Whoever chose these women for this performance understood the assignment! Kelly, being very soulful and tamed. Then Marsha gave me Arabian nights with those runs and note slips. Jilly from PHILLY gave footpath cafe jazz LEGEND, and Ledisi closed it DOWN giving powerhouse straight outta the French Quarters of Louisiana #IconicPerformance
Kelly set the tone and knocked it out the park, Marsha took it to second base and killed it, Jill had me hooked, and put her soul in it and took me to third. And Ledisi soulfully took it home and shut it down‼️💯 these the avengers 💯
This should have been uploaded ages ago. It was Game-Changing. I know people go in for for Ledisi’s performance and that’s understandable….but watch Jill Scott, the storytelling of her facial expressions and the subtle sultry nature of her voice…u can’t tell me she aint Sweet Thang. Incredible
Yes, she was the only one that sung and brought her part to life as a character! Great job to all of them ! For me it was Jill , Kelly, Ledisi then Marsha .
Saw Nina Simone perform this ...LIVE... when I was a little girl!!! It was life changing... My dad was her drummer that evening..PEACE and LOVE This was amazing
Each voice was perfect for the character they were portraying and gave the right amount of drama for the lines they had and the story they were telling. Marsha's voice is unique and it absolutely fit IMO - Everyone singing in the same style would be boring and defeat the purpose.
I have all these women story in my lineage from both paternal and maternal parents. Sarah and Saphronia are my great grandmothers. Actually got to be with my Saphronia for twelve years of my life.
@@American_Boy It puts the image in my mind of a warrior who won a battle against a master slave owner. An image of her standing with a strong wooden slave cane in her hand held to the sky in triumph and victory

The textures of this song are amazing. Kelly with the soul, Marsha with the yodeling and runs, Jill with the silky smooth notes and Ledisi with the grit and power!! Beautiful absolutely perfect!
Anyone that understand vocal techniques…. And the abilities and amazing skill set of Ms. Marsha would know that the shaking you hear was intentional, pretty, and controlled.

I haven’t gotten this performance out of my head since the first time it premiered. Everyone did absolutely amazing with narrating their stories, but Ledisi blew me away. Her closing line (“my name is Peaches”) had such a chilling and triumphant tone to it. It’s almost as if, through Peaches’ anger, she redeemed each of the women and their stories. It’s like she was determined to not be consumed by the labels/stereotypes they put on her. Ledisi brought Peaches to life.
Everyone did a great job, but Ledisi's physical performance was SO GOOD. I felt that look and delivery when she said "Because my parents were slaves" and that expression on her final note!
This is no doubt the best BGR performance ever! The combination of voices, the storytelling. No one outshining one another. Everyone having their own style. You were both entertained as well as educated on the lineage of black women who’s backs we stand on. Shout out to Black Girls Rock, Kelly, Marsha, Jill, Ledisi And NINA SIMONE!!!!
Ledisi in a word: EFFORTLESS!! Her talent, gosh! She sung that last note as if she was speaking regularly. Chillz! Jill Scout, like no other!! Shouts out to all these beautiful Sisters!
I recently saw Ledisi on the Black Girls Rock 15th anniversary show and she said that this performance was the game changer for her. .. this is the performance that MADE her. She shined! But so did all of the unmatched singers on that piece.
Have this in my playlist! As every woman represented is relatable to some sort of degree. We’ve come from lineage of humble Aunt Sara’s who did what she had to survive and raise her children and the Masters too. We have the Saffronia’s who were caught between 2 worlds..loved, privileged and adored and hated at the same time. Sweet Things learned or taught to hustle and use their bodies because the black woman has always been hyper sexualized since slavery, molested by men in the family or men of the cloth, raped by the Master, and forced to be breeders. Peaches is the rebel who at some point takes a stand and no longer want to be victimized. Peaches is dangerous and can help lead a revolution! We are all these women to some degree! Nina did the hell out of this song!!
I would have LOST it if I were in the audience live watching this for the first time! I have waited years for this to be properly uploaded. Thank you for finally uploading properly and making this performance so accessible to the masses❤️
I remember watching this performance live! When I tell you they all did their thang, however Ledisi’s performance brought forth a feeling and emotion unlike no other! It truly was her night to shine and she did just that!
This is simply a perfect performance. The camera work, lighting, creative concept, music arrangement and of course the talent. I’ve never forgotten it since I watched it the first time when it aired.
This is an excellent performance. I'd also recommend any with Dianne Reeves, and, of course, any recording of Nina Simone performing it. It's arguably her masterpiece - elegantly simple construction and powerful feeling.
That vibrato from Marsha Ambrosius on the third "What do they call me? (4:04) gives me chills every time (as did this entire performance). It's so fitting to refer to a singer's voice as an instrument...IMO, Marsha's was a violin, Kelly's a piano, Jill's a saxophone, and Ledisi's a trumpet.
This was one powerful ass performance beginning to end. I'm a fan of all these ladies. Kelly delivers of course, Jill brings all her sentry, amazing vocal skills and Ledisi killed it if course with her ridiculous vocal range & attitude (my brother worked at the Paradise Theatre at the time where this took place & said this was the 2nd take cuz the audience went too crazy 4 tv after her) but Marsha. Marsha's voice is unmatched with her vocal ability while she yodels. I can go on & on but I'll just say her albums can be listened to all the way thru & to see her live is a treat.
The first time I'm seeing this...made me cry, so powerful.... everything was perfect, bravo to these amazing artists, song writer, stage producer, everything was on point!! Black girls do rock❤

I love this song - my mother’s name was Sophronia (and her sis n law is my Aunt Sara) so this performance makes her memory extra special. 💙 Thank you Nina, and thank you Kelly, Marsha, Jilly from Philly, and THE Ledisi!
True story I’m 33 and my mother has been gone almost 13 years next month, and I’ve never heard someone else have her name, SIRFONYA! RIP LOVE YU MOMMA!!
They definitely should have posted this long time ago! Each of them fit the part and they sing differently but emote the story well, in their own jazzy way. Love the grit and contempt Jill sang “Sweet Thang” during her, fitting so well with the words in her parts, and then the sorrow she sang it when they all resang their names. Kelly was clean, intentional yet soulful. Marsha knows when to cry out with emotion, can feel the pain of Saffronia’s words with her voice. And Ledisi, killed it! Blunt and powerful just like Peaches. Loved it all. Also shout out to the camera and lighting staff. The camera under-pan to Ledisi when the light revealed her was perfect.
I just appreciate the fact that these four sisters stood and delivered this powerful story with grace and poise and didn’t battle with one another vocally. I know each one of those strong women but I called them mom, grandma, auntie, neighbor, sister, and friend! Still powerful after all these years!!!
Shout-out to the bassist and piano player as well! I can't believe that it took y'all this long to upload this epic performance, but better 12 years late than never!
This performance brings me to tears each and every time I watch it!! Such poignant emotion from each one of these beautiful ladies! But, honey, when I say Ledisi showed us who “Peaches” represented, I mean we heard her loud and clear! Thank you! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
When I first saw this I almost jumped out of my seat. When you listen to the original and Nina gets to the "my name is Peaches" and her voices breaks - it gives you CHILLS!!! So Ledisi KNEW what she had to do when she shut it down and she did NOT disappoint. All of them were PERFECT. And don't get it twisted Kelly and Jill could have done Peaches, proud too, but I love how they sang their parts exactly the way they should have and didn't just try to outdo each other. Ledisi was pure perfection.
