    What is your opinion of the Twin Cooled Harley-Davidson engines?

    • @carlbruhn1772

      I think the M8 will be the last of the air cooled built in mass. The pan American revolution engine will likely start crossing platforms. The sportster died in Europe due to their emissions. Great place for the revolution to debut

      I just finished all upgrades to my 14 SGS 103 to 110. It’s done! All air cooled with love jugs. Runs just as I hoped it would. I pull a trailer and wanted low end power. It pulls like a train😊. Anyhow, if I were in market, I would prefer a total water cooled scooter like the challenger. I hope H-D will offer a full dressed challenger… challenger. I would seriously consider it. Hell, I would buy a challenger if it had lower fairings with speakers along with the tour pack.

      Great video, I had just learned about the twin cooling. Wonder why it has not crept down into all the touring models? They really did a good job hiding the coolers. If I were looking at a Street or Road glide special I would consider. But its a big $$ jump up from the base model.

      It doesn’t work, my 2014 cooling system failed twice and most people I know with this same setup have had water pump failures, right up to present day. It’s a similar situation to hydraulic clutches, Harley just can’t get them to work. They finally gave up on the hydraulic clutches and should give up on the liquid cooling.

    A couple of years ago we were on a 2 week crosscountry trip. One RG, my Ultra Ltd and a 2014 CVO Ltd twin cooled. All three bikes had Trask turbos installed. All of us were pulling 300 lb camper trailers. The second day in on a Sunday, the CVO water pump failed. We were an hour or so to a dealer so we headed there, keeping an eye on temps but of course they were closed. We were sitting in the parking lot trying to decide what to do when a bike pulled in and asked if we were ok. Told him our situation and he said "just ride it, wont be a problem". We were a little skeptical until he told us he was the head mechanic at another HD shop. We didnt have much choice so we carried on, again watching out for temps and knocking. Following day we tried to find new water pump but they were out of stock because a lot of people were having failures. Long story short, we continued our 2 week trip and put about 5000 miles on the CVO without the water pump working with no issues at all. Got home and replaced the old pump with the new upgraded pump. Bike is still running like a champ.

    Bought a 2014 Ultra Limited brand new. 40,000+ miles on it now, no coolant or water pump problems so far. Traded in a Gold Wing for it. I do have to admit, the Gold Wing was almost as reliable as the Harley. But not quite.

    I own a 15 CVO RG Ultra that is twin cooled. I live in western Arizona where Temps can be very extreme. I love the liquid cooling simply because of being in situations (city traffic and lights) when my cooling fans engage and I know my motor is in need cooling and traffic doesn't permit it. Its a nice advantage and I'm at 75,000 miles and I've never had an issue with the cooling system 👍👍👍

    2014 Ultra Limited - H2O Pump went out @ 30k (P1019). Was 100+ miles away, called mech said it was fine to ride home, just keep it under 3k RPM's. $500 later = fixed ($300 upgraded part / $200 labor).
    There was a recall for later Rushmore models and if you find that your H2O pump fails (and it will) do not replace it with OEM, get the upgraded 2017/2018 part.
    As to selling these twin cooled bikes to the "look at me ppl", have owned & ridden many HD air/oil-cooled bikes over the years & at my age now can afford + appreciate my rolling couch - I still ride in the rain / heat / etc... but now do it in style and comfort!

    I bought a used 206 Ultra Limited last year. The salesman didn't really give me much help as to what all the features were. I soon found out that I knew more than he did. I checked my coolant reservoir a couple of times and found it to be a bit low when I thought it was running a bit different. A couple of months ago, right before Thanksgiving, I noticed a puddle of coolant under the bike after I had parked it for a short time. I have the extended warranty and took it to my dealer. They checked it and said it had been overfilled. They didn't charge me but I know I didn't overfill it. So what I'm trying to say is that I'm not quite sure about the "wet head yet. Love your videos, I'm learning a lot about my bike and the 103 in it.

    My2cents...I will have to beg to differ with you on the ability of the bike to run without the water pump ect... lots of us have been doing high compression builds...to the point compression release are required or extremely helpful to save the starter/battery ect. You can run as far as you need to at normal speeds ... for example ...one of my bike was a 96ci took it out to 107 port polished everything and everything thing else ... standard oil pump ... no oil cooler...it did require compression releases ...did parade duty no problem ... can't see where it would be a problem except for warranty if they knew ...yall have a good one ... thanks for the content...

    Just got home from a 4300+ mile trip to the Gaspe Peninsula. As we we leaving from New Brunswick, the check engine light and temp light came on after about 7 miles on a cool morning. Since the town we stayed in had decent resources, we turned around and waited for the Canadian Tire to open, and while we waited, had a quick look at the coolant overflow tank, which showed low level.
    So we bought a jug of coolant, topped off the tank, and headed back to the moose-infested riding day, which was beautiful--no issues.
    Next morning, took off again, and just before our first gas stop at about 180 miles, the temp and CEL came on again. Had a look at the coolant tank again, which was full to the top this time. So, we drained out enough to get it back to the full line, and then took off again, without issue.
    Next morning, both lights came on again after about 3 miles, and from then on for the next 1000+ miles home, both lights were on within a few miles of every startup, and never again went off. Along the way, I forced the fans to kick on a few times, just to see if any heat would come out of the lower fairing vents--ambient air only, every time, so yeah, the pump was shot.
    Never leaked a drop, and never ran poorly, and after reading several real-world accounts like this before making our way home, we soldiered on.
    90+ degree heat, Chicago traffic, road construction, rain, and heavily loaded 2-up, the bike just didn't seem to care. Mind you, I made sure to coast with the clutch in when slowing down a lot, tried my best to not let it idle very long, activated the EITMS, ran the best fuel I could get, avoided full throttle, kept the speeds in check (70 and below, except when passing big trucks).
    I'm going to pick up the new pump upgrade kit this morning in about an hour, and wanted to share this story to hopefully help others who might overreact when this happens to them.
    2014 FLHTK, 62000+ miles as of last evening.
    YMMV

    I haven't mounted my oil radiator yet on my 2000 heritage due to a defect in the construction in my opinion, too narrow channels in the transition between hose connection and adapter / radiator. The channels from oil pump to filter are nearly 8 mm but the connection is only 6 mm, a bit much considering that my bike has a high flow pump and a better camplate with greater flow installed, i have to change some parts first and also i had to leave the adaptor to a friend that can help me by welding on some more material so i can drill out holes and thread them for larger couplings before mounting. A side-mounted that i bought is also preferred instead of a central-mounted one that obstructs air flow, there are low-mounted solutions, but there you have the splash from the front wheel instead.

    From what I understand - and I’m no expert, as the newest bike I’ve owned is my current ‘74 shovelhead - is this: panheads run cool, shovels kinda hot, evos run cool, twin cams run hot as hell, and Milwaukees run fairly cool. So I can see the reasoning to try and cool down the twin cams, particularly the heavy touring bikes.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 года назад +2

      Ironically on the Twin Cooled bikes they didn't do it for emissions or performance, it was purely rider comfort. Although they could of put some compression in it for power with the cooler heads.

    I think Harley Davidson should've used a liquid cooling on the cylinders also. They can put fins on the liquid cooled engine and make it look more like their air cooled engines. In fact some of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers have done that. I think it was Honda in the 80s that said they left fins on her liquid cooled engines for two reasons. The first was the look. The second was it allowed them to run a smaller radiator. And I agree with you the big oil coolers on the newer softails could be replaced by a radiator.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  3 года назад +1

      I've been saying that same thing for years! Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda have done that same thing for years! Kawasaki and Honda even went as far a single crank pin with over head cams they loped very very close to a Harley. Enough that Harley tried to patent the sound which was denied. Honda went back to dual crank pins which is more efficient but the dual crank pin sounds raspy to me. Kawasaki still uses the single crank pin but the new 52 degree 1700 vulcan motor just doesn't sound as close as it used to with the 1500 and 1600. The 900 sounds decent but it's not nearly the sound they used to get with the bigger inch Kawi's.

    Hello, I own a 15 Ultra and the cooling pump just went out at 21900 mi. I’m replacing it myself. The instructions are good except for where to move the wiring and plugs that the fans plug into. I have viewed the videos where there has been trouble getting the 2 black color screws out at the bottom of the lower fairings. I got mine out with no trouble, but went easy and slow using hand tools. Wouldn’t recommend using any kind of power drive tool. Harley used a lot of blue thread locker on them. Before reinstalling them I tapped out the inserts just enough to remove thread locker inside them. If you don’t, the screws are tight going back in. I’m going to use a small drop of blue thread locker about midway of the screws before installing them.

    I just came across this video 2 yrs after its debut.
    I own a 2015 Road Glide CVO now with a 117” Stage 4 upgrade since I hit 95K miles.
    My bike currently has 137K miles since new. I’m the original owner.
    I’m now on my 3rd liquid cooled pump as of last weekend. The original one lasted 76K miles. It was replaced under extended warranty with the new and “improved” version. Which lasted 61K miles until last weekend. After my dealership installed my 3rd liquid cooler the mechanic took it for a test ride and immediately returned back to his shop after hearing transmission noises. Turns out the bolts holding the transmission together loosen over time allowing all the transmission fluid to drain out from its seal.
    So my bike remains at the dealership waiting on parts, as I wait for another huge repair bill since I’m no longer under extended warranty.
    It’s times like this I hate being a beta-tester for HD, since it’s now on my dime.

    The oil cooler was sacrificed to make room for the coolant pump. An oil cooler kit by DK customs (Jams) would add a real benefit to running cooler and an added benefit of routing oil through the oil filter before going through the cooler, unlike the stock oil cooler (on oil/air cooled engines) that runs the unfiltered oil through the cooler then through the filter. Something to think about for the standard M8.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 года назад +2

      Great point! I was surprised they would run oil unfiltered through the cooler on the M8, that's just asking for trouble. It's a shame they keep the oil cooler on the twin cooled bikes since the rest of the engine is still oil cooled.

    hmmmmm radiators in the lower fairings......air goes thru radiators to cool the coolant thru heat transfer, the air pulls away the heat.........then this hot air is directed onto the riders legs? might be nice for winter riding

EPA has made things detrimental to HD's v-twins, so just bring back the water-cooled bikes. tks, keep em running!

It has 42,000 with no issues yet, except for the junk compensator, which I swapped for a sprocket. The rear wheel has rubber cushions and will take any shock load. Also went with the Hayden tensioner, execelent. A little rattle in the primary due to the clutch pack chattering in the basket. Liveable. I still think that by splitting the radiators would accomplish removing heat from the engine by cooling both the coolant and the oil. Doesn't anybody ever say "why not" or "how come"? It gets to the point where it's unbearable! I've installed Design Enginering's heat shield insulators which helped a lot, but the air flow from the radiator is the worst! It would be nice if someone made an aftermarket inner shield for the lowers that re-routes the radiator heat below the bike.
