How to Cast On in Knitting - Two Ways

- Welcome to my very first knitting tutorial on this channel where today I shall be showing you how to cast on in two ways. The first cast on method is the best for getting you used to knitting and creates a neater finish, but I also show you a simpler method which can be your second option. It also great for looser projects.
I am so excited to get started in teaching you how to knit, starting at the very basics and moving on to more advanced stitches and projects as time goes on.
If you don't know me already, I am best known for my crochet tutorials and you can find my crochet channel here: / happyberrycrochet Хобби
I am a man of 80 bored rigid in lockdown, decided to make a scarf, figured I would be done by winter, followed some other videos but after knitting about 4 inches the result was a mess then found your tutorials pulled it apart and started again. Now well pleased with the progress I am making thanks to you. Awesome tutorials.
Ready for step2
I love u
The first way definitely gives a better consistency in knitting
Thank you for your help casting on and off. Very helpful for those of us who are occasional knitters.
70's here and used the pandemic to watch you tube videos; I learned how to solve the Rubik's cube!
This is the best cast-on tutorial on RUclips. I don't need music and fancy swipe transitions, I need clear instructions and repetition. THANK YOU!
Totally agree!!
And nice n slow too !
Knitted decades ago when my children were little and forgot how to cast on 😊. You’re a great teacher.
Really easy video to follow. Thank you!!! Spent an hour with my grandmother today and she taught me how to get started simply (knitting pro of 80 years lol)... then went home and messed it all up and had to start again and finally found this video that showed the same way she showed me. 👍❤️
Knitting rocks since I found this lady and does help get through lockdown 😎 stay safe everyone 👍🙂❤️🌸
Right!!
👍👍♥️😽
I was relearning how to knit. This video helped me remember really quickly bc of how slowed down it is. This is amazing for beginners AND people trying to get their muscle memory to remember
Ikr
Thank you so much for making these videos. My mom tried to teach me to knit when I was a kid, but I lost interest before she could teach me to cast on and cast off. Now, she’s gone, but I decided to keep her knitting basket and see if I could figure out how to use her supplies. I think she’d be really happy to see me knitting.
I LOVE this. The 2nd way to cast on is my fave and so much less awkward from the one I was taught. Thanks.
I watch every knitting video in the world and still can't knit....I watch your tutorial .....and I'm knitting everything.........how? 😂😂 lol ur amazing 😂😂😂
Oh wow thank you so much!! I'm so happy to help you with your knitting journey (^-^)
I agree!!
I double that :))))
hah
you have to sit with someone and let them teach you and i swear once you get the knit stitch, everything else starts to make sense. i think of it like learning to eat with chop sticks. it seems so hard and like why can everyone else do this but me, but really one day you just suddenly can eat with chopsticks i am new to this but at first you need to get someone to cast on for you or else its pretty much impossible. then one day you will be able to cast on and then away you go!
i’ve searched the whole internet looking for a good video for beginners. most videos were so frustrating and hard that i almost gave up knitting. but i must say your videos have taught me so much then any other videos. i’m glad i stumbled upon it. you’re doing great..thanks a lot ❤️❤️❤️
Excellent tutorial! I just started to knit and this tutorial helped a lot. Your instructions are very clear.
Thank you for making this video, I love casting on this way. It makes starting to knit so much easier. I am a crocheter but I am starting to like knitting more and more.
quarantine has brought out the grandma in me
Lol
Eh?
Lol lol lol
Lol! Me too knitting blanket for cat charities ♥️♥️👍👍😽😽
im 11 and i crochet and knit 😳
You are such a good teacher!!
Im finally getting to grips with my project, using your videos has helped me out so much .keep doing what you do.Thanks Ive learned so much from you .Stay awesome x
This is the 6th cast-on tutorial I've watched and the only one that actually made it click for me. Thanks!
your videos allowed me to knit a scarf for my grandma with cancer, thanks 😊❤💖
THANK YOU!!! I am trying to pick up knitting again after a break of at least 40 years. I had 3 different learn-to-knit booklets--all showing a different way to cast on, none of which was the way a relative had shown me as a teenager. I've learned the method you showed and when you showed that easier way--I recognized it as the way my Cousin Margaret had shown me. I've learned the more advanced way, but it was nice to have confirmation that there was a easy way that I remembered from way back in the day. :-) Going to watch the knitting and purling videos today and am on my way to knitting again. I have subscribed and am truly appreciative. You are an excellent teacher.
I'm knitting squares ,knit together cats blanket👍♥️😽🐾
I was so happy to see you doing knitting tutorials! You taught me how to crochet.
Finally! I have learnt to knit! Been frustrating me for ages as I can crochet really well, but could not knit!! Your video's are brilliant! I actually understand what I am trying to do now and am on my way to knitting confidently. Thank you so much!
Wow...I’m sure Your told this often, but you have an amazing talent. Not only your craft, but Your teaching method is simply wonderful. Knowing how to do something such as knitting is one thing, to give such clear and concise instructions is another thing completely! The demonstration was so engaging and easily followed in real time. I love how you taught the classic method first, then threw in a “cheat” just to be sure everyone could do it, but wanting people to try first the proper way. Your very patient and you definitely make me wanna keep learning. Thank you!
Brilliant tutorial. Not only is it super clear, it’s inspirational. I feel really encouraged to have a bash!!!
Great tutorial for beginners. My mom taught me to knit, but she had a difficult time because I am left handed. I do knit right handed but crochet left handed ( I taught myself - and it’s easier than knitting). My mom taught me a different way. Around the thumb and fore finger of the opposite hand and pick up stitches. Even though I can sort of knit intermediate level, I forgot how to cast on. Duh! I forgot the slip stitch and was able to finish casting on. I appreciate that you go slow enough to follow AND you give different options. BTW, you have a pleasant voice to listen to. Thanks so much.
had to remind myself how to cast on lol, doing a really cool hooded shawl and legit forgot how to cast on. thank you so much for this video
Me too haven't knit for 30 years my mind went totally blank I knitted for my daughter in 1985 now for my youngest sons son 💙
0:53 slip knot
3:00 cast on type 1
10:52 cast on type 2
Many thanks! Just semi retired, wanting to get crafting again, sat down with my needles, and yarn and thought ‘crumbs, what do I do now!’ 😂, brilliant tutorial, thank you!
my grandma taught me how to knit ages ago, and i still remember how to knit but i never learnt how to cast on but this video was very helpful im going to make some simple hand warmers :D
update Ive finished the first one :D
I just did my first knitted cast on ever!!! Thank you Laura!!! I did it. I am smiling and soooooooo happy!!! I can't wait to learn a stitch now. My 14" needle is full of cast on stitches (5mm) and Red Heart SS yarn and 120 sts.
Wonderful!
I am so glad that you have a few beginner friendly videos ! Now maybe I can catch onto knitting.
I already watch your crochet tutorials and picked up a little of the Tunisian crochet as well 😁 Thank you so much Laura !!
i was interested but had absolutely no idea whatsoever how to even start knitting. tutorials here helped me immensely.
This was perfect! She went at a slow enough pace, and showed the technique very close up so you can follow very easily and successfully!
I thought I knew how to knit. I self taught when I was 9 from an old knitting magazine. I wasn’t even going to watch this video because I thought I knew how to cast on. I’m glad I did watch it though because now I realise I taught myself all wrong! I always worked in the back loop and my knitting would always be so tight and twisted and I’d get frustrated and give up. I haven’t knitted for 15 years because of that but with your tutorials I think I’ll give it another go. Thank you for taking the time to make such excellent videos.
👏Yeah👏. Thank you Happy Berry🤗👏. I did it👏👏👏. For the first time in years I’ve been trying to cast on the very fist cast but had no luck, but the way you explained how to do the first one was SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND that I cast it🎉🙌🎉I did it👏😁🙌!!! Thank you🎉!!!
This video was super helpful! I went from being unable to cast on to managing to do both methods! Super beginner friendly, thank you for making this video
Thank you!! I only knew the 2nd method and my edges were always loose. It didn't work well with ribbing at all. I can understand and follow your demonstrations!!! What a relief! Now I know where to go to for help. You're amazing!!!
Hello beautiful how are you doing, and how’s everyone over there ?
I just found your channel. You're such an amazing talented teacher. I've given up of knitting until I found your channel. Thanks so much, may your effort b rewarded.
Thank you !! I wanted to learn knitting and after watching other tutorials found yours!! Amazing thank you for clear instructions. I am so happy with my progress😃
This was so helpful! I’ve just started knitting again and you made it so easy. Thank you!
This was the third knitting video I attempted on how to cast on. I've finally managed it. So thank you thank you thank you (x 100)! This was ridiculously easy (compared to the others).
Thank you so much for the clear instructions. I've always been confused about how to start knitting and have finally managed to cast on successfully!
Best vidéo I’ve seen by far. Starting from scratch and I must say this is a true beginners video. It’s one thing to know how to knit but an entirely different thing to know hot to teach it. Thank you for the slow speed, clear explanation and repetition. Truly thank you.
Watched so many videos but I failed to understand it until I actually watched this video.
I just started learning how to knit and this was the easiest tutorial.
This is THE BEST cast-on tutorial🎉👏🎉🙌🤗
OMG the first method you teach is awesome im a beginning knitter but expert crocheter & this was soooo simple to follow i was about to give up until i found your video ty ty ty
Same here🙂😉
Thank you so much for these videos, I am recovering from a major operation, and have started knitting again! My Grannies taught me when I was little, but that was a long time ago, it's all coming back to me now!
Great video thanks. It was so easy for my granddaughter to understand. She can knit with me now. Great tutorial
Thank you so much I absolutely could not grasp "bring it under" no matter how many times I watched other videos until I saw this.
Glad it helped!
I was having such a hard time figuring out how to cast on until I watched your video. It still makes my fingers super uncomfortable but I can definitely move through the motions much quicker! Thanks for saving me from quitting! 🙌🏽🎉🎊🙏🏽
wow this video is incredibly useful I was struggling before with other videos but as soon as I watch the first move i just understood everything.
Thank you for this video. I've been wanting to learn knitting and the other videos I tried watching did not seem to take into account an absolute beginner. I need to see something several times to get it and this is great.
Thank you from a crocheter learning to knit! This was the best I've found on RUclips. You patient little pixie. 😍
Always had trouble with casting on instructions. Until...... one day......I found you. Thank you so much. Nice and slow with all the repetitions. Loved it, so easy to follow.
I am coming here after trying several others. This lady is fantastic.
Hello pretty how are you doing with your family?
This made it SO easy! I'm shocked! Thank you!
Thankyou so much!!! This was so easy to get the hang of! I'm easily confused by written directions (I'm very much a visual learner, so videos are super helpful so I can copy hand movements!) and had gotten frustrated with trying to follow written instructions and that's why I looked up how to cast on with knitting.
I was taught how to knit when I was 11 by my Nanna and all she had taught me was the basic knit stitch and was in the process of teaching me how to cast on & off as well as mend any dropped stitches, when she passed away shortly after my 13th birthday from cancer.
I haven't touched any knitting since, until today, almost 16 years later (I'm almost 29).
I must admit, I cried a little finally getting the hang of casting on, and doing my 1st row of knit stitch immediately got the urge to call my Nanna to tell her before realising I couldn't. ❤
Thankyou for helping me remember her. My first project is a lace stitch baby blanket & I'm so excited to continue on my knitting (and eventually adding crocheting to the mix) journey ❤️
Hi! I’ve been crocheting for years but never thought I could knit. I was given some knitting needles, so I decided to try. I used your videos after trying a few others. Your instructions are really clear and I figured it out!! Thank you! It’s day 3 and I have started a scarf. Thank you for your help!
Hello pretty how are you doing?
This video was so easy to follow and I was casting on in no time. Thanks so much!
I have found these tutorials very helpful and I’m enjoying my knitting. Thank you
Perfect! A crocheter learning knitting from a crocheter. You’re the best.
I've watched many videos on how to cast on and they've gone way to fast or they don't identify where the tail should be or what side to put the needle through, or they keep unraveling and they don't crack on with the video... it's the small details and the moderate pace that are so helpful. You did that, you made it practical, simple, but still fun! Thank you for zooming in, as well. I needed to see it zoomed in and to see where the pieces of yarn needed to be. I had it in an awkward position before, but after this video I am so comfortable and confident!!!💛
That's wonderful!
Thank you so much. I could not figure how to cast on until I came across your video. I looked at 3 or 4 other vids, I cast on only one other time but forgot. Thank you. Again
Hello Shery how are you ?
Finally a good video! Thank you it's very helpful!
You are so very clear in your instructions on this video. I’m taking a class an found I understand you much better than the instructor. Thanks so much, I might stick with this. ❤️
Hello beautiful how are you doing, hope you are doing well with your family?
FINALLY! I'll be able to do this. THANK YOU!
You're such an amazing teacher Laura!
Aww thank you so much!
Out of all the knitting tutorial yours techinques was simple to handle and very happy to learn through your videos ☺️👍
Oh my Gracious!!! Thank God and Goodness for women, such as yourself! I simply had NO IDEA casting on could be so simple! I cannot wait. for my next tutorial with YOU😀
Thank you so much! All the other tutorials are so hard and this one is just right! So thanks again. 🙂
Oh thank you! I have been knitting a very long time but was taught a casting on technique that was not really satisfying. Love your method!
Thank you so much for the tutorial.ive tried watching a lot of them, but this one was very helpful and with it, I'm actually able to knit. Thank you, God bless you 😊
I asked a friend who doex grest knitting to teach me so i csn.make some scratch cloths. She is great, but your videos are much more clear. You are an excellent teacher. Thanks for sharing.
Wow that's a very kind comment, thank you so much, I'm glad ☺️🙏
I took my first ever knitting class and when I got home I dropped a stitch so in frustration I ripped my practice piece out. Then I could not remember how to Cast On! I tried may videos but YOURS was the only one I could follow! I am back at it with your help rather than crying about it in frustration (I was close) and quitting! Thank you!
A very wonderful explanation, my beloved friend. I am proud of you
You are wonderful ❤! I love the way you explain things. I can actually understand and follow and learn. Thank you so much‼️
Absolutely awesome!! My mum tried to teach me could not get it...watched your videos snap I'm knitting 💜 thank you!!! Socks ahoy!!
I actually found this one of the easier cast on methods. I've decided to take up knitting and have been watching hundreds of videos. I've tried a lot of cast on methods and this one is the easiest so far. I always have trouble with either making the cast on too loose or too tight. ANd keeping all the stitches the same size. It looks so easy when I see other people do it, but it is a lot harder than it looks. I'm not giving up, though, I really want to do ithis. Maybe this time next year I'll be knitting my christmas gifts for my family.
Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial! I am a beginner knitter and have been using the tail-on cast-on method. This became very difficult when working with my circular needles to cast on 192 stitches. You are a good teacher.
Hello how are you ?
i thought i was actually incapable of absorbing information bc i was trying to learn knitting from an Am*ric*n. couldnt do it for weeks. today i find my (your) english tutorial and i get it straight away. this is why i look for uk recipes, thank you for saving me xxxxx
Thank you! Your methods are great for people who have had a stroke or issue with a hand. It's almost impossible to do a long tail cast on with basically 1 hand:-) Thank you much!!!
Thank you for your kind feedback Karen :D
Who’s here because they’re bored as hell in quarantine
I feel you.
Haha
Meeeeeeeeee
Yes
Great time to learn a new skill! :)
Oh my gosh, you make it so much easier to understand. Thank you.
I finally understand. You are so great. I'm so happy. Thank you so very much. Every other video confused me, then I find yours, and I suddenly can actually cast on. And that's so exciting! thank you!
Hi Laura! Well you did it yayyyyy! Your video finally taught me how to knit. I’ve been trying for years but giving up because I just couldn’t grasp the two needle thing 😂. I crochet and dabble in Tunisian but I’ve had a hunger to knit. I followed your cast on video (will need that for a while) then did the knit stitch and made a pretty even tensioned square. So of course I’m an expert now 😂…not. I am going to now try the purl stitch. I think it was learning how to Tunisian which finally helped me grasp the tension and some of the vocabulary. So excited. Thank you 😊
I love your way of making the slip knot! V kool.
I have such a short attention span and find it SO hard to follow tutorials. I know now to knit, but never knew how to cast on. This was so helpful, thank you!
Omgosh finally someone that taught me how to do this!
You should be happy to know.. Years later this video is still helping people.. THANK YOU!!
That's awesome!
Thank you so much I have tried so many videos to try and learn this but I nacre have been able to and I finally got it xx
Great video! Very easy to follow for a new knitter! Thanks very much for sharing your expertise!
Best cast on tutorial 🥰 thank you. I was about to throw my needles before I found you!!! 😜
thank you so much for showing this way to cast on. I have a hard time with the other type of casting on with making sure I have enough yarn. I end up with not enough of a tail or way too much left after casting on the amount that I need. so thank you so much. plan on watching all of your videos.
Following your very well explained video and your lovely soothing voice I have been able to do a beautiful scarf...my first knitting work!!! I am very proud!!!
the first one helped me start my first ever project thanks so much :D
I watched so many vids but urs was the only one I understood, thank you
Thank you I’ve been looking for someone that makes sense
Absolutely loved the 2nd method. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I got a knitting kit for my birthday not knowing how to knit and this helped so much.
Oh my god I love this video it helps so much and I totally recommend it for beginners!!
This video was super helpful. I will always come back to it for reference
Brilliant! Clear and super easy to follow! Thanks
