      Seems cliche however I came off of opiates heroin at22 and after a clonidine detox the best advice the old-timer had was was show up 4 90 days + 90 meetings. Keep your mouth shut and listen I was told. Introduce yourself as Long story short this was key and with 10 years without a drink or drug I knew then he had given a second chance. As we're all in our heads I felt it made sense and to his it saved my life. Needless to say life's paths have twists and turns .So pls learn 2 enjoy your truths. Remember if not for him I may have died.

    I remember before I got sober I had a hard time understanding why someone with months or a year sober would suddenly pick up drinking/using again because they couldn’t handle it anymore and just wanted to feel normal again. My thought at the time was if you made it that far how could you not be feeling better. And now that I’m there at 11 months sober I can understand better. Anytime I think about drinking it’s not because I’m bored and want to go out and have fun and party. It’s because I’m having a horrible episode of PAWS and I just want to slow everything down and feel “normal” again.

    • @DRKJFOSTER

      Hi Nathan - Congratulations on your 11 months of sobriety. I'm glad you are starting to better understand the process of recovery. It definitely helps to be aware of PAWS so that you are better prepared to move through these, often sudden and seemingly out of the blue, symptoms. Thanks for watching!

    Thank your for speaking on this. Im going on 4 months clean from a 3 year cannabis addiction. The first 2 months were very rough. Im still have anxiety and panic attacks but each week seems to be a little better. I wish I had known this was a possibility. People downplay that cannabis is a serious substance

      Congratulations on your 4 months, Malik. That is wonderful. And yes, it will get easier. I was just talking about this the other day with my son about how marijuana is becoming like alcohol was in my generation. It's so common now that the risks are overshadowed by the fact that so many people use marijuana and it is much more socially acceptable than it used to be. Glad you are making the decision to get healthy. Your body and brain will be much better for it!

But starting yesterday I noticed I had a few good hours. I felt myself getting excited about the little things and it made me cry. But then the panic came back. But I know now that my brain is healing. I need to stop being so hard on myself. Thank you so much for these videos. 27 years of weed and alcohol. I think, personally, the post withdraw is the worst phase because of just the frustration alone. I have had three friends go through this and I see them struggle day by day. About 55-60 days ago, my short term memory all but disappeared what seemed like over night. I feel like I’m going insane. I’ll be texting someone and after typing the first few words, I completely forget why I was texting that person in the first place. Thanks for the info. Have been on Benzo for 30 years. I have never taken more then .5 MG clonazepam per day. I want to come off these and have started a slow taper by breaking a .5 into 4pieces. I think you seven strategies are very helpful.

    • @DRKJFOSTER
      @DRKJFOSTER  Год назад

      Hi Tim! Thank goodness you are tapering because 30 years is definitely a long time. As a result, you will most likely experience some withdrawals even with the taper, which is to be expected. But the taper will certainly lessen the impact to your body and brain. Like any recovery process, it will take time. Embracing this fact and giving yourself time and space for recovery will also help to lessen the impact. I just recently quit drinking caffeine (after probably 30+ years) and the withdrawals have been pretty awful. I'm glad to know you found the 7 tips to be helpful. Much good luck to you and your continued recovery.

Although I’m way better than the first 4 years the anxiety and depression still hits me for a day or 2 monthly. It’s mind boggling how long it takes for the brain to heal.

    • @DRKJFOSTER
      @DRKJFOSTER  2 года назад +1

      Gosh, that's a hard question. The risk is that, depending upon the environment, it could lead back to marijuana use. The issue is with the neuropathways, the connections that have been made in the brain relative to people and places where you have used marijuana. Also, alcohol numbs the prefrontal cortex. My suggestion would be to avoid any alcohol use, especially while you are experiencing PAWS.

What are your thoughts on Enlyte D ? It’s supposed to be good for addiction as it helps with the methylation cycle ? Another good thing that’s subtle but helps is grounding , go outside bare feet for 20 minutes . The very best thing I think after the acute pain is over is PUSH YOURSELF THROUGH with small spurts of exercise as it will get those endorphins flowing . @LeslieGMN 4 года назад +1

      @Cindy L Yes, “dying inside” is EXACTLY what benzo withdrawal feels like! I was taking up to 8mg per day and still running out early. Twice in the past year, while waiting horribly uncomfortably for refill day, I had near-fatal seizures that landed me in hospital.
      After the second seizure, unable to find tapering advice, I underwent three weeks of inpatient detox. I emerged Xanax-free, but still suffering from all of the panic attacks, PTSD, agoraphobia, and anxiety for which the Xanax was prescribed in the first place.
      I have not yet found the answers-I’m only 2 1/2 months benzo-free-but when I’m “dying inside,” I tell myself that I won’t use today. (Not that access to benzos would be easy for me these days.)
      Best of luck as you withdraw and heal...

    Dr, ever since I stopped using kratom which was about 1 year and 5 months ago , I’ve been dealing over whelming waves of anxiety , sweating out of the hands and feet , intrusive negative thoughts , and many more of the paws symptoms. I guess I’m just reaching out to tell you it’s been a year and 5 months since I’ve stopped and even though the episodes did seem to improve over time , this last episode of mine was really intense and I don’t remember it being this bad , I guess I’m just looking for someone to tell me I’m not crazy and that this is still paws and my brain healing. It gets almost impossible to deal with life when these episodes of anxiety hit me , and it’s completely physical , mentally I know everything is fine and I’m not really panicking but my body is just going crazy.

      Hi Matthew - Thank you for your kind words. Yes, this is most likely PAWS. Depending upon the types of drugs, length of use, quantity, etc. PAWS can last for years. I don't like to necessary highlight this fact, because it has a tendency to scare people, and it's much easier and more productive to focus on one day at a time rather than getting caught up in how long PAWS may last. Especially because you can go for months without any symptoms at all and overthinking can cause unnecessary stress in and of itself. This is also why a support group is so important, because there is not much you can do when these episodes strike, except to lean into it and make yourself as comfortable as possible until it subsides. Sorry for the delayed response. I've had Covid the past 10 days and just now starting to feel better. I hope you are feeling better as well.

    I've been sober from alcohol for 9 months now after 15 years of daily consumption of 2 bottles of wine. The longer you stay clean the longer the stretches of good days will be. Mine lasted on and off for a total of about 2 years. I don't want that to scare you because it was intermittent and I went sometimes for months without anything. What I wish I knew then was how other factors like stress and what I put into my body also impacts the PAWS I experienced. I drank a ton of caffeine, didn't exercise much until I was about a year sober and ate really badly too. Those are factors that can make PAWS worse. So it really depends on various contributing factors. The good news is that you are at 1 year, which means you are that much closer to your brain fully healing. The problem I have is I cannot tell if my post-acute withdrawal and mild to severe depression is truly something that can be talked through. When I consciously think to myself about my past trauma, I have accepted what's happen and forgiven. If I was asked is that consciously affecting your day to day I would say no, I came to terms. In reality I think to some degree it affects my unconscious mind though. I really don't want to go on SSRI's if there is something I'm missing that I'm not doing or if it's truly that my mind needs assistance after years of abuse. It's been 8 months since last use I just know I do not want to live like this forever. Can anyone speak from experience as to if they had a long Post Acute Withdrawal? • @DRKJFOSTER
      @DRKJFOSTER  4 года назад +3

      Yes, it's possible. There are many factors that impact how long you will experience PAWS, how often, and the duration. You can go for a significant amount of time without experiencing any PAWS symptoms and then have them come out of the blue. Stress has a significant impact on PAWS and the potential for relapse. I recommend you watch the video by Dr. Kevin McCauley, called "Pleasure Unwoven." It's one of the best videos I've ever seen that explains the impact of alcohol and drugs on the brain, and also the impact of stress.

    It's hard to stop taking something when you deal with extreme anxiety, and have a chronic pain. Yet you don't wanna have to take something everyday either. I've been on Suboxone for over 12 years, at 16-24 mg. I just stopped taking them 28 days ago, took myself from 16mg to none within two weeks. I'm in so much pain, and depressed, and anxious... Im thinking I should've slowly tapered would have helped, yet I don't wanna go back after being off them for almost a month, seems like that would be going backwards. However, I don't wanna just sit around in so much pain that I don't wanna do anything either...it's a horrible position to be in. Each day I wake up, I'm praying and thinking today has to be a little better than yesterday,...only to find out it's the same, or even worse on some days.
    I long to have energy again, and motivation to do anything.

    I've been dealing with PAWS for 8 months now. A little bit of a background...I'm 40, obese, have moderate/severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), have a very long history of major depression and major anxiety. However, I was only on marajuana edibles (I took a few edibles every day) from December of 2021 to August of 2022 and then from December of 2022 until February of 2023 (and I have no history of using other drugs). Given the relatively short period of time I was on edibles, is the prognosis good for me when it comes to how long of a time it will take me to heal? Like will I probably be healed by the 18 month mark or? To be honest and frank, I'm just feeling very scared and overwhelmed right now and would like some encouragement or reassurance. Thanks.

    • @DRKJFOSTER
      @DRKJFOSTER  10 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Joshua - There are so many factors that contribute to the type and length of PAWS symptoms, including underlying health conditions. I would guess that your CFS is definitely a contrituting factor as well as your struggle with major depression and major anxiety. You didn't mention if you are taking any other meds or you were just using edibles?
      That said, I do believe your PAWS will improve as long as you don't resume the maijuana use. Once you reintroduce the drug into your system the gain to your brain healing is completely undone. Keep moving forward and your brain will heal!

      @@DRKJFOSTER- Thanks for the reply. I've been on anti-depressants since the age of 10. I'm currently on trazodone, buspirone, Vistaril, gabapentin, and Lexapro. I also take a variety of different medications for different heath issues. Another thing is that I have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder/ASD (I'm on the high end of the spectrum). I'm seeing both a counselor and a psychiatrist. One of the things that I'm really struggling with is that I always fear the worse case scenarios (especially when it comes to PAWS right now). I'm really afraid that this is going to last years for me and the thought of it really scares me as PAWS is incredibly difficult to get through (that's why I was asking for reassurance and what not). Would you say that it's pretty rare for PAWS to go on for years and that it's likely in my case that it won't last for years on end and that my negative thinking/worst fears about it really has little basis in reality? Also, is it true that PAWS tends to get easier as time goes on? If you can't give me any more reassurance, than that is understandable.

    • @DRKJFOSTER
      @DRKJFOSTER  10 месяцев назад +2

      @joshuamiller9286 Hi Joshua - Yes, your mindset is very important. Your PAWS should not last years. Anticipate the best-case scenario for yourself. You have a lot of support and professionals helping to regulate your body chemistry. Create a mantra for yourself about getting stronger and healing, then recite it to yourself when you're doubting or falling onto fear.

      Hi Paul - It's hard to say. I would seek out medical advice from someone who specializes in treating - and has extensive experience in treating - substance use disorders. It could be PAWS but it may be something else and it's better to be safe than sorry. I am not a medical doctor and even if I were, it's not advisable to give advice over the internet without knowing your full health history. Nice video. Some practicals will help. Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice and have a healthier life. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep inhalation-exhalation needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath. Stillness brings internal peace. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

These periods when I'm feeling better last 2-3 weeks then the bad periods come back where I get extremely fatigued, depressed & don't want to do anything at all & recently these awful periods last 3-4 weeks, it gets so bad that just want to commit suicide the only thing that keeps me alive is knowing how much it would hurt my family. I hope that you are being monitored by a psychiatrist or addictionologist or another medical doctor that is highly experienced working with individuals recovering from a substance use disorder. They may have something that is non-narcotic that can help alleviate some of your symptoms. I do believe it will last at least a year, but hopefully the good stretches will start to get longer. The good news is that it will eventually get better as your brain continues to heal.
