- Eighteen stories below ground in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, the ancient city of Derinkuyu remained hidden for centuries. The underground city was rediscovered in 1963 when a man knocked down a wall in his basement and stumbled across a hidden room. From there, an excavation revealed the impressive network of tunnels connecting ancient churches, schools and living quarters. In total, the city likely could have protected 20,000 people and their livestock from wars and natural disasters.

My parents were born there we visit every year for 3 months and I hav been there!
Great Big Story I Loooooove the content, I honestly think it is changing me as a human being to be better to others and respect the environment and I have been much happier since i stumbled upon this channel. You always amaze me with the things and the people you find and very frequently post that I cant even hardly keep up!
It would be really cool if modern cities apply old styles like this especially if there is a need for it
man this channel is growing fast you guys deserves all tour subs grear job
This video sparked and interest for us in the underground cities, and was part of the inspiration for us heading over to Turkey for our most recent travel adventure!
I need like an 2 hour documentary about it filmed like this now
Also I've just noticed how this channel finally blooms by the amount of comments and almost the 1 mill subs.
Totally deserved it, still recall when we're just a few thousands in here.
An underground city that can hold 20000 people and is also constructed 1000 years ago... That is just crazy
So much info under only a minute. Wow!
One of the best city I've ever visited, everything is just so mesmerizing
Always good vibes from this channel!
i wonder how they got enough light in that giant tunnel city
*claustrophobia intesifies*
why are people so butthurt about the turks? its their land now just like america is american's land. people lose and win its just life, get over it.
bz those people watch cnn and fox tv that is why brain wash people, uneducation people, they dont have eny idea turkey and another country, they dont read they just watch tv and never search, they just belevie whatever they want, retarded people
I went there, its really cool. :D
I've been there before. It was cool as hell. The guide told us that they had enormous vats of wine stored should they run out of water. Seems like the opposite of a problem to me...
I HAVE BEEN THERE AND HOLY SHIT IT IS SO COOL- but, if you want to go to a far better version of the same experience, most cities have them as well
Beautiful
I visited that place in 2015. It’s changed how I think about tunnels
I know a lot of people say this, but it still boggles me how this channel doesn't have at least a million subs. Almost there though!
Thanks guys, i am from Turkey!

why are you people hating on fatdolan?? -_-
have you all gone mad? you doesn't even know him
+FatDolan just ignore them... or report their comments
FatDolan - it makes me sad because turkey is beautiful and was becoming a modern first world nation but not anymore 😒 Erdogan is an islamofascist dictator
Erock Stoenescu he was kinda ok at first then he fucked the whole nation up people vote for him just because of islam
FatDolan - yup and he supports Isis over the Kurds which speaks volumes in itself. Plus he just built that hundred million dollar palace. He thinks he's a khalifa and is gonna rule the country until he dies
Amazing Turkey
we were suppose to go there but there was no electricity (throughout the whole country) :( cappadocia is gorgeous !!
there was no electricity for that one day when we went there
Recent update said these aren't 1,500 but 12,000 years old. Also another underground city just as big was discovered nearby in the same way just 2 years ago.
I've been there it was amazing.
Awesome... thank you👍
Woah, went there in April for vacation. I didn't get that deep though, but I saw the kitchens, wineries, even trapdoors. It was a cool experience!
It was said that this underground city is for the early christians to hide from an empire (romans if i recall). we visited to the remnants of churches. There are even dark church (a church with some different painting, maybe dark painting, i forgot) but I didn't get inside there because i need to pay again lol
Wow imagine finding that.
Man, I wish I found a dope tunnel like that.
Masha Allah ✊🏽❤️🇹🇷❤️🇹🇷❤️🇹🇷❤️🇹🇷❤️🇹🇷 turkey have enough history
yeah, turkey built this city lol
@@schensho6567 You're joking right?
Stolen history. These are Greek/Roman ruins 🤣
AC Revelations Derinkuyu anyone?
Me
Amazing!
I get terrified by caves/closed spaces and thoughts of running out of oxygen there. But I enjoy horror. I shat my pants watching this video. So, thank you :)
Anuj Nagpal i ve been to that place. In the deepest part of this city there is a cemetary and some parts of this city is not good for fat people because it is narrow as hell.
Thats sad to look what people say "turkey beautiful" but this all dont have conection with turkey only with greeks armenians and assyrians. This underground towns are culture of capadocian greeks.
The ironic thing is, since these tunnels were 1000 years old, they probably protected the community from Turkic raiders when they first arrived in Anatolia.
that's fascinating
I've been there... in AC Revelations.
Eclair Lacroix I'M TURKISH I CAN GO

Lucky person to have a city hiding behind a house wall, i wish i had that house
Another video I just saw of this said it was built by the Hitites in the seventh or eighth century B.C. Which is it?
Turkish nationalists hate anything that has to do with Greece or Byzantium, so they like to misrepresent these as belonging to an earlier time.
Wow 😳 amazing
I've been there
so cool that can be a temple
Joe Rogan Episode with Jimmy brought me here, wow this is crazy.
Assassins Creed Revelations lets you discover that ancient town ^_^
It was built much earlier than 1,000 AD
this is so cool
Assassin's Creed Revelations
i've been there, its really cool 😍
Really cool?
Too short
It's like the SILO
nice
It’s more like 3600 years old.
so you dont stuff the turkey huh
Probably more than 10 thousand years old.
I've been in them
I just visited there! They were made by the first Christians to hide from Romans and other Pagans. They're all over the city! I went to the Göreme undercity and could only go down two levels :")
This is potentially untrue, the tunnels are more likely closer to 12,000 years old and were likely created in order to shelter from catalysmic wetaher events.
sounds like very fantasy place
Maybe I'm being selfish, but if I found it, I would put a flat screen TV, a Playstation, and a pool table and kept it to myself.
i never het to see um yoivpost at 1:00

All of these videos from "Great Big Story" are all to fragmented and lack in complete story telling. I wish that they were all more encompassing and complete.
The best way to survive is hide under the earth. Evolution proved that, Our ancestors did that, we still do it now
The Middle East never ceases to impress me. Definitely a place to explore. Who knows what else one might find underground or in a cave...ahem... a hidden species of red haired giants?
Pueblo O why red haired
I overdosed from cringe in this comment. At Least your being creative A for effort

It was all going well for the city until Ezio blew up a bomb there and killed everyone.
@Doomsday Taco Why yes it is. In Revelations you get to go to Cappadocia. You end up causing mass murder by blowing up a bomb that causes the entire city to be enveloped in smoke. Many people suffocate to death.
