  • In this week's episode we take a look at the latest addition to the Vic Kick line, the Vic Firth VKB5 bass drum beater. This beater which was developed with the help of legendary drummer Peter Erskine is meant to have an unbelievable balance and throw. With it's large maple shaft and reduced size felt head it has even distribution of weight from top to bottom resulting in smoother action and more control.

    Almost a year later, what are your thoughts on this VKB5 now?

      Ya know, it was and still is a nice piece of kit. It feels great but for me nothing to this day beats the tama iron cobra beater. No matter what pedal I use that beater always seems to make its way on top. It’s light, super durable, and quick. Plus the ability to throw a counter weight on it allows for endless tweaking to get the feel perfect, at least for me.

      The standard one. I believe the model is CB90F

    YES! A mallet! Something that will hold up better than a fluffy yet give you that kinda sound

    Does this hit "softer" and hence more suited to lighter styles?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  6 лет назад +1

      It has a lot of throw so it will hit hard if you want it to as well as hard felt. I’m actually playing it as we speak at a gig. It does have a lot of control though so you can throw it as hard or soft as you wish. The felt is not soft though so I would say it has more attack than a fuzzy jazz style beater.

    Does it feel lighter than Athens big standard Dw beaters?

    • @BeardedDrums

      The only DW bearer I’m familiar with is the standard one that comes with the 9000. It definitely feels lighter than that one.

    alllright!!!nice..does it fit an axis?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  6 лет назад

      It fit my Pearl and Tama so I believe it’s made for universal fit, I wouldn’t think you would have any problems.

      Thanks! I made a conscious effort to keep this one short. I’ve been running between 10-14 minutes per episode and I know that can be a little long. Tried to get right to the point on this one, lol. I really did enjoy playing with it tho.

    You didn't say that you were gonna switch to this beater from now on so maybe it's not so great.

    What happens if the wood breaks? Is the metal shaft going the whole way up through the wood?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  6 лет назад

      I did a little bit of bending and man handling when I received it because I was thinking the same thing. It’s built really well and I don’t think you would have any problems and far as it’s structural strength. You can’t take it apart to see wether the shaft runs all the way up but from the way it felt in the hand I would bet the shaft does go all the way up. Again, I don’t think you would have any problems as far s it breaking. Hope that helps.

    I wish they made a bomb beater version of this with low density but rugged wool.

      If your taking about the big fluffy wool ones I did try the vater one and really liked it.

    Can this fit the tama speed cobra pedal?

    • @BeardedDrums
      @BeardedDrums  6 лет назад +1

      I can’t think why it wouldn’t fit. It fit my Pearl eliminator just fine and I normally use a Tama beater on that pedal so I think it will fit just fine.

    Looks interesting, but I wish that you might have given us a sound comparison with a standard, or your previously used beater.... always great videos Drumbuddy! Also, check out the Kingsmen Beard Club, you just might find something for your beard that you can no longer be without! I am just a consumer and no other interest in Kingsmen, just good products...
