  • Located within the city of Kilgore, Texas - you will find steel derricks dominating the skyline. Although these are no longer oil-producing wells - it hints of a past of large-scale industry in the region.
In this video, I give a brief summary of the discovery of the East Texas Oil Field by wildcat prospector, C.M. Joiner and it's subsequent history.

My grandfather worked for HUMBLE OIL from 1928 to 1958.
I was born in Rusk Co., Overton, 70 yrs ago.
My dad was a Troup High School football coach at the time. 💟

I've lived in and around Kilgore all my life. During the Oil Boom, Kilgore was a town of roughnecks, bars, and brothels. A lot of people got rich quick and the people with most of the money settled in Tyler Texas. Kilgore today is a nice Texas town of a little over 12000 people with good schools, low taxes, relatively low crime and Kilgore Jr. College, home of the world famous Kilgore Rangerettes. The College has an outstanding Oil Museum that everyone should see. On Commerce street where you see all of the derricks on each side of the road is where the East Texas Oil Men's Chili Cook Off is held each October.. Thousands of people, live music and all the free food you can even dream of eating. It's 2 days of pure debauchery clili cookin and it's serious business! And last but not least, no matter what.... Friday Night High School Football rules.

My grandmother lived in Kilgore in the 1930's then to Overton before Humble took them to Luling, then finally the Permian Basin in 1960. She mentioned that in Kilgore there was a store that had an oil well in the back parking lot (Montgomery Ward ?)

@@rowdyyates8626 :) Hi Rowdy. That's a unique name you have. My baby sister from Gladewater, had a very very dear friend by that same name and I met him a few times. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago. Anyways, yeah. East Texas is a great place to live.... take care

There are many places like this in Texas. To make it a rich town again, we need to develop it as a tourist destination.🎡

If you washed all the dirt away, East Texas would still be standing because of all the pipelines under it.

The great glory of the past creates a longing as great as its size.
Now that Samsung is building a factory in this close distance, a good opportunity will come again.🧐
