- In this video, I'll show you how to do the thumb slap, my favorite way to add some simple percussion into your guitar playing, and I'll give you my best trick on how to master it. While the technique is simple, it certainly isn't easy, so I have written out four exercises that you can practice, as well as a short little percussion study so you can implement everything you've learned in the most rewarding way: playing actual music! You can download those here 👇

This is really good, Matt! Great tutorial!
I'd be curious to see what's your personal process for arranging a song 👀
Fantastic first tutorial, Matt! You’ve got a wealth of knowledge to share and I’m definitely looking forward to more of these
Thank you, Nathan!! I really appreciate all your support through this whole process. Definitely excited to put out some more teaching stuff
Great tip man! Honestly, talking in front of a camera is a skill in it's own, and you're a natural! Looking forward to more vids like this from you!
Thanks man! I certainly don’t feel like a natural but I’m glad it comes off that way😂. Just gonna keep on practicing and getting better
Very helpful for a classical guitar player. Thank you.
You’re welcome, glad you found it helpful!
Cheers from Canada.... lots of patience needed 😢😢😢 as used a Pick for 40 years!!!
It’s a big shift from pick to fingers but stick with it and you’ll get there. Good luck!
Looks like a pro tutorial video!
Thanks man! Such a different style of video but it’s been fun trying stuff out
Love this, Matt. Excellent job explaining and demonstrating this technique. Is this your first tutorial, man? Everything flowed perfectly!
Man, thank you so much! You have no idea how much this comment means to me. Yes, it’s my first tutorial and it was a giant experiment lol. So different than performance videos, but I learned a whole lot and it feels great to be trying out some new stuff. Really appreciate your support man
Very good tutorial Matt, Thank's for charing, Ciao! from Montréal

Great job! Clear explanation and professional presentation!
Thanks man!!
nice!
thanks bro
You’re welcome, hope you found it helpful!
Matt, it really looks like you have been doing tutorial videos for a very long time! This is solid advice, clear and concise. It will help to understand and learn this technique a lot faster. Also, I am currently learning to "slap" a bass string AND play a note on that same bass string, but doing both at the same time is very tricky (the technique is slightly different). This could be an idea for another tutorial!
Thank you! I appreciate it. That is a fun technique, I used that in Roland Dyens’ “Fuoco”. Not sure if you’ve ever played that but it’s really fun. I found using the side of the thumb helps cuz it’s more bone so it provides a harder surface to really slap the string. I’m sure you could look up some bass tutorials, I think it’s kinda similar to what they do
@@AcousticOST Holy wow, I just listened to it; this music is INSANE!! A lot of sounds I am not used to hearing in a classical guitar. Thank you so much for the discovery, I will study all this!
@@SorandaGuitar you’re welcome man! Roland Dyens wrote some of the most innovative guitar compositions and he has some killer jazz arrangements too. You should check out his jazz album ‘Night and Day’
Am I the only one who absolutely loathes the thumb slap? I play classical, acoustic, flamenco, and every acoustic genre in-between and the thumb slap is just nails on a chalkboard to me. It's so not musical
You’re definitely not the only one lol, I’ve heard many others who don’t like it either.
For me it’s all about how and when it’s used. Some of my arrangements just need that extra groove that the thumb slap provides but it’s all just preference

You will change your mind about percussive fingerstyle i promess :)
