  • In this video, I'll show you how to do the thumb slap, my favorite way to add some simple percussion into your guitar playing, and I'll give you my best trick on how to master it. While the technique is simple, it certainly isn't easy, so I have written out four exercises that you can practice, as well as a short little percussion study so you can implement everything you've learned in the most rewarding way: playing actual music! You can download those here 👇

    Matt, it really looks like you have been doing tutorial videos for a very long time! This is solid advice, clear and concise. It will help to understand and learn this technique a lot faster. Also, I am currently learning to "slap" a bass string AND play a note on that same bass string, but doing both at the same time is very tricky (the technique is slightly different). This could be an idea for another tutorial!

    • @AcousticOST
      @AcousticOST  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! I appreciate it. That is a fun technique, I used that in Roland Dyens’ “Fuoco”. Not sure if you’ve ever played that but it’s really fun. I found using the side of the thumb helps cuz it’s more bone so it provides a harder surface to really slap the string. I’m sure you could look up some bass tutorials, I think it’s kinda similar to what they do

      @@AcousticOST Holy wow, I just listened to it; this music is INSANE!! A lot of sounds I am not used to hearing in a classical guitar. Thank you so much for the discovery, I will study all this!

      @@SorandaGuitar you’re welcome man! Roland Dyens wrote some of the most innovative guitar compositions and he has some killer jazz arrangements too. You should check out his jazz album ‘Night and Day’

    c'est mieux de ne pas utiliser que le snare mais aussi le kick je trouve. En utilisant uniquement le snare ( comme dans la video ) nous sommes de suite moins libre et nous sommes obligés de muter certaines notes parfois. Alors qu'en alternant kick + snare, on peut tout jouer et entendre proprement chaque basse. Il est possible de faire des notes slappées avec le snare mais cela sonnera moins bien que de les jouer normalement et d'utiliser le kick en même temps. Puis d'avoir plusieurs types de percussions permet d'avoir une musique bien plus vivante aussi. Pour le kick on utilise le poignet qui vient frapper la table d'harmonie ( quand vous jouer la premiere basse, vous tapez votre poignet sur la table en même temps et vous alterner avec le snare )

    Am I the only one who absolutely loathes the thumb slap? I play classical, acoustic, flamenco, and every acoustic genre in-between and the thumb slap is just nails on a chalkboard to me. It's so not musical

    • @AcousticOST
      @AcousticOST  Год назад +1

      You’re definitely not the only one lol, I’ve heard many others who don’t like it either.
      For me it’s all about how and when it’s used. Some of my arrangements just need that extra groove that the thumb slap provides but it’s all just preference
