I've seen loads of apple orchards in upstate NY, just south of Lake Ontario, planted with tall-spindle trees. They don't look much like apple trees, until they are LOADED with fruit - THEN, oh boy! It's shocking, having grown up with old-fashioned standard apple trees, to see the new methods (there's another method that makes the tree look more like an umbrella, with all the vertical branches removed and the top ones bent down), but after seeing how productive they are, and how crowded the dwarf trees can be - allowing for many more cultivars per acre, and MUCH easier pruning and picking - I want to try it in my yard with the baby apples and other fruits I'm trying to grow. I'm not a professional orchardist by ANY means, but am 65 and don't need to have to climb a full-size tree, or ANY tree for that matter, although I grew up climbing trees and still love to. There's nothing quite like sitting in an apple tree in full bloom on a warm spring day! It would be impossible in a tall-spindle tree, or the umbrella trees, so I guess I'll have to keep one good old standard tree just for that purpose.

I agree! I’m very impressed with the productivity of high density trees. I think a group of them would be great for urban growers because they take up much less space!
