I was 10 yrs old when this song was released. My parents were in a bowling league and used to drag me along on Monday nights. To placate me, they would give me 2 quarters for the jukebox. Back in the day that meant 6 songs! I would play Mississippi Queen 4 times and Hand Me Down World by the Guess Who twice!!! By week 3 of the league the jukebox suddenly had an "out of order" sign taped to it; but strangely only on Monday nights! LOL!!

Somehow stumbled across this page. This coming from an old guy who was there when all this stuff first hit the airwaves. No idea who this young man is but it sure is nice to see someone his age enjoying the hell out of this music. Back in the day when human beings played actual instruments, singers actually could sing. No auto-tune, no computers, very, very little overdubs. Mississippi Queen" is 50 yrs. ago!!!! And his reaction says it all.

Mountain was one of the hottest band in the 70's....Excellent band!!! Mountain is an American hard rock band that formed on Long Island, New York in 1969. Originally comprising vocalist and guitarist Leslie West, bassist and vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight and drummer N. D. Smart, the band broke up in 1972 and has reunited frequently since 1973. Best known for their cowbell-tinged song "Mississippi Queen", as well as the heavily sampled song "Long Red" and their performance at the Woodstock Festivalin 1969.

"When I think of Rock n Roll, this is what I'm thinking about." That's EXACTLY what I thought when I first heard it. It was like I'd always been waiting to hear it. And I'd never heard of them! (That's rock for you. Lol.)
Felt same way about "Rumble" by Link Wray - that was a big one for me. Same kind of thing you've been sort of looking for, maybe without knowing it. Except that's not...it's a different rock, but a huge part of it. He was a father of rock - but hardly known save for more recently.
Another great hard rock tune, and this is Hard Rock, is "Heavy Metal" by Sammy Hagar. And "Bad Motor Scooter" and "I Got the Fire" by Montrose.
And Leslie West, the guitar player, was the singer on this, too.
That pic of them....those guys.....when rock was NOT pretty. :)

It was great to hear Mississippi Queen ! I agree, it ended too soon. How about listening to Riders on the Storm by the Doors. Thanks for having such an open mind regarding our suggestions. Love your channel!

Leslie West...(RIP) HUGE mountain of a man, guitar and the vocals on this track. The other singer and bass player, Felix Pappalardi made his name as a producer before playing in Mountain.
He produced The Cream albums... (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker & Jack Bruce CREAM...)

I have never heard of this band before, its not my kind of music though I know my older brother would love it. I don't know if they were big here in the UK but they were brilliant instrumentalists especially the guitarist that was brilliant playing. I'm glad you liked it so much Jayvee, you are a real music lover. Take care and stay safe please my friends, God bless you all, love hugs and peace to everyone Mary-Ellen UK

I saw them in London. The bass was so loud you could feel your stomach move when certain notes were played. No wonder Felix had hearing problems later in life

The main riff was also played by the bass player, which gives that extra kick . He used fuzz . Leslie West is the singer and guitarist. They were named after him because he was so big.. Have you listened to Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf ?

You have to remember songs back then HAD to be radio friendly for length to get played by radio stations.

Aye, there were some very good bands that didn't get much airplay because they made radio-unfriendly songs...a prime example is Ten Years After. They had one radio hit, I'd Love To Change The World, but most of their catalog never got air time because of their length.

@@r.awilliams9815 I had that album. It was an excellent album, Alvin Lee was a great guitarist. For Mountain, I think the original "Nantucket Sleighride" was over 4 min. Steppenwolf had "Monster", "For Ladies Only" and the original version of "Magic Carpet Ride". I completely agree.
