I feel like A Link Between Worlds isn't talked about a lot, probably due to its odd remake/not a remake status. It's a shame, I think it's one of the best Zeldas and deserved a lot more praise. There's something about it. I love the way it's structured, I love how it feels, and I love the dungeons and bosses. It's the Zelda I have the least negative things to say about it.
Agreed. It’s proof-like with Link’s Awakening-that a simple story can still be a strength. As much as I loved Twilight Princess and Windwaker and the concepts of Skyward Sword (I loathed the gameplay even before it exasperated a chronic inflammation illness) and Breath of the Wild (I do not own either system), they…got lost in the weeds or had major pacing issues. (We never do get an explanation as to why the Bublins abducted then scattered the Ordonian children, or why they utterly massacred New Kakariko and terrorized Impaz and Ilia in Old Kakariko; and well. The Triforce Hunt in Windwaker is just…bad pacing. Nevermind it’d have been narratively stronger and better mechanically if Tetra wasn’t literally sidelined under a beacon telling Ganondorf exactly where she got dumped off.) But LBW? Okay, so it’s twist is pretty obvious in hindsight-why so much lava, Hilda? Why are you talking to Zelda’s Painting? Yuga did say “her grace” several times-but the first time playing was a “oHH…” and because we get to empathize with her, she still works as a twist villain. Condemning another planet to crumble like hers is pretty ruthless. And with Link’s Awakening? Reading the owl statues and talking to the NPCs has “something’s not adding up…” but having the Nightmares literally pleading with you to *stop,* finding the relief revealing the island’s nature but having your owl guide basically gaslight you, then pull the trigger and…it really was destroyed afterall and you’re now stranded at sea and left to die? …Oof. I’ve played LA DX countless times and it still punches me in the gut and fills me with dread. (And imo, OoT tried to be TOO Big a narrative and utterly failed at it-kinda like how its Hyrule Field is so…boring and utterly empty even with the shard of agony to say “oh look! Bombable pit with a cow inside. Isn’t that nice.”) Simpler stories can still be meaningful, especially if they have the space for side content, like with Majora’s Mask and Breath of the Wild. Sure I do love my complex stories, but Zelda has yet to really do a complex one better than mediocre while it has some spectacular simpler ones (and many simple stories that are, Eh. It’s just an adventure romp versus anything groundbreaking narratively but -other than my dislike of Damseling Tropes- that’s okay.)
@@bl0ndi550 Idk its def the best 2D Zelda and does a ton of things amazing. It felt really close to BOTW and TOTK in terms of me being able to lose so much time just exploring and always finding cool challenges or items.

The Saria's song thing is also hinted at pretty blatantly... you talk to the Goron outside of the shortcut and he says something along the lines of, "Darunia really likes the music you can hear coming from this door."
God I love ALBW so much. I really wish its structure and dungeon style is used in a BotW-styled game, I think it's a really good compromise between the old and new formulas.

I share King's taste for the Oracle games, especially Ages. Mermaid Cave is probably my favorite Zelda dungeon because of its mysterious and more extreme past/present changes. More people need to appreciate how good the Oracle games are.
I miss handheld style games. I assumed that when the switch came along we would be getting the efforts of both the handheld and console teams in the same console, rather than the longest drought between original releases in the franchise history.

The bosses were the one reason I'd want you to bring in some commentary on the Switch version. Also, I remember the Game Boy genie boss being pretty hard as a kid, due to that last phase where it would just keep spawning on top of me and your lack of health. That's where I picked up the habit of always having the medicine.
I am somewhat worried that it feels like we might not be able to get any more games like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. With the success of Breath of the Wild and the upcoming Tears of the Kingdom, I struggle to see Nintendo ever deciding to scale down their games as they could do with the Handheld games. Oracle of ages was my first zelda game and seasons my second a year later. I got them both on christmas and they are still my fav games in the series :)
I honestly think that this is the best format for LoZ. I played almost every handheld Zelda and there’s something about playing a game about solving puzzles and exploring the world on a handheld that makes it enjoyable. Also as a kid we had limits on tv and computer time, but sneaking in some more time on the gameboy was much easier, and many nights were spent under the covers with a little flashlight since they didn’t have built in backlighting until the SP. Sometimes I would even have dreams where I would solve puzzles that I got stuck on, since I played until I basically passed out.
I always enjoy K's reviews and its such a relaxing way to just go mindless and work on art. Thank you again for all your effort into these videos I really love them and to an extent like to model some of my process for artwork scripts for speedpaint videos similar to your style!
to this day, the ending of a link between world has the 2nd most emotional ending of all the mainline zelda games. the moment a new triforce is created for lorule is amazing, snd the ending credits starting with the title screen’s triforce and dead triforce and then switching to both triforces being golden along with the music is the perfect bookend.
I got Link's Awakening new as a kid in 1993 and it has been my favorite game ever since. When I was younger it felt like people only talked about A Link to the Past then Ocarina of Time when it came out. Link's Awakening never got that love back in the day. Glad to see people enjoy it now.
I appreciate how you recount your playthroughs, thoughts and experience with these games. It's not always in line with mine personally, that's ok tho. It's your review, from your perspective
I'm so glad you covered these. 2D Zelda is incredibly overlooked these days, and I'd argue it has some strengths even the 3D Zeldas (pacing, fluid gameplay) never got right. I'd love Nintendo making a new 2D Zelda soon. The GBC Zeldas, to me, are some of the best adventure games, and some of the best experiences in 2D gaming, period. Also, I 100%ed Minish Cap as a kid. Because I was crazy, it was my first Zelda game and it was my only Zelda game. More on Minish: To me it always felt like the perfect "first Zelda."
I still remember the moment I found out about the secret reward you get for beating Link's Awakening without dying once. 2 times. I'd died 2 times in my playthrough. That's why I never got it back then. I almost broke my phone in sorrow induced rage. It had a crack in the screen from that time onward. Link's Awakening isn't my favorite, but it's easily in my top 3. Very few games *period* have moved me like that one did, so it'll always have a place in my heart.
Link's awakening is my first and favourite Zelda title and I have played it countless times since I was young. From the original non DX release, to the DX release and the switch remake. It honestly is the best paced Zelda game. Not a single dull moment.
Now about Minish Cap: sure, if you want the heart piece, you need to do all the figurines. But if you're already open to not getting 100%, then why bother with the heart piece? After you have enough hearts, one extra isn't really all that useful.
The three GameBoy games have always been my favorites in the Zelda series. Link's Awakening was such a breather after Link to the Past. Same with the Oracle games after Ocarina of Time. All of those are great games but there was just something about that GameBoy style that I love playing and revisiting.
I remember when I was 6 or 7 my family took a long road trip to visit family and I spent almost the entire 8 hour car ride playing Link's Awakening on my giant brick Gameboy. I was stuck on so many parts during the drive but I remember when we got to our relatives house I just unlocked the 6th dungeon and was so pumped to resume playing later that night. When we were winding down for the night I ran to the car to grab the Gameboy and when I turned it on the game had deleted every save file. Still not sure if the game's battery crapped out or if there was a loose connection but I was devastated. Didn't pick it back up until DX came out, but I made sure to enjoy every lost moment I could when I replayed it. Now whenever I play any Zelda game I start to get extremely anxious when I approach the 6th level and will save my game meticulously lol
I have hours of thoughts and feelings about just Link's Awakening. The thought that we might be like those islanders is an idea that resurfaces in my mind from time to time.
Me too. I argue that Koholint is just as real as any other reality, it’s just sustained differently (ie, a god’s dream.) So…it kinda makes sense that the Nightmares sealed the Windfish’s consciousness away. Otherwise…they die. Everyone dies. Things were actually pretty peaceful until Link is dragged into this dream-sustained pocket dimension, tbh. It’s a “wait are we the baddies??” and…kinda, yeah. (Insult to injury, Link is still left to die after freeing the Windfish, and his girlfriend’s turned into a seagull when her wish was to *leave* the island and *sing.* Not…have her love of seagulls and the freedom they represented to her taken literally. I’m just saying, the Windfish is a dick. And dying eventually on Koholint is better than drowning or dying of dehydration while left stranded on wreckage at sea.)
"from what i understand its kind of a family tradition" is such a genius poke at all the other Zelda games ever made it just gets me giggling every time
K, I love your videos so much. I have seen your entire selection of videos more than once because I believe they are all so interesting and well put-together. Im about to watch this video in its entirety for my 3rd time.
What I would do to make bombable walls in a room more apparent would be to have the game play a subtle sound of rocks falling with a couple pixels of dust falling when you enter. Or maybe make an item like the map and compass except it just tells you what rooms have weak foundations or something
Ya know KingK no matter how long the video is, how uninterested im am in the topic, or how much of a differing opinion we might have your videos always fucking BANG!!! Hopefully one day i can make videos on your level of greatness

The minish cap: complaining about an optional currency for an optional heartpiece you don't need.
"Say the line Bart!"
*sigh* "...in my opinion"
"Yaaaay!"
"from what i understand its kind of a family tradition" is such a genius poke at all the other Zelda games ever made it just gets me giggling every time
Finally, another KingK video! It's good to have you back KingK.
It's a re-upload
@@MikeKing001 not to me. I've never seen it.
10:00 I can still hear it. I don't think I will ever forget the sound of King Zora scooting over.
Wooohoooo!
I'm playing A Link Between Worlds now and it's been amazing!
We really need a remake of the Oracle games Because I really wanna play them in a modern format
KingK puts out a 3hr Zelda video and I don't see it til 5 days later? Madness!
This is exactly the kind of content I need for downtime during work
An amazing video to have posted during a long road trip!
K, I love your videos so much. I have seen your entire selection of videos more than once because I believe they are all so interesting and well put-together. Im about to watch this video in its entirety for my 3rd time.
I have a 6 hour driving coming up this week - saving this video for that Perfect moment
Just watched these videos a few weeks ago and I’m down to watch them again ✌️
this was a treat. thank you.
Excited to watch after work. Darn work
That Links Awakening transition was cold, my dude!
Glorious. I just started a new Minish Cap game
What I would do to make bombable walls in a room more apparent would be to have the game play a subtle sound of rocks falling with a couple pixels of dust falling when you enter. Or maybe make an item like the map and compass except it just tells you what rooms have weak foundations or something
Love the video man, I’m gonna fall asleep to these for the next few days
This my fourth time listening to this lol I be listening to your videos while I’m working
Expected a bit more praise in detail for the hero's caves. These two were a true handheld zelda puzzle experience.
Watching this one with my bros, thanks for the awesome videos man :)
So crazy that I first started following you during the lead-up to breath of the wild, and now here we are!
Ya know KingK no matter how long the video is, how uninterested im am in the topic, or how much of a differing opinion we might have your videos always fucking BANG!!! Hopefully one day i can make videos on your level of greatness
