    For me there weren’t any bad songs or bad performances. The winners I think had the best staging, again not that the rest were bad. A few of these songs are going in my playlist… can I just say that the intro (postcard?) to the first performance, Moisei, who’s in the army, made the situation Ukraine is in very real (not that I speak Ukrainian, but the power of those images). Kudos to Ukraine for trying to bring some normalcy to their lives and showing their strength through this contest and doing it so well. 💙💛

    We Ukrainians wanna try something different other than ethnic and folklore music, and Tvorchi are the perfect choice to show the diversity. They will totally go for a revamp, so this is just a concept for now, and it's good.

    • @ShanesEurovisionReview

      After their slick music video I was unsure whether they would be open to a revamp...after a music video you always assume it's the final version but I agree with you...there is room to improve this song even more - adding some extra backing vocals or another level of production in the chorus will elevate this song further for sure.
      I respect Ukraine's choice to go for a different sound this year! I really want you to bring the same ideas from this staging...please....I love the staging/concept! 💖

My most sincere respect for the wonderful show that they gave us considering their precarious situation. They really are made of other stuff, singing and putting on a show while missiles fall above is heroic. I watched the RUclips stream, absolutely incredible what the producers put on. The only time you could really tell that it was in the basement (or closed off part) of a metro station was when during some of the interviews you could hear the sound of a train passing in the background. Love the staging for this performance, my issue is that the verses and pre chorus are stronger than the chorus itself. The chorus needs a boost of some kind, maybe more backing vocals. It's still catchy though

      @ShanesEurovisionReview  Год назад +3

      You're right it is catchy! Yeah I totally get what you mean...the verses and the part AFTER the chorus are awesome....the chorus does need a bit more of a punch! Its good...but yeah there is room for some improvement in this area to make it pop more!

    I totally agree, I think the staging and performance won them the competitiion. It wasn't on my radar either, I thought it was gonna come down between Jerry and Krut, but when TVORCHI performed I was gripped and they shot up in my ranking. I love the whole atmosphere of their performance.
    I also wonder if Ukranians who voted are aware they've sent a couple of ethnic songs the past couple of years and wanted to send something different to show their diversity.
    I think it's placement in the Grand Final totally depends on it's staging, it could come top ten or bottom ten depending on that.
    So excited we have our first Eurovision song of 2023! (And very surreal to be watching Vidbir from where I live in Liverpool!)

      You're right! I knew I would vote for TVORCHI even before I saw their iconic performance. I'm usually all for authenticity and ethnic music, but songs like this are underwhelming this year. Except maybe Krutь, who had both song and staging powerful, but it's just not for Eurovision. As for Jerry Heil, I love her but I didn't like her song at all. I can't believe it, I was expecting a Jerry Heil win! The song has quite a good hook and is definitely growing on me, whoever said it gave them Belgium 2022 vibes is spot on. I had it as my 8th favourite out of 10, but I do still like the song. The performance/staging was great and elevated the song. (I watched the performances later)
    Ukraine is already in the final so they could have gone for a riskier option. I would have gone all out and chosen Oy Soundsystem/Fiinka (for the potential as I gather the vocals weren't up to scratch) to win. On the other hand though maybe a more radio friendly entry is the right way to go down to aim to get a good result but not win? I wonder if it will be lost in the mix once we have all the songs. Lights off was consistently the favourite when we only had three songs last year but ended up in the bottom of the leaderboard, so who knows?
    It is Incredible that Vidbir went ahead at all, so big respect for that as they could have just internally selected the entry which would have been understandable considering the circumstances. Congrats Tvorchi and good luck from UK!

      @ShanesEurovisionReview  Год назад +1

      After seeing all the live performances today it has massively gone up in my top 10!

      @@ShanesEurovisionReview A revamp is needed definitely but I fundamentally like the song. If it turns out to be a bad year song wise, this will probably be up there in my ranking, but if it's a good year who knows? Estonia's really serving this year (please choose Ollie/Sissi/Bedwetters!) so I'm cautiously optimistic but that might hurt Tvorchi. We also have Fikmas coming very soon, so who knows.

    This will be both Krutь and Heil's last Vidbir appearance. I thought they both did spectacularly well and hope they both can find success beyond Eurovision.

    Ukrainians wanted to show that we have not only folk songs, but also modern ones. Also, this song has a deep meaning, because it is dedicated to the OZOVSTAL fighters ("STAL" in Ukrainian is steel). Also in the song, there is a reference to the Ukrainian response to the Russian warship ("middle finger up in the air", which is painted on the Ukrainian postage stamp), and a stupid thoughtless threat from our neighbor with a nuclear disaster. from my perspective as one of the Ukrainians who voted for Tvorchi in Vidbir:
    i didn't want another song about war that would make our hearts bleed once again. i can't listen to Krutь's song without tears, this is very deep and it hurts. and when i listen to Jerry's song, i feel pain and hatred towards russians as well. i can't stop thinking about everything they did to us, while listening to these songs. and i think it's similar to my fellow Ukrainians. we face this every day of our lives, unlike you non-Ukrainians. we deserve to have something different, "heart of steel"-ish. that's why Tvorchi is the best choice.
    their performance was awesome and stylish (the visuals, omg!). the music is my cup of tea, and i see a lot of symbolism in the lyrics, every line has its meaning. also, they were not trying so hard to be cool on stage. they were cool. and we felt that. i think Tvorchi deserve to represent Ukraine with this song.
    Ukrainian music is not only folk, ethnic elements and sopilka, you know. we already had that three years consecutively, now just as everyone is expecting a dark ethnofolk track about the trauma of war we throw a curveball with some modern polished uplifting soul-pop! Ukraine always brings the unexpected 😁 thank you for your reaction, Shane! hugs from the east of Ukraine 💙💛

    Now the staging definitely helped to elevate it. I would say it was probably the best-staged song of the evening. The verses of the song are also great. But the chorus just feels rather 'flat' compared to the rest of the song. So I am hoping a revamp is done to give the chorus more 'oomph'. Because at the moment the chorus is just ever so slightly bringing it down into 'slightly generic' territory.
    Still, it was a great show and I am still very much in love with Fiinka and "Dovbush" after her performance on Saturday 😍

    I'm surprised this song won. I actually quite liked it but I had written it off on the basis of assuming Krutь, Jerry or perhaps Fiinka was going to win the selection (mostly the first two). When I first listened to the songs, my favourites were this one, krutь and Demchuk (also fully aware that Demchuk's song in particular is very generic and could be heard in Melfest or mgp 😂).
    In terms of this song, the opening instrumental reminded me of the Weeknd the hills or starboy and the singing I felt was somewhat like Usher. I really liked how it felt unique and modern for Ukraine to send a sound like this because even though I don't necessarily think they always send traditional sounds to ESC, I very much associate them and expect them to send traditional sounding songs so in that regard, this is a nice change of pace.
    The staging, I think is really cool, a bit reminiscent of Mans Zelmerlow which I loved when I first saw that. I do think this song is perhaps in need of a revamp just to make it more polished, and perhaps more impactful sonically as atm, people aren't as gripped by the song as they are the staging. They are in a great position now where they have plenty of time to revamp the song and make the visual package even more impactful. I wasn't a huge fan of the styling, I liked the heart embroidery on the shirt which I'm assuming is symbolic of the title and references the bravery and resilience of Ukrainian people. The styling I think should be straightforward enough to improve on.
    Overall, pleasantly surprised Tvorchi won, was more so expecting (and would've been as contented) with Krutь winning and then ofc Jerry was a favourite. completely forgot that Ukraine are automatic finalists so they dont need to worry about qualification. Its extremely early days given that this is our only song so far but in terms of placement, in its current state I see it perhaps mid to top of the right hand side of the scoreboard but I fully expect it to be more competitive once its revamped.
    Also massive props to everyone who organised the show, the set looked brilliant and ngl, put selections like the German and Irish one's last year to shame because it looked so professional and put together, just shows you that other countries shouldn't have excuses about staging an nf.

    Listened to the song a lot before it won, so not as much of a surprise to me, but since this is the first song for Eurovision Ukraine will have PLENTY of time to revamp if there are any problems. Staging-wise, this doesn't need much work.

    In my opinion, Ukraine wanted to show something more to the mass audience and at the same time not what is expected of it. Plus, a song with a hidden connotation for the world and a little hidden reminds of what they asked for at the last Eurovision show about the Azovstal plant. Where many people unfortunately died (

    Credit where it's due, they staged it really effectively and he really sells it. I can't really fault their performance of it. I just wish I could listen to the song without my eye twitching a bit. haha.
    Vidbir did a fantastic job staging their acts this year, especially under the circumstances. There were only a couple of songs that I felt were let down by the staging. The rest were all really well done.

      I need to catch up with the others today. As you said the singer really sells this song and I loved the ideas in the staging. Completely elevated this song for me. As you know...I did not rank it highly going into last night's performance. That's why I guess we need to always remember Eurovision is not just a song contest....it's a show! Also reminds us outsiders can win national finals if they are able to capture a moment on stage!

      @ShanesEurovisionReview  Год назад +1

      @@nemonihil2952 The uniqueness will have to come from the staging I think....you are right...production wise it's not breaking boundaries which we have recently come to expect from Ukraine BUT after watching it again a few times this morning:
      1) His interaction with the screens behind him is captivating - I seriously think bring these exact screens to Liverpool and repeat this sequence
      2) The use of yellow and gas masks to draw on a nuclear theme is super clever - I love the gas masks actually - whilst there was allot yellow and black at Eurovision 2022 (finland for example) this colour scheme and 'toxic' imagery works with the production of the song so well
      3) the dancers and choreography is on point. If someone told me before they were going to use dancers I would have been nervous....but their masks, outfits, choreo and their interaction with the screens was slick and drew your attention in
      I think the performance sells this song. I really don't want Ukraine to change much for Liverpool - the core ideas are there....just make it bigger for a bigger stage!
