  • Despite pre-contact roots in the plains of Western Canada, and despite standing with the British in the war of 1812 -- the Dakota were labelled American Indians by the Crown. So when a group of Dakota fled to an area near Portage La Prairie, Manitoba after the Dakota War south of the 49th parallel, they were treated as refugees rather than rightful residents. More than 150 years later, Dakota Plains First Nation is hoping for a better deal.
