- It has been fun going from a dead mall video fan to creating my own videos. Mountaineer Mall has stuck with me since I saw it on Dan Bell’s channel. It was so exciting to see the place with my own eyes. I hope you enjoy my Midwestern perspective in this mall.

Thanks for filming this!
I miss when this mall was open, our new mall doesn't have nearly as much nostalgia for me. Was a really great place in its prime
Today 12/30/2023 I just finished walking through the mall, did 3 laps. It’s still in very good condition. Have a lot of great memories as this was the Mall that we went to when I was a kid
I wish all old malls received this much TLC.
I worked at that Lums 1983. It’s like stepping back in time to go in there. It eventually became a restaurant called the Golden Ram, operated by an Iranian gentleman who was a former Lums manager. There was a big kitchen fire and that pretty much did it in.
There WAS a big fountain in the mall, not just that little thing at the back entrance. When you were talking about giving blood, you were standing in front of the former anchor store JC Penney. The fountain was in front of that.
When the mall was terminal, that was one of the first displays they took out. They added that lower addition on around 1988, they poured a huge amount of money into it but it couldn’t compete with the new and exciting Morgantown Mall that debuted in 1990. The stores left in droves soon after it opened. I liked the mountaineer mall much better.
The service at that Lum's was slower than molasses. Can you provide any insight as to why?
Fantastic video! I’ll never get over that ramped section where so many famous liminal space photos have been taken, hope I can get to this one soon aswell.
Nice video bro!
The Lum's was the original occupant of that space, but in later years, a different restaurant called the Golden Ram or the Golden Lion or something like that moved into that space. There was some noticeable remodeling, but not so much that the entire place became unrecognizable,
I'm amazed that that train was working.
The space across from Lum's, which you show from 9:22 to 9:31, was a hot dog place called Weiner World.
The space you show from 9:43 to 10:02 was originally Pizza Inn. Pizza Inn was a well-known local pizza chain. In later years, Pizza Inn departed, and it became Pizza and Pasta by George.
I can't believe mentioned Pizza and Pasta! That was the only thing I ate every time went drove up from Faribault to go to the Burnsville center... which we did a lot. Best slice in the world. Also the mall video that directed me toward your channel. And yes- your relaxing voice is part of the charm.
Faribault and the Burnsville Center? I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm certain you're not talking about the Mountaineer Mall. The place in the Mountaineer Mall was actually called Pizza and Pasta by George, so I don't know if it's the same thing you're talking about. That place was originally called Pizza Inn, which was a locally famous pizza chain. I didn't know anyone who ever set foot inside the place after it became Pizza and Pasta by George--thus giving me the impression that the food was terrible--but I don't know for sure.
This is one of those videos where you just captured the excitement of the first few dead mall trips you go on. It was invigorating! (And thank you to letting me in the cool kids car for the haul back to Pittsburgh!)
Mountaineer’s stuck with me too all these years, and it truly is akin to seeing an old friend after many years while being so happy to see it’s doing well relatively speaking. The fact you caught the trains working was awesome too.
The flooring and the areas where it's a lot of white, glass and metal reminds me so much of the old Kingsport Mall which was a 1970s gem in East TN built before Fort Henry Mall. It has two anchors a Hills at one end and a Montgumery Ward at the other end, a bunch of smaller shops and a 2 screen movie theater called the Martin Twin. What I wouldn't give for a time machine, or just to see a video of inside the old place. Thank you for these trips down memory lane for those of us born in the 70s and 80s.
Morgantown has another mall thats perfectly fine, has a movie theater, open businesses, some vacant store and rotating seasonal businesses along with big box and anchor stores. We just didn't need two.
It's perfectly fine? It was dying for a long time. Then Covid dealt the Morgantown Mall its death blow as well. We now have two dead malls here.
Props if that pay phone worked!
I tried, but no dial tone!
Looks like you had a great DMOD family reunion. This mall gave me a University/college feel to it. Idk why. And how many WW signs were there ?! Or was it the same one.
Glad you had a great vacation video. That's the way these videos should be....for pure enjoyment. Thanks for another good video.
Thanks! I felt like there were quite a few WV signs.
@@YodelingLoonRetail In reference to all the WV signs we have here, an outsider once told me, "Man, you guys are really big on self-promotion! The only place I've ever been where it's worse is Texas."
This is awesome dude!
Sounds like you might have some Canadian footage in a few months...
is it still open??
You're eventually going to be murdered going down a long hallway like that...
