How to Cast On in Knitting - Two Ways

  • Welcome to my very first knitting tutorial on this channel where today I shall be showing you how to cast on in two ways. The first cast on method is the best for getting you used to knitting and creates a neater finish, but I also show you a simpler method which can be your second option. It also great for looser projects.
I am so excited to get started in teaching you how to knit, starting at the very basics and moving on to more advanced stitches and projects as time goes on.
If you don't know me already, I am best known for my crochet tutorials and you can find my crochet channel here: / happyberrycrochet

I am a man of 80 bored rigid in lockdown, decided to make a scarf, figured I would be done by winter, followed some other videos but after knitting about 4 inches the result was a mess then found your tutorials pulled it apart and started again. Now well pleased with the progress I am making thanks to you. Awesome tutorials.

Thank you so much for making these videos. My mom tried to teach me to knit when I was a kid, but I lost interest before she could teach me to cast on and cast off. Now, she’s gone, but I decided to keep her knitting basket and see if I could figure out how to use her supplies. I think she’d be really happy to see me knitting.

you have to sit with someone and let them teach you and i swear once you get the knit stitch, everything else starts to make sense. i think of it like learning to eat with chop sticks. it seems so hard and like why can everyone else do this but me, but really one day you just suddenly can eat with chopsticks i am new to this but at first you need to get someone to cast on for you or else its pretty much impossible. then one day you will be able to cast on and then away you go!

THANK YOU!!! I am trying to pick up knitting again after a break of at least 40 years. I had 3 different learn-to-knit booklets--all showing a different way to cast on, none of which was the way a relative had shown me as a teenager. I've learned the method you showed and when you showed that easier way--I recognized it as the way my Cousin Margaret had shown me. I've learned the more advanced way, but it was nice to have confirmation that there was a easy way that I remembered from way back in the day. :-) Going to watch the knitting and purling videos today and am on my way to knitting again. I have subscribed and am truly appreciative. You are an excellent teacher.

Wow...I’m sure Your told this often, but you have an amazing talent. Not only your craft, but Your teaching method is simply wonderful. Knowing how to do something such as knitting is one thing, to give such clear and concise instructions is another thing completely! The demonstration was so engaging and easily followed in real time. I love how you taught the classic method first, then threw in a “cheat” just to be sure everyone could do it, but wanting people to try first the proper way. Your very patient and you definitely make me wanna keep learning. Thank you!

Great tutorial for beginners. My mom taught me to knit, but she had a difficult time because I am left handed. I do knit right handed but crochet left handed ( I taught myself - and it’s easier than knitting). My mom taught me a different way. Around the thumb and fore finger of the opposite hand and pick up stitches. Even though I can sort of knit intermediate level, I forgot how to cast on. Duh! I forgot the slip stitch and was able to finish casting on. I appreciate that you go slow enough to follow AND you give different options. BTW, you have a pleasant voice to listen to. Thanks so much.

I thought I knew how to knit. I self taught when I was 9 from an old knitting magazine. I wasn’t even going to watch this video because I thought I knew how to cast on. I’m glad I did watch it though because now I realise I taught myself all wrong! I always worked in the back loop and my knitting would always be so tight and twisted and I’d get frustrated and give up. I haven’t knitted for 15 years because of that but with your tutorials I think I’ll give it another go. Thank you for taking the time to make such excellent videos.

Thankyou so much!!! This was so easy to get the hang of! I'm easily confused by written directions (I'm very much a visual learner, so videos are super helpful so I can copy hand movements!) and had gotten frustrated with trying to follow written instructions and that's why I looked up how to cast on with knitting.
I was taught how to knit when I was 11 by my Nanna and all she had taught me was the basic knit stitch and was in the process of teaching me how to cast on & off as well as mend any dropped stitches, when she passed away shortly after my 13th birthday from cancer.
I haven't touched any knitting since, until today, almost 16 years later (I'm almost 29).
I must admit, I cried a little finally getting the hang of casting on, and doing my 1st row of knit stitch immediately got the urge to call my Nanna to tell her before realising I couldn't. ❤
Thankyou for helping me remember her. My first project is a lace stitch baby blanket & I'm so excited to continue on my knitting (and eventually adding crocheting to the mix) journey ❤️

I've watched many videos on how to cast on and they've gone way to fast or they don't identify where the tail should be or what side to put the needle through, or they keep unraveling and they don't crack on with the video... it's the small details and the moderate pace that are so helpful. You did that, you made it practical, simple, but still fun! Thank you for zooming in, as well. I needed to see it zoomed in and to see where the pieces of yarn needed to be. I had it in an awkward position before, but after this video I am so comfortable and confident!!!💛

I actually found this one of the easier cast on methods. I've decided to take up knitting and have been watching hundreds of videos. I've tried a lot of cast on methods and this one is the easiest so far. I always have trouble with either making the cast on too loose or too tight. ANd keeping all the stitches the same size. It looks so easy when I see other people do it, but it is a lot harder than it looks. I'm not giving up, though, I really want to do ithis. Maybe this time next year I'll be knitting my christmas gifts for my family.

Hi Laura! Well you did it yayyyyy! Your video finally taught me how to knit. I’ve been trying for years but giving up because I just couldn’t grasp the two needle thing 😂. I crochet and dabble in Tunisian but I’ve had a hunger to knit. I followed your cast on video (will need that for a while) then did the knit stitch and made a pretty even tensioned square. So of course I’m an expert now 😂…not. I am going to now try the purl stitch. I think it was learning how to Tunisian which finally helped me grasp the tension and some of the vocabulary. So excited. Thank you 😊

thank you so much for showing this way to cast on. I have a hard time with the other type of casting on with making sure I have enough yarn. I end up with not enough of a tail or way too much left after casting on the amount that I need. so thank you so much. plan on watching all of your videos.
