  • Bruce Lee "How He Achieved Phenomenal Speed"
James Demile reveals the kit that allowed him and Bruce Lee to react and hit with phenomenal speed. Speed is of the essence in combat. Bruce Lee and James DeMile, one of his original students, trained hard to improve their reaction times. James Demile shows it in action. He shows how he and Bruce Lee enhanced their natural speed using his handbuilt electronic speed timers. Still hand built and available to buy.
In 1959, James W. DeMile began his martial arts career in Seattle, Washington, under the direction of the legendary Bruce Lee. As one of Bruce's first generation students, Mr.DeMile had the opportunity of assisting Bruce in developing his unique fighting skills. It was also DeMile's privilege to appear in Bruce's only book, "The Philosophical Art of Self Defense". DeMile was an undefeated heavyweight boxer in the Air Force as well as "Masters Level" hand to hand combat instructor for the (Special Forces Combative's) program at Fort Lewis in 1985 and 1986.
One of the foremost authorities on modern Wing Chun, DeMile has adapted Bruce's modification of the ancient art of Wing Chun and created WING CHUN DO, a practical self defense system for the 1990's student. DeMile is listed in Bob Wall's Who's Who in the Martial Arts, The Genealogy of the Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) Family by the Ving Tsun Athletic Association, The Original Martial Arts Encyclopedia by John Corcoran and Emil Farkas, Bruce Lee's Fighting Spirit by Bruce Thomas. He has also written many articles for national and international magazines. He has appeared in the movies, Weapons of Death and The Curse of the Dragon and twice on the national TV program Entertainment Tonight. He has written four best selling martial arts books as well as produced a number of training videos, including "Bruce Lee's one and Three Inch Floating Punch", one of the most devastating strikes in the martial arts. He has designed and built a number of specialized electronic training devices as well as some versatile spring loaded wooden dummies. DeMile travels extensively throughout the world teaching his dynamic self defense concepts and techniques to students, police and the military. He specializes in accelerated self defense programs for individuals 40 years old or older. His most famous student for learning the incredible One and Three Inch Floating Punch is 80 year old Professor Wally Jay, creator of Small Circle Jujitsu. DeMile is still an active Deputy Sheriff with the Ottawa County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department until 2005.

I would too but it won’t do any good because he’s been dead for like 50 years or so. I will say, if they would have put him in the rain with a High level boxer or kickboxer Lee would’ve been knocked out inside of three rounds. As much as he trained, as fast as he was, He did not have the specific experience to deal with effectively competing with a high-level boxer or kickboxer. He was a very good and extremely charismatic actor who was ahead of his time in the area of martial art films.

James Demile was a modern day martial arts genius back in the early 90's when he opened a studio in North Seattle called Wing Chun Do with the most high tech timer contraptions i have ever seen to this day.Just walking through the place would blow your mind as he let you practice on a machine that timed how quick a gun would go off as you tried to disarm it.The place was the most innovative martial arts studio I have seen to this day and I have been studying many arts since 1975 when I joined the Hung Gar Kung fu club near green lake in Seattle Wa.Thanks for always being a positive role model to the martial arts community and welcoming anyone to try out your amazing contraptions.

As a former student of James DeMile, I was fortunate to train under his guidance for a modest fee of $40 a month. My martial arts journey began with Karate, and over time, expanded to include Judo, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, and Kajukenbo, the latter taught by Greg Lagera, uncle to Marc Dacascos. Interestingly, I had the opportunity to spar with Marc Dacascos himself. Despite being the target of jest by fellow students for his ambitions of becoming a film star akin to Bruce Lee, Marc ultimately proved his detractors wrong, achieving notable success in the film industry.
My quest for martial arts mastery led me to the Philippines for a year, where I delved into the rigorous discipline of Kickboxing. This experience, though grueling, was incredibly formative. However, it was my encounter with Wing Chun Do that marked a turning point in my martial arts career. Under DeMile's tutelage, I discovered the efficiency and advanced nature of Wing Chun Do. This style, as taught by DeMile, was a modernized approach that transcended the complexities often associated with martial arts. By integrating Wing Chun Do principles into my existing skill set, I saw a remarkable improvement in all aspects of my training.
Although my days of active participation in the martial arts have come to an end, with a shift in focus towards the healing practices of Qi Gong, the lessons learned from Wing Chun Do remain invaluable. The principles of Wing Chun Do, I found, are universally applicable, enhancing and refining techniques across various martial arts disciplines. This journey, from combat to healing, reflects a full circle, underscoring the profound impact of martial arts on both body and spirit. Martial Arts truly is a Way of Life.

If you've ever been attacked and bit by a dog, or startled a dog and it attacked you in self-defence - that speed was actually the speed Bruce Lee used to achieve his impressive results in terms of phenomenal combination of technique and imediate action. Lions and cheetahs and leppards use a lot of instinctive JKD for hunting and survival. Those things are extremely fast!.. He managed to learn how to emulate that deep instinctive response and bring it up into the conscious level under conscious control.

@@eugenechun4140 perhaps, not disputing that, but I meant something else. I've just put in contrast extreme speed of animals that comes from their being free from conscious control vs humans who always think before they do something, which costs them precious time. only certain survival situations (fight or flight) that come close, yet they are not under conscious control. What I meant was to imply that this phenomenal speed of animals is something we can think of when trying to imagine Bruce's speed in his kicks and punches. I mean, he somehow found the source of this animal speed, how to become so extremely fast that all this civilized baggage of prefrontal cortex that slows us down becomes temporarily disconnected and that saved energy is free to be utilized for increased performance. By control I meant being able to switch it off and on, not necessarily in context of being able to control the consequences.

It is sad that this complete myth about Bruce moving at such speeds lives on It shows that people do not only understand the times they are talking about, but they have no regard for truth. Get over it, moving at such speeds was an error, so why not call it an error? If this is true at moving at such speeds, it is funny how there is no video of it and in all of Bruce's videos, there is no indication of him moving at these super natural speeds to even give a hint that he could do it.
I respect what Bruce did and taught, but I'm not going along with making him some "god" by making myths a reality. You all want to do that, have at it, but to me it is disrespectful to Bruce.

No one, including Bruce, threw the same speed strikes ALL the time. That being said, Bruce was above most because he mainly didn't give a tel' and his path of the strike went directly toward the target. Also, Bruce stayed in great shape so his muscles could move fast. I've timed others who could strike as fast as Bruce but they were not as consistent as Bruce. Tommy Corrunthers is fast, but he is horrible at staying consistent and often gives a tel'.

2fast2block Are you calling Jesse Glover a liar? I converted the speeds he mentioned in his book in to miles per hour. Bruce Lee's punches equate to about 40 mph. By comparison as I mentioned in another post Ricky Hatton had his punching speed measured at an average of 25 mph. This would indeed imply that Bruce Lee was insanely fast. I don't know anything about the mechanism that they used to measure their punches other than what I read in Glover's book but I find it interesting that James Demile created one for himself. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Bruce Lee's punching speed. You can tell that he is incredibly fast by demonstrations and movies. They actually slowed the camera down to capture his movements. He demonstrated his punching speed (Unstoppable Punch) at a Karate tournament against a world champion (Vic Moore) who could not block his punch. So Bruce's speed has been captured on video. You can doubt the accuracy of the timer they used to measure his punching speed but you can see that he was extremely fast in his videos.

Bruce broke down speed in a scientific manner. Perceptual, reactionary and movement times. All three are equally important. Yes, and do all these internal ideologies make you any faster? Bruce Lee could breach the eye to mind perception of speed primarily through means of understanding human attributes. First, he controlled his nervous system so that in actual combat encounters he realized when you leave an opponent the choice reaction you will be able to witness their primal tendencies. That is, when a man goes to strike he knew the feet must move first, to kick the hands will move first. And always, in preparation to attack, the eyes will rotate down. When you practice these facts then in real combat you use these to gain milliseconds. That t'is all.

      How you build up tendons?

    • @apuzyr
      @apuzyr 3 года назад +1

@@7thNoteOfficial Tendons are best strengthened through isometrics performed throughout the punch's range of movement. In other words, for those tendons instrumental in the forward movement of the punch, simulate the punch against a stationary object while supporting your back to prevent pushing yourself away (e.g. within a doorway). For optimal performance, the tendons must be strengthened (1) at the point or position the arm is out before the punch is initiated, (2) approximately half-way through the punch's range of movement and (3) at the end of the punch's range of movement or point of impact. Hope that helps. You will see results very quickly.

You can only do so much to make yourself faster. :) Physiologically. The rest is learning proper hand and feet positioning. Knowing how to quickly close the gap. Evade. Etc. Boxing 101. The essence of speed...good genetics. We need to be born with the biology to begin with that works in favour of speed. Being "built for speed". James here again selling his ideas. Talking his talk. Flexibility and really letting go of tension until the last millisecond before contact. Like Bruce said his punch is a like a ball at the end of a chain. Most people when punching are tensing their arm muscle as they punch which massively slows down a punch.

Everyone gets so defensive of course when you compare Bruce to today's martial arts he does not look great training. But that does not mean he wasn't great and ahead of his time in the 1970s. Today we have such an advantage and in some ways disadvantage with the smart phone. Advantage being looking at how professional fighters train from Mayweather to Samart Payakaroon. Disadvantage is that we live in the information age too much information is also bad. If Bruce was born in this era I'm certain he still would be ahead of his time. He was just that special driven type person.

There were numerous other martial artist who had incredible speed that didn’t get the exposure that Bruce did. They had better footwork because they came from weapon based arts. People like Grand Master Antonio ILustrisimo, Grand Master Angel Cabales, and Grand Master Ben Largusa. They all came from a Filipino MAs. Bruce’s back ground was Wing Chun Kung Fu who has really bad footwork. Furthermore, Bruce only knew the first two forms of the Wing Chun set. Bruce studied Muhammad Ali and incorporated boxing footwork into his system. This footwork is not great for fighting against weapons. So, it’s really debatable how he would have fared against these other men?

all these guys that hung out with Lee are fake martial artists. they know no martial arts. what martial arts do they know? What martial arts did Bruce Lee know? None! He only had two years of training from a 3 year course of wing chun which is not martial arts. Bruce was a demonstration nut! He had no real skill
what he did to camouflage his speed is use an electrostatic machine that was used at the hospital that he was taken to when he hurt his back doing what is prohibited from martial artists and that is lifting weights. People are so stupid to worship a dead fool! If you were not programmed by Lee to work out with him he probably could not defeat you. who did he defeat? What Lee did was portray that he fights like he fights in fight scenes. that is so stupid.
