    When you talked about wrapping, it reminded me of my college days. I had very little money and was invited to a little girl's birthday. I bought her a set of coloring pencils from the supermarket but had nothing left to buy wrapping paper. So I went home I took a sheet of white paper and painted it with a lot of colors. At the party, I was a bit ashamed she had so many big, gifts wrapped in shiny, beautiful papers. But when she got to mine, she just caressed the painted paper and let out a soft: " wooow!".
    I had tears in my eyes, intention and care really do count when gift giving.
    Anyway, thank you for your very informative video.

    Very interesting video! In the Asian (Chinese) culture when receiving a gift you should pretend not to be interested 😅. You never open it in front of the person gifting your gift, you always do it in private. If you open it in front of them you look greedy.
    So if you ever gift a gift to an Asian person and they don't seem impressed, it is because to them opening it is rude.

    I liked all of these points. Beautiful presentation, Ms. Musayeva. I will add something that a friend taught me many years ago, and I think it’s important. After you have sent a gift to someone for any occasion, even for a wedding or birth of a child, under normal circumstances do NOT contact that person to see if the gift was received, or ask if they liked your gift. Once you have gifted someone, your work is done. Forget about the gift. The receiver will acknowledge the gift (hopefully) or they might not. Any inquiries about the gift could result in embarrassment for the gift receiver and will very likely not make you feel better about the lack of a “thank you”. Thoughts, anyone?

    I agree it is person specific. I grew up in North America, opening a gift was not expected, not even at a party so as to not put the giver in a position in front of other guests. Ask. Alcohol used to be the thing when going to a persons home, especially for a meal or as a thank you but that has changed as we have become aware of addictions. I travel internationally and people do ask for lovely pens or a tea from the location I visit. When people stayed with my grandmother the first time they gave her a teacup/saucer or gift certificate to the place she paid to do the laundry. Especially at weddings or graduations money is appreciated and needed. Non scented candle if you do not know their scent. So agree with the budget. We also changed holiday gifting to name exchanging due to not wanting more 'stuff'. Do not expect the person to keep the gift. So agree with wrapping and I have cloth that a Japanese friend gifted to me years ago. It has come/gone from my life for 20 years. Such good points on receiving gifts. It has been a problem in extended family as many do not give any thanks. Some adults have avoided family gatherings and limited visits by children while not sharing they avoid it because they feel guilt at neglected thank you's. A thanks is so important. How do we deal with relatives who give us gifts based on what they think we should like or how we should decorate or continue inappropriate gifts for children?

    These are some very wise suggestions....I have been dealing with my friends and family disappointment for years: every time they gift me with something, it's something I cannot eat (I have many allergies), some smell I hate, parfumes (I'm allergic to alcohol) or clothes in sizes too small and colours I never ever wear....the frustrating part is, I talk and see them quite often, so they should know these things: every time I open the present I always try not to let them down and thank them....and then they want to see how the clothes look on me or ask me to eat whatever they bought....of course that's when everything goes to hell since they don't take subtle hints like "no now" or "sorry I'm not hungry" and then get disappointed when I say I cannot or see the clothes don't fit at all: the sad part is they suggest I loose weight (I'm not fat at all) or ask me to make an exception to eat what I'm allergic to...and I have to explain them it doesn't work that way, but they still insist and I end up getting angry or my parents have to usher them out of our house with some excuses because they become too insistent. They should watch your videos.

    • @Kleomenides86
      @Kleomenides86 2 года назад

      @@redhead0122 I understand perfectly! For years I have saved gifts I didn't want or couldn't use because someone had put time, effort and money to buy me a gift....Until one day I realized it's not so: while I always select gifts with care, if you gift a person dear to your heart something she/he's allergic to, doesn't ever wear or don't ever use, you either pick a random gift or recycle one you yourself receive....maybe even you didn't consider the real person at all if you keep acting as if the person has no health problems and no specific tastes. I'm not saying they do this maliciously, but surely they are not very considerate and attentive.
      So now I simply give those gifts away of if it's impossible, I throw them away. Sometimes I'm lucky and I know the shops they bought the gifts in and I'm able to switch them.
      It's hard, expecially since you are disappointed and sorry for having to give up the gift, but it gets better with time even if it probably shouldn't.

      @redhead0122 2 года назад

      @@Kleomenides86 yeah as I already mentioned with your family it is way more extreme. For example I got a bag for traveling to my mom. But prior to that I talked with this person about how I have to many bags and trying to sort them out and I already got a new travel case 2 months before the occasion which they knew about. So the intention was good but just not really thought put into it. So its hard for me to get it refunded or give it away as they had good intentions. and I don't want to be ungrateful even if I can't use it. I am pretty minimalistic and hate clutter so this is kinda a dilemma for me 😅As I put a lot of thought into my gifts it is kinda hard for me to understand that people aren't as attentive when gifting. I have lists in my phone what the person likes and doesn't like, if they mentioned they need something or want something so I can pick the right thing for them. Good for you that you have a way of dealing with this situation although it will probably always be frustrating.

    I didn't skip the video for even a second...I love watching your videos bcze they are so informative and so relaxing... I've realised following etiquettes is such a beautiful thing rather than just being a crap when it comes to treating others... Please keep doing more of these... Also I wanted to know how to refuse people in a polite manner bcze I'm a girl who cannot say no to anyone and bcze of that , I usually end up trapping myself...so I really wanna know how to politely refuse people... Loads of love ❤️❤️❤️💖🤩

    What should you do if you get lipstick on the cup/glass while drinking? 😶

    • @simple4kill
      @simple4kill 4 года назад +86

      It's generally not a problem, since a lot of women wear lipstick and it's almost impossible to prevent transfer - you only have to be careful to always drink from the same spot, so you don't leave the whole rim painted!

    • @doroparker1702
      @doroparker1702 4 года назад +33

      A real lady always carries tissues in her handbag.
      She can do a lot with it.
      Remove the stain with one tissue.
      Gently press the lips on the tissue before drinking to not leave ugly stains.
      Before going out to an event you can think and plan accordingly.
      Apply some forever stay lipstick which leaves no red stains everywhere.
      Especially on formal occasions this is the best lipstick ever. Your lips will look perfect for up to 24 hours.

    • @caoimhenimhuireadhaigh1303
      @caoimhenimhuireadhaigh1303 4 года назад +33

      The English royal family has a rule that those wearing lipstick must drink from the same spot on their cup or glass, to prevent, as another commenter said, the whole rim being covered in lipstick marks. To try and get none on the rim is to hold yourself to an unreasonable standard, and likely to take you out of the moment, leaving you poor company.
      Many find long wearing lipsticks very uncomfortable, so don't be hard on yourself if you can't stand wearing them. If you don't mind them remember that they are not fool proof, and still hold a high likely hood of transferring, particularly after eating.

    In the Netherlands it’s pretty common to give money (especially at children’s birthdays) in a card because that allows the person to buy something they’ll definitely like, or save up for a big purchase! We even have kids asking for only money so they can buy the phone or game they want! I’ve gotten perfume before but I never wore it because i didn’t love the scent.

    I would actually stay away from scented candles, cut flowers and anything involving perfumes and aromas unless you know the person loves that particular thing. A lot of people nowadays are allergic or sensitive towards smells, so it may cause discomfort at a big event, not to mention fragrance preference is very individual.
    If you still want to gift a perfume, some fragrance companies may have matching service, where you bring a sample of what the person usually wears and they suggest based on their catalog.

    • @100spoonsonatable9
      @100spoonsonatable9 4 года назад +3

      Adding some nuance to this: while it's common nowadays to be sensitive to smells (I happen to be too), it's mostly chemical smells that trigger this. Natural scents are generally a safe bet considering there's always a small risk when gifting. Flower allergies are rare. You make a very valid point, it's very thoughtful to think of this. :)

    Hi Jamila, This is the third of your video lessons that I have watched and I really appreciate your perspective of good manners being all about considering the feelings of others.

    I saw this great advice on reddit that when your budget for a gift is tight, buy a nice version of something small that would usually be quite cheap instead of an "average" version of something less useful. For example, with $15, buy a very nice pen or notebook instead of something "bigger" of low quality. I loved the video!

    Couldn't agree more how important it is to understand what's appropriate in certain cultures.
