    Even though this is a commuter rail route, the characteristics are more like a streetcar, interurban or light rail line until merging with the mainline. It is understood that due to the quiet zones the bell sounds replaces the blowing of horns. Great job on the video "Amtrak Fan 90368"

      Highliner trains are also being used for the South Shore Line, which is an interurban line. They also share tracks.

    I grew up on 83rd Street right next to this station, and to this day, I sill live here. I work at a consulting firm that's right across the street from the Randolph Street station in downtown Chicago and for me, it's so convenient riding just 1 train to/from work (although very expensive, but to me, it's worth it). At the 13:47 mark, that was a 67th Street full station, but due to a lot of gang activity and drugs taking place there, they shut it down permanently. Now it's just a station where people can transfer to another train going further south to either Blue Island, University Park or of course, 93rd/South Chicago. Thank you so much for uploading this awesome vid :-)

    Food for thought......as bad as the traffic is in Chicago, imagine how bad it would be if they didn't have this massive train network??? I'm looking at you Austin, Texas!! Why we here in Texas didn't DEMAND a rail system in between the lanes of I-35 (just like in Chicago) that ran from San Antonio to Dallas is beyond me. Too late now. I lived in the south suburbs (Chicago Ridge) in the mid 80's and worked downtown. I didn't need a car all week! I walked to the station and relaxed on the train ride to and from work.

    Very nice entertaining video! We had great streetcar service here in Pittsburgh, until the corrupt city "fathers" sold out to GM and replaced the trolleys with busses. We also had great commuter rail on the PRR, P&LE, and B&O, but that was all wrecked in the 1960's. This neighborhood in Chicago looks like it's seen better days, with all the wig shops, nail salons, and check cashing places. How can this train service sustain itself in a place that looks half abandoned?

    • @dbeaus
      @dbeaus Год назад

      There are videos of that corrupt effort on the internet. You forgot some players. Standard Oil and Goodyear were deeply involved in those "conversions". Money flowed to many Senators, congressmen, and local officials like water. I grew up in Chicago and we had the trolleys until I was about 11 years old and then they began tearing them out and they were gone by the early 60's. We loved the trolleys. They were quiet, didn't pollute, were on time and reliable. The only problem was the heat in the winter. It was often as cold inside as outside. But, you had a coat on anyway. In Chicago the money flowing must have been enormous. Well, GM got the buses, Standard got the fuel, Goodyear got the tires and we got the shaft. Sound familiar?

      Sacramento, California once used to have 3 different electric railroads. The Sacramento City Lines was a streetcar system once serving the downtown areas and stretched out to the State Fairgrounds and several parks. The Sacramento Northern Railway once extended all the way west to San Francisco and north to Chico. Finally, the Central California Traction Co. once reached Sacramento and one was able to head south into the significant city of Stockton which also had its own streetcar system. The City Lines fell victim to National City Lines and was converted to bus transit in 1948. The Sacramento Northern abandoned its passenger service in 1941 (just before the war) and was fully dieselized by 1964 with most of the San Francisco to Sacramento line being torn up after 1957. The Traction Co. ended its passenger operations in the 30's and dieselized in 1946. It still exists today but hasn't reached Sacramento since the 1990s.

      They try not to use the horn on most crossings because it is near residential areas and therefore use the bell and go slow. There’s also many unfenced areas next to roads, near houses, etc. so they make sure there’s no one on the tracks.

    • @robrobson3930

      atom starfire productions I totally get that and the velocity doesn’t bother me. But the set-up kind of reminds me of the tram, the Straßenbahn, we have in Germany. Same set-up as can be seen here, but without that incessant bell ringing. I think that might be possible on that section too, I mean there‘s a two lane road on both sides of the tracks. I can‘t imagine someone could be on the tracks by accident. 🤔

    Great Video, WSOR 4012 by the way...how I long for the older, (Not The Highliners) IC 1926 MUs, that used to growl through South Shore along 71st Street, and I remember they had a small yard around 83rd Street too! Back in those days, you could park a 6 Car Train overnight, and it wouldn't be tampered with! With these new MUs, I wonder is the Cab Set-Up the same as it was with the Highliners, which of course had the same Cab Setup as the older 1926 MUs? For you Bell Ringer Haters, through South Chicago, there are many residences along the Right Of Way, that is ONLY one reason the "Bell" is used, and another is that along many portions of the route, streets like S. Exchange Avenue and 71st Street are right next to the tracks, and although GUARDED by many Crossing Flashers and Gates, you always will have certain motorists or pedestrians who will just completely IGNORE them! Many have been killed in their quest of doing just that! The South Chicago Branch used to really be full of Commuters decades ago, my late Auntie rode it over 30 Years from the early 1950s until her retirement in 1980! If they decided to shut it down, Metra would GET AN EARFUL, trust me. People in the area it serves like the fact that you don't have to take the long rides to the Red Line/Dan Ryan aboard the Local CTA Bus Routes such as the #30 South Chicago, or the #71-71st South Shore. It's main competitor? The Far South East Side Express Routes The CTA has gives this line competition for commuters, and also it depends where you work Downtown too, weather it is feasible for you to take Metra or those buses!

    This should 100% be a light rail line. It'd have faster accel/decel which would probably speed trip times a good 30-40%! What's the big deal here?

      So my understanding is that this is a branch line so it absolutely could be a short high floor light rail line instead (and a dedicated ROW one at that).
      The only issues I could see with this idea however is that riders who currently take the branch line to get to Chicago may be opposed to a forced transfer from the branch line to the mainline preferring a one seat ride.
      The other issue I see is being that this is a branch line there probably isn’t much demand to go between the stations as much as just going to Chicago. This line may not stand on its own very well

    Dear Friend:
    I am planning a next trip to USA, to the city of Chicago. I am a fervent admirer of the railroads and would like to know the best Metra itineraries that I would recommend to get to know the city, as well as about CTA or bus lines. Any information about this subject will be of my liking for my trip. Thank you very much for your attention

    A trolley doesn´t have to ring the bell all the time, why this train? Regulation? They both run on ground and mixed with pedestrians. That bell almost killed me too.

    • @DaimosZ

      Because most of the route has a "no horn" policy so they have to use the bell in order to alert pedestrians.

    Cool video, nice skyline at the end. But what do the signs CTC at 15:19 mean? I think on the left one it says also "network" above the CTC? Chicago Train Control? Does the line have a safety system to prevent drivers from passing a signal at danger?

    • @Silver_Turtle
      @Silver_Turtle 3 года назад

      CTC -- Centralized Traffic Control; movement of trains are all coordinated from one location using the signal lights. As to passing a danger signal? If there's isn't a system in place, there should be -- the part from 67th [actually 115th] north can get a bit busy...

      Yeah that's the tracks that the City of New Orleans and the Illini and Saluki utilize. There is a project though in the works to build a junction around Grand Crossing that will allow the Illini, Saluki, and City of New Orleans trains to switch from the CN's tracks to Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line, to eliminate a time consuming switchback on the St. Charles Air Line.
