- Featuring three ladies who have been striving in Singapore as foreign domestic helpers. Each of them have touched us by being exemplary in building a harmonious relationship with their employers. From them, we learn that family needn't necessarily be linked by blood, all it takes is mutual understanding, kindness, and respect (the recipe for a peaceful family unit to us)!
Our FDWs can be family too.

I can understand her. My grandma eat so little, that's why I ask her back then when she still alive. She said she can't eat more than that because her stomach can't take it.
She can't eat normal serving in one stitting that's why she eat enough but she likes to chew something occasionally.
When i thought about it, i also took after her. Eventhough it's not that bad. I just eat normal serving. But i cam't eat more than that unlike others. My stomach get full really easely
its so sad, that the inequality leads to people having to leave their children, families and home to survive.
And the way this video portrays the unfairness and inequalities is disgusting. The cute music in the background almost made me puke 🤢

@@palomaruz3169 actually as someone who used to have a nanny and still knows ppl that have them, they rly do become a part of the family, the only sad part for me is that they are separated from their families and have to travel so long, most families are not abusive nor do they act in humanely, the kids gotta learn tho that their helper isn’t a slave that’s the most important thing, common respect for each other 💜
@@nayjashah7368 I understand your point and what I'm highlighting is inequality and poverty that pushes these women to accept these jobs. I'm not saying that some families treat their domestic employers fairly, I am saying this situation comes from an extreme capitalist world, where we will do anything to survive, even if it means the huge sacrifice these women have to make.
@@palomaruz3169 note that these jobs are not all that unwanted. A nanny’s job is on high demand especially in countries where both parents have to work. I’m fact, my cousin’s nanny is paid $3500 a month because that’s how much her rates are. That’s more than what graduates in Singapore get. So there are many who willingly be nannies for extra money or because graduating from college doesn’t get you much anyway. Why not work at a place which is in demand?
I miss my Nanny (my babysitter) I used to call her auntie. She worked for us for 24 years until she was no longer able to work anymore and we took care of her. She passed away years later after she was sent back to her hometown and I found out two weeks after her death and I'm still hurting until today. I miss her and love her each and everyday. RIP my true soulmate.

Edit: This comment is gross to me because of the underlying layers of classism and elitism in it. People whose families can afford to outsource their childcare and housework often speak of the people they PAY to take care of them as "family." They're not family. YOU PAY them. Often this false perception of paid-employee-as-family on the part of the employer allows the employer to justify all sorts of boundary-crossings and exploitation of labor ("You shouldn't need that time off. Come on 'vacation' [really just continual work] with us. You're family.") There is no way that someone you or your family pays to care for you is your soulmate. That is an entirely one-sided relationship. Did you know many slaveholding families used to imagine they received love from the people they held captive and forced to care for their children? Delusion? Narcissism?

I'm sorry for your loss. I bet she was a wonderful woman. even i had an Auntie growing up and she took care of me from birth... she's not with us anymore but the memories and sacrifices she made for our family will always remain with us

My aunt didnt feed her maid. Her maid had to buy her own food so most of the time she just ate instant noodles. Some people just have 0 empathy

I have a domestic helper too and she is my family. She is older and I treat her like my grandma and She treats me like her grandson. I am so happy to have her. I cannot thank her enough for the help she does. Sometimes I do feel bad for her as she has to work at this age but she is very independent and doesn't take money for free and the only way to give her salary is to employ her. It works for both of us!
News flash: your domestic helper is not your family. You pay her to work for you. You might like to pretend you think of her as family because that eases your guilt, bit she is not your family.

@@mewho6199 I had a nanny who treated me like i was her own child. When she had to retire, she would borrow me from my parents so i could sleep over. And even when i had to go far away to go to college, she would drop by our house and look for me. She doted on me a lot to the point where her younger children got jealous. Why do i say she treats me like her own? One time she told my mom off i wasnt my mom's child but hers 😅 anyway, just bc you get paid to look after other people doesn't mean you dont grow attachments

Some families in my country treats maid as a punching bag. They treat them so bad. Let alone thinking them as a part of their family. I feel so bad for them . I wish there was a law for this kind of acts.
Sadly most of arab countries gonna make an action if the maid or helper is already dead..
it’s sad to say that many maids/helper in arab country were in prison just because they fought back and killed their employer who abused them and some of them are sentenced for death
I ve been a maid myself for 2 years. About 15 years ago I was in Jidhafs Bahrain, and lucky me, my madam and her family treats me nice. We just few years of age gap, maybe thats why. I heard bad stories, some are my fellow maids. Overworking hours, verbal (and physical) abusive, unpaid salary, that s real. But whenever my boss reads or heard this kind of mistreatment she and her husband always said "you re working for me, but you re still a human too, why would i treat you that way, when you re here to help me taking care of my family, then you re part of the family" may Allah always protect the family, i missed them.

for 11 years of my life, I had a nanny from the Philippines and she is the most special person to me. She was like a second mother to me and she watched me grow up from the day I was born. She loved me like her own daughter and left her whole family in the Philippines to provide money for them and as a family, we made sure every single one of them was taken care of. I now live in a different country so she doesn't work for us yet I make sure to ring her every week, provide her with money for her and her family and I miss her like crazy. She was the best person I had ever known and Covid is keeping us apart. people who work as nannies are such amazing people. Always treat them with kindness. ❤️

the term used by the interviewee are more appropriate than the one POSTED by the uploader. Maid is more associated to being servant, than being dignified as someone who makes your life more convenient such as 'HELPER'

i never refered to them as nanny or maid because they're more than that
In the US, we call them “housekeeper” unless their duties are primarily childcare, then it is “nanny” or “nursemaid”
Omg....I miss my kakak.......She’s been with us for 10 years but she went back for her son, she is literally the nicest and the closest person to me....She watched me growing up since im still in my mom‘s womb，She taught me a lot of stuff，she knows me better than my mom.....Whenever I wanted to share my joy or sadness，the first person that I would ever think of is her......I miss her cuddles.... its been 7 years already and I still miss her...

@@ariikcn6590 Be real, since when do men look after their children. It's totally an exception in families (except dude is widowed or single parent). In my country, 70% of women work part-time and look after their children. Even in case they work full-time they still see their kids at the end of the day plus weekends.
However, these women can't see/hug their children for years.
Damn this is the second video that I’ve watched about maids. Before I watched one where the maids gave more correct answers about the kids mind as the mothers. Respect to these women.

I use to have maid and we treat as family. She tells us about her dream to work in milk factory and we agree. So now she's working there and still contact us.

I can actually relate to Colin I am very shy and introverted outside the house but with my Aunty I speak the most . Even I tell her that when I grow up I will take her with me to the U.S and help her travel. She would wake me up in the morning for school and now for online school too she wakes me up for my online classes, cooks me my favourite food on Sunday and rest days she prepares what is healthy. She loves me and I love her back 💞
My mom actually works as a house cleaner she works with 2 or 3 story houses alone the family's are very nice to her and give her clothes,shoes,toys ,and food for her and my siblings also my dad my mom works until 5 and comes home at 6 the people she works for are very nice I also worked for one of them well for 2 days to help my mom since I had no school ir was hard but I came throug it so I know how my mom feels like and how the kids that can't see there mother tho to work that much or not at all I know how that feels but I manage

This makes me sad because my aunt is wealthy enough to hire these live-in maids but she taught her kids to treat them only as maids. The few times that I came over to her house and hung around, I could see how disrespectful her kids were being to those ladies, with one being significantly older than the women in this video (must be in her 60s). One time around 11pm, she even told her kid to come to that maid's room, woke her up and asked to come make some food for her husband. Then in the morning, she would have to be up at like 5 to prepare breakfast for their whole family. I just felt so bad because that lady was sweet and honest just like the people in this video, yet she was treated poorly and with no respect whatsoever from my aunt's family.
Thats messed up. We used to have a non live-in maid around 7 years ago and we all treated her like our family. My grandma was still very rude tho but the auntie knew how to stand up for herself so it was so funny to see how defeated my grandma would look after. Probably because the whole family was on the maids side because we knew my grandma was wrong. We moved countries now but I wanna visit her again when we go back
This is the problem with inequality, I can get why this is preached, you know how old and alone people in the developed countries are robbed and harassed more? Because human nature tells you the odds there, here if you become too warm with your maids they can get jealous as well and cause you harm, there is always some news article of families in developing countries being murdered by their own maid and their allies because they have first hand information about the wealth of their employer, of course all of this inequality is reducing only because the economy is getting more stable, unlike the past, stable and good economy dictates human behaviour, let's not blame anyone trying to keep anyone in check, as a warm modern society we still keep a check on a lot of things and still wrongly let misdeeds flourish as well
This is why I treat them as my extended family. When we eat, we eat together as family. We share each other's stories and joke with each other. My mother made sure that we didn't take them for granted. Their help is a privilege. Now my mom is gone, we let our employees make decisions when it comes to managing the house. They are unsupervised. We (siblings) live abroad. So, we trust our employees. They have been with us for an exceedingly long time as a family.

I miss my nanny who has been with me since I was 7 years old. She knew me so well, she saw my flaws but she still loved me. We fight sometimes because of misunderstanding but i always love her no matter what. She is like my big sister to me. Every night before we go to sleep, we always have a small talk about her life, her family in the province, her future plans, etc. And now, she’s married with an american guy and is now a mom. I’m so grateful for her because she took care of me and my siblings when my mom is busy at work (which we completely understand bc shes a single mom) LETS NOT FORGET TO THANK OUR NANNIES🥺♥️♥️
We have a house help in Kenya as well.... She has been there since my husband was 5 and now he's 32. He loves her so much she was one of the first people we told when we got pregnant.

These aunties need to be paid more. They are underpaid, and have to work a lot.
But that's why they hire immigrants, because they can pay them less. They would never hire an american white woman to do this job, because they would have to pay her minimum, fair wages.

My family had a maid, she worked with us for years, eversince i was a smoll lad. You could say she's a big part of our family. She's old now, but i was surprised that she still want to work with us despite having a family in Indonesia.

My mother left Puerto Rico to work in the U.S. I will never forget all her sacrifice s. Like these incredibly strong women, she swallowed alot of bs because she was not stupid. She will always be my hero. To all women putting the needs of their families first, I thank you.
Some women prefer work to being a mother. I'm glad woman like this exist to fill the gaps that situation leaves in children's lives.

My mom work as domestic helper in her whole life. My father didnt take responsible for me. Sometimes when i finished my classes, i went to the house where my mom work to help her. And now, i am 3rd year university student, my mom still work as domestic helper, but the owner let me live in the same house with my mom. ❤️

In india, we used to have a domestic helper too and it was much easier to talk to her than my own mom. My parents were in a different country at that time so we only talked around once a week. I also used to hang out with the domestic helpers kids more than my own sister and cousin because they only lived 5 minutes away and we went to the same tutor. I definitely miss hanging out with them more than I missed my family while they were in Canada and I was in India.
My heart flies to all these kind, hard-working women. 🤗

Our maid actually have her own room and bathroom and we always give her food from what we cook but i still feel sorry for her since she left her kids and came to work as a maid just to let them live a good life.

There is this woman who worked as nanny for elderly in singapore from my hometown. The sweetest thing was that when she chose not to continue working, beside gave the salaries, the family she worked for build her a house and visit her from time to time..it is like a new set of family living far away

Taking care of my mom is my greatest desire and honestly, I have failed at it, so I completely understand the lady who sends everything back home and remains with just top-up money to make calls. It doesn't matter what you do if you can take care of your family, that's priceless💖

I used to have home helpers too, she’s very nice and we treat her like a family, but she doesn’t sit on the dining table to eat, instead she eats in the kitchen cuz she knows that when I smell spice I will sneeze, and she likes chilly a lot XD. I will cook with her sometimes too, especially Indonesian food (she’s from Indonesia) since frying food is very fun

I practically grew up with domestic helpers since young.
My family has hired domestic helpers 6 times and the helper that took care of my family the longest was 11 years
All of them holds a special place in my heart and I think about them from time to time. (except for 1 because she was abusive to my brother and I when we were much younger)
My family still keeps in contact with a few of them as well

We have like more than a dozen of maids in our house but I have never spoken rude towards them because they are just so sweet and caring. Sometimes, they understand me more than my parents. They sacrifice not seeing their children grow up and some are even being cheated on by their spouses just so they can earn more for the future of their family

I guess it’s sorta different everywhere. When I was still back in China I remembered families who have maids or babysitters who we called “hourly caretakers” are families who were super wealthy and if they would have live in maids then that was like billionaire level. After my family moved first of all we didn’t have that much money to hire anyone to take care of me second it was honestly hard for us to accept anyone who’s a total stranger to live in ur house or even do the most basic daily things with/for you. I just that’s kinda hard to imagine.
My uni friend from Hong Kong told me they all had maids from southeastern Asian countries, I was shocked how it’s ubiquitous for them. I respect everyone who sacrifices their own time with family and has to work in another country. I’m also touched to see how these families hiring maids to help them in a way and treat them so well
I've got a maid and she's worked for four years she's quite close to us and i actually used to make coffee for the both of us and we would chit chat except she got sick of the coffee after some time lol
