The song has to be understood through an anthroplogy of music and its historical placement. In the early 1970s, throughout the 60s etc, the Vietnam war was ravaging, and by the end of the war, a significant portion of the world really wanted release from anything that was .... constraining. So, disco!! Disco was the craziest period where liberation from everything was the norm. Anyone visiting the paradise garage would have seen it all. The period was so intense, by the late 70s, the world needed a re release from the oppression of disco. Music then shifted massively away from dance, to an awkwardness, and I mean, triple time / compound time. Enter a period of laziness in dance, and a desire for home with a new rhythm that was both lazy and reminiscent of a period preior to disco. It was truly the death of disco but at the same time, the salvation of the disco goer. Jay Som's tenderness says this exactly. The tune is telling us that we regret the disco movement and society that appeard and arose through disco), and its time to rebuild (we've built the city that we're sinking in). However, social need for a re indoctrination into the night club and hence sexuality was not gone (and never has really), and a new disco was looming, one that combined rhythms of disco but that that bridged these with the home coming that the US so desired ... house. House was about a home coming and all of its elements were a bridge between there and home. At any rate, Jay Som's tune is beautiful in many many ways, one of which is its reminiscence of the pull of society away from the insanity of disco, and to a domesticated context. But it goes much further, and the above is just the beginning of what can become a book on Jay Som's masterpiece. The song begins with a whisper, by a woman who is contesting patriarchy and who should not be publicly disclosing her intentions as closely, as intimately, as she is, to her intimate partner. She's questioning the person, and addressing them directly. It's a very personal communication but made public. The solitude of early computer mediated rhythms, lazy syncopation, and very efeminized inflexions and lyrics, such as her admission of a new becoming, at least ideologically (I'm feeling like we've just begun ... tenderness is all I've got), and that this is a very personal perception. But yes, just the tip of the iceberg. Then there's the subservience of the chord progression system. Then there's her Filipino-American heritage which places her as a a minority group, and yet doing this work. THe multimodality of the visuals in the clip, and so forth. Which is why I voted the song my number one tune two years ago (annual vote). These songs are so transformative of the soul of the person, and of society at large. Just incredible Jay Som.
