This presentation from noted human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson was pretty good, and it reminded me a (in a positive way) of a 1992 documentary film called "Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media" which is based on Noam Chomsky's 1988 book, which is also called "Manufacturing Consent". It also looks like the apprehension from public speaking might be giving her an urticaria outbreak on her upper right shoulder, which is an affliction that I also used to suffer from very badly although I eventually stopped getting urticaria outbreaks a few years after I left upstate New York. PROTIP: My theory is that the reason the urticaria stopped is because I probably stopped eating whatever it was that was in the food I was ordering over in New York that was causing the hives.

Indonesia has 300 ethnics with the differences of languages, religions and customs. Still we can manage as one country after the political economy and crises in 1998. Now Australian can learn how we maintain our diversity and democracy. Thanks for Jennifer Robinson, Australia now can learn how we manage the traditional value of harmony and tolerance, that one of the reason why Indonesia loves to stay in Indonesia and not come to Australia and took the island from the Aborigine.

I, who live in Indonesia, fully understand how difficult to have a constructive enggagement and extend our hands of brotherhoods to Papua when their mind is clouded by propaganda and bias perspective from people who have hidden agenda. The Indonesian government has changed its approach towards papua with special authonomy, put forward welfare of Papuans as first priority, and poured billions of US$ into the provinces.

We learnt so much about separation. We learnt from East Timor and South Sudan. Separation and disintegration doesn't guarantee that we will experience freedom and also development. It's even creating another problem.. Let's support the development in Papua with no hidden agenda. Papua will always part of Indonesia.. Many youth volunteers come from all over in Indonesia trying to assist Papuan fellows. Check out the Indonesia Mengajar and Indonesia Pintar. It shows that we do care about Papua!

In my point of view, freedom won't solve the problems in Papua easily. It's the willingness of my Papuan fellows to live their life out of corruption and go for education. Indonesian government does support development in Papua, you can check on how the government has allocated huge amount of money to our Papuan fellows. Even in almost all prominent university in Indonesia there are many chances for Papuan students to get scholarship. It is a big non sense that Indonesian people don't care.

Indonesia needs to do a better job in countering Corruption as it has the highest rate of corruption in Asia. Benny isn't spreading hatred and Lies he is just speaking the truth. Also Australia has one of the lowest rates of corruption in the world. I think the people of Indonesia need to let go of denial and Nationalism and they should instead stand up for whats right. If the Gov is doing something wrong they should speak out.

This is true, Indonesian's aren't represented fairly on these pages, which makes these commenters look suspiciously like propagandists.
There's many beautiful people there, and if they weren't so scarred of the oppressive regime their live under, and had a less brainwashed education and media, there would be more of them openly demanding peace.
Many there still remember the evil atrocities which they did to their own people not too long ago.

I was there for two years living with the family, very close to the border with PNG. PNG is very very poor compare to Papua. Even people on the street in Papua have more money from so many govt generous aids than people in Java and other area. It's they themselves decide how to use those money. There are many aid program from the Indonesian government for the Papuan, scholarships, and others. Unfortunately the empty promise from people like Benny Wenda has poisoned them with dream of freedom.

Sometimes I wonder what is the real motives of Beny Wenda, is he really fight for the Papuans or he has a personal interest? He's living nicely in England travelling all over the world!! Who do cares about the real Papuans living in Papua? Indonesia!! Because we always and will always consider Papua as Part of Indonesia. Papuans are our brothers and sisters. We never consider race, as Indonesia is a nation with multi ethnic groups. We are not racist, it's never be in our blood!!

If you want to comment about Papua please spend some of your time there, then you have validity to express your opinion. Otherwise it's just bs. Do you think Jennfier's a kind that wants to go remote areas in Papua? The GOI has tried to deliver the Papuan's rights: identity (changed from Irian Jaya), autonomy (Papua's shares of financing has been one of the biggest amongst provinces in Indonesia), but some aspects you can't develop in 5-10 years but the GOI is still making efforts e.g. providing lots of scholarship to Papuan youths. What GOI has done to Papua has been much much much much much 15X better than what the Australian Government done to the Aborigines. The aborigines are the most suppressed people in the world that they are treated like rubbish in their own land. I can say these things because I went to Papua and stayed there for a couple of weeks and lived in Australia as well. I understand Benny Wenda, he's on his stance for what he believes, but Jennifer she's just there to after her short cut to fame.

    • @yelylod3908
      @yelylod3908 10 лет назад +3

Holan Hata. I would like to thank you for your comment about West Papua. First of all, it is true that there are tons of money go to West Papua when there is special Autonomy for The buildings such as roads, bridges, airstrips, houses for the government and others as well. and also scholarships. The special Autonomy were given when the representatives of West Papuans, 100 Team (Tim 100) came to president of Indonesia, Yusuf Kala, officially, wanted to separate from Indonesia, NOT came to ask for their attention or Money or ask for any other.
It is not the case of civil rights movement, equal rights, economical problems, welfare, and other things for the people of West Papua.
The core problem is NOT Human Rights Abuses, Human Rights Violations also but it is the cause of the core problem.
The core problem is The PEOPLE OF WEST PAPUA WANT FREEDOM in their homeland. That is the root problem of West Papua, it will never stop unless you give what they want.
FREEDOM is the Fundamental Rights for all creatures, including HUMAN BEINGS. It is God's given Rights for the people of West Papua to be free and also for other nations as well.
You, non-Papuans don't experience how we feel under the illegal occupation of Indonesia. We are treated badly not as human. They take our resources illegally.
JENNIFER ROBINSON knows what we are having everyday life under the occupation of Indonesia, so what she is talking is TRUE. It is NO different telling other stories base on the fact. That is not JENI speaking but BENNY, even physically, she is Jennifer Robinson.
You can come to West Papua and you will not see or experience how we feel. All your comment is true, whether you have been in West Papua more than 50 years, you will not see it because the people of West Papua will never show how they suffer. You will not feel it unless you are into it. You are not even West Papuan so it is true that you can't see, feel or experience it.
My name is Yely Wenda, from the island of West Papua, Wamena.
      Thank you for you all.

caine martin thank you for your civilised comment. I bet she's spent more time in Oz than in Papua, so in this case she should be more knowledgable and concerned about what happen to Aborigines than to Papuans. Everybody knows Aborigines are the world most brutally treated people, killed and enslaved in their own yard to the point of no return to their life. She should MAKE CAMPAIGN ON THAT first and tell the Australian government to fcuk off from Australia land and grant freedom to the Aborigines to live in and manage their own land. Until that she's just a HYPOCRITE like most of you are, telling people not to steal while you are robbing others..

Erna Wati said we are brothers and sisters. In what way? Indonesian people said Dutch was a colonizer (penjajah) but the reality is that no a single bullet came out from their guns to kill West Papuans during their time. Ironically, Indonesians call us brothers and sisters but they have been killing us since May 1,1963 (50 years now). So, who is actually the colonizer? Benny is just talking about justice. I think all common people around Indonesia will agree with me that we have to develop Papua in all aspects of life. What we don't like in Papua is the existence of military. They have been killing so many people in Papua and they enjoy impunity. Other is racism. Our soccer team Persipura defeated FC Sriwijaya in Palembang. When the second was produced all supporters made sound and yelling like monkey. Last week in Malang when Persipura defeated Arema 2-1. The same thing happened. One nation??

And apparently there is no exciting progress on benny wenda's attempt on whatever he wants to do, for example, statement from UK government about the organization's office in oxford: "We respect the territorial integrity of Indonesia and do not support calls for Papuan independence." source: gov.uk and yes this is related to what have been talking about so i feel sorry for wenda and i hope you understand that papua should stick with indonesia

I am Lucas Wanggai, a Papuan. Do not intervene our Papuan cause Harry, you're also a British imperialist! You know nothing about my Papuan land. Stop commenting! there is no genocide in Papua. We are advancing now in special autonomy. You have no right to speak in the name of Papua.

The Indonesian Gov tried to shut down the Free West Papua campaign in UK and now complaining to the Australian Gov about TED. TED has nothing to do with the Australian Gov. So pretty much by The Indonesian Gov acting like this attacking freedom of speech imagine how bad the situation is for Papuans in Papua under Indonesian law.
