    Finally, a vole-elimination video that actually offers reasonable vole control options other than one.. at.. a.. time.... duh, people, mouse traps work, but voles can out-breed their effectiveness. Basic one-kill and reset traps are pissing in the wind.
    Thank you for this informative video.

      There are some traps that reset and can catch a bunch at once. A couple of them hook right onto a 5 gallon bucket too! Rats can jump right out, but it seems voles and mice cannot. Check out some resetting traps.

    Sonic spikes are all over our yard. I thought they'll work for the voles or gophers but did nothing to them.

    I have tried it all, on our property in rural northern France. The only things that have consistently worked for me are (1) digging a trench a foot deep around my vegetable garden and keeping it clear. They don't want to come out in the sunlight so they just stop at the margin. Worked pretty well for moles too. (2) digging a similar trench but filling it with fermenting sugar beet waste (used by local farmers as an amendment in the fields, so it's not toxic, just smelly. The leeks in this moat are untouched after months, while most were eaten before I surrounded the last ones, so the voles knew where they were.
    I did have some luck with castor oil in the past but ran out and it does fade after a while. Must order more and douse the margin of my beds. Just to be clear, castor oil is not toxic, just really smelly to these beasts. It is sold as hair treatment for humans so it is safe. The toxic component (ricin) ends up in the ground bean meal, which is also sold as fertilizer.

    This video is helpful. Sometimes you have to try several things to see what works. The thing is the moles dig tunnels to eat worms, grubs, etc. The lazy voles use those same tunnels, too. And then gophers come and make it worst. That seems to be what is happening in my yard. I used the granular castor oil moles/voles pellets. If directions are not followed exactly you will not get the positive results I got. Yes they ran away to the neighbors yard and 😩came back 3 weeks later . I find that if I sprinkle and water in every 2 weeks it helps more. I also dug a trench around the gardem bed and that worked BEST of all. Next I plan to DIG A TRENCH down 2ft AROUND MY ENTIRE URBAN LOT and fill with metal or rocks. EXTREME MEASURES FOR EXTREME CASES!!! My son trapped 3 using baited PVC pipe. They multiply over the winter. So work hard now to eradicate the little boogers. 💣

    I've found that spraying the little trails with Roundup Extended Control (the one in the brown jug) will do a couple of things: 1. it'll kill the vegetation that covers their trail, which takes away their "cover" from predators, and 2. deny them the food they love to eat. I think they don't care much for the smell of it, either. It seems to either kill the little guys, or make them find a new place to be ...

    Marine flares or flares the police use at accidents, lite them and put the flaring end in the tunnel, I use a metal pipe, pushed into the tunnel beforehand, making sure the tunnel is open into the pipe, light the flare, insert into the pipe and cap it, it blows the smoke, sulphur into the holes, we have a JR and she's on alert, they are toast when they get out of the smoke,

    Install a Barn Owl nest box. A nest of owls will eat more than 3,000 voles in a season. Mount them 8 feet high.

    Zince phosphide will kill animals that eat poisoned animals. The amount varies on weight of predator, amount of poison ingested, stage of poison degradation in prey.

      But he mentioned that it's a first generation poison based on how it is made. That means it won't poison predators.

    Are these products ok around water wells? Chickens? Cattle? Cats? Dogs?
    I've always been taught that castor beans were extremely toxic to cattle. I would imagine the oil would be too?

    Sonic spikes don't work. 2 weeks after I put out sonic spikes out, voles dug mounds 1 to 2 feet from each spike.

  • @tommyranger1

    Save your money on the sonic spike. I tried two and they didn't do anything. The voles would pile up their dirt right beside the damned things.

      I had the same situation, they burrowed all around the Spikes. did not work at all, the exhaust fumes in the tunnels works for a while but has to be repeated often because they will come back. I am trying a new treatment, with a road flare lit and stuck down in the tunnel. I have also been shooting them when they come up with a pellet rifle.

    I have been trying to deal with voles, tunnel by tunnel and it is hard to find them all. So the sonic spike would be a great area protector. But I have read disparaging reviews, basically saying they are as effective as sonic mosquito repellers. That is to say, not at all. Does anyone have either documented or anecdotal evidence to support these sonic devices? Thanks

      Try setting the output of your computer or cell phone to external speakers and put a remote speaker on the ground, then play a dog whistle sound through it.
      I'm going to give it a try. Nothing to buy nothing to loose, but an hour or so.
      We can't use poisons, as wells nearby feed our town. I'm concerned about castor oil because there are cattle nearby. I understand it's very toxic to cattle. Too much wildlife here to use poisons, and my neighbors and I have dogs, cats and chickens too, so looking for a solution. A roto tiller would definitely get them out temporarily. I think I'm going to start with rototilling and running a dog whistle through a speaker into the ground via a portable speaker (hoping the cats and dogs are OK!)
      Voles are cute, but are apparently good at carrying Hantavirus, ticks with Lyme disease, etc., so definitely need to get these critters out of here! Cats have been busy with mice all spring and rats, possums and bunnies have been prolific this year, so gotta get rid of these critters!

    • @Ubiquinode
      @Ubiquinode 2 года назад

      @@CarolReidCA 1. Castor oil is not toxic, the toxic components don't end up in the oil (which is commonly sold as a hair treatment for humans), it ends up in castor bean meal.
      2. Hantavirus in the US has been associated with deer mice, which often enter cabins and the like. Not voles.
      3. Lyme disease has been associated with higher than normal populations of all rodents, including voles. But this was European research and the species of vole you have is not the same.
      My personal opinion is that the only reason to control voles is because they are eating the food you are growing.

      You can try putting your computer output to speakers, put on a dog whistle sound, above our hearing range, and put some speakers on the ground. I may try this myself! Voles are bad this year!

    • @Ubiquinode
      @Ubiquinode 5 лет назад +5

      Voles operate almost entirely below ground too. They eat roots instead of mainly worms and insect grubs but same underground tunnels. Many products are designed for both. I used a smelly powder (from BSI) which seems to be mainly garlic powder and after putting it in all the tunnels for a couple of weeks, we have been entirely free of moles for two months plus now. I have started the same with the vole tunnels and the results are still unclear. Try garlic power and/or hot chili powder.
