was a child, when this song was a hit and the many years before, purple, even deep purple, skies were quite the norm during and after
sunset or before sunrise. This song composed by DeRose and Parish was not based on some hallucination or fairy tale. It was a reality, every single morning and evening. I can
still recall the almost Easter coloring egg purple hue that was very normal to see between sunset and twilight and twilight and sunrise. Since at least the 1970's we have been deprived of this fabulous sight, now settling for a dark powder blue sky before the black of night holds sway. Sometimes we may see purple clouds, mixed with other colors at
sunset, but no longer do we see the clear sky transform into royal purple as the stars begin to wink and peep. There are parts of the world, however, where this is still normal
to see, even in the western part of the United States.
So, what happened to our beautiful spacious skies of purple and violet? The chemtrail conspiracists have it backwards: chemtrails (and pollution) do not cause purple skies, they obliterate them and leave us with a dark powder blue color instead. Light pollution is also a culprit; the same nemesis that makes it difficult to see stars above the third
magnitude unless you are way out in the country far from city lights. Fortunately, as I said, purple skies do make occasional appearances and are more common in some parts of
the US and in other parts of the world. And you can see them in this video.
You can also see another scene, in this case meticulously edited by yours truly, from Normal Life (1996), starring Ashley Judd and Luke Perry as they look up at the stars in the violet heavens searching for answers.
