Here’s what I did .. Drilled the shell (Catalina 20x14) with an XLR . Placed the mic on a Kicker 2. Coated PS3 batter and stock reso . Sounds absolutely killer (as a trunk of the car / gigging kit) .. Highly recommended and for the money an absolute no brainer .. Really like your vids, thanks for all the effort and good luck with your work .. 🥂
Thanks for the informative review Mike. I now have one and fitted it to the Kelly Flatz mounting system. The one for the E901 fits the Behringer nicely.
I had been using a Sennheiser e602 for years and a fellow sound engineer suggested the behringer BA19A mike as being one of the best they have heard. I had some Amazon rewards and purchased the mic which was free using the rewards. Around $65. After using it I would have paid twice as much for it because it truly is one of the best kick drum mics I have ever used. I would even put it in the Earthworks SR20LS range.
well.. I have one.. its my main mic-in for BD in my studio. We do have other well known brands BD mics, that cost 3-4x the price of the Behringer (or more)... but the behringer just sounds better for pop, rock, funk and so forth. The only situation where i prefer another mic (D112 or beta52 or others) is for folk-rock, singer-songwriter stuff. Even then it does happen I use the Behringer, and just combine it with a large diaphragm condenser in front of the drum for me its not "good for the price", its simply AWESOME!.. get one! You will not regret it. Enable the EQ switch and you are 90% there for a perfect sound for most genres.
another tuber suggested a separate use case, placing it under the floor tom and aiming slightly up towards the bottom of the snare, to capture those sounds. looks like a great value
Nice! I've had a few people tell me today they ordered one, so maybe I need to get on this Amazon Affiliate link program.... Make some commissions off these orders.
Glad to hear it was helpful! I love it as a contrasting kick mic to more standard options, which is especially useful in a studio/recording environment
I know it kinda defeats the whole convenience aspect, but it would be sick if someone made a holder for the BA that attached to a mic stand so you could place it in front of the kick.
Convenience is only one reason to use a boundary mic, so doesn’t both me, I guess I’d worry about to broad of a sound to be picked up though. I have seen people use boundary mics as room sounds too, but might be hard to isolate just the kick from outside.
I've been looking at this mic for a little while. Nice video and great review. I may have to get one. Personally, I like to use a trigger for my kick and bring my own powered speaker. It takes a little longer to set up than a microphone but it is well worth it. I should probably do a video on that. hmm.
I'd highly recommend it! I haven't messed around too much with triggering, but I enjoy the genuine response of a microphone, and this is probably a good balance of the two.
I should have some sort of affiliate link, but I don’t, so buy it from wherever you like. It’s a nice mic, I’ve enjoyed using it on the last number of gigs and just throwing it in the drum.

Thanks I just bought one. I have a Sonor kit with a 16" kick, 10" tom, 14" fl tom. I use a 12" Pork Pie little squealer snare,. The drums sound really good on their own but I was interested in these boundary mics
Great review and demo! Thanks for posting this! I purchased this mic several months ago, but couldn't use it with my interface. I was wondering what you are using for a mixer or interface and if this mic is power hungry and not compatible with all phantom power sources. I haven't found anything on this problem and wondered if you had experienced any issues with a stead 2khr tone from it. That is what happens after a couple minutes of use on my Presonus Audiobox usb interface. I also wondered if you have a video on your gear rack that is on wheels beside you at the kit with your computer, and it looks like some additional gear. I would like to put together something similar, and would be interested in your setup as an option to consider. Thanks and keep up the content!
Sorry, I don’t have too much experience with the audio box, so I can’t help there other than to say I’ve not had an experienced like that with this mic. As for the cart, it’s just a small cart from Target that I put a slab of wood on top so I could put something like a laptop on when needed.
Hi enjoy your posts. Watch most of them. Just bought this mic. Wondering which setting you prefer and why? I'm not sure what would be best for me. Thanks.
So, I purchased this to go for my cajon that I use as a kick drum. It picks up sound, just weak (i used a looper) but i noticed the light doesn't come on with mine? is that an indicator that something is wrong or off?
Mike is correct in asking about phantom power. This mic is a condenser, which means it needs phantom power in order to operate. Any mixer you use should have a switch for phantom power.
It could, but this kind of mic, I think is best served with some EQ/processing. So I wouldn’t run right out of that into your headphones, I’d try to get some sort of processing on it first.
I have tried the Shure, and I think it’s probably a preference thing, I actually prefer the Behringer, and another thing I thing prefer is Behringer’s can accept an XLR right into the mic, the Shure has to use an adapter and just feels like extra work.
I was surprised by how you put it on a towel inside the kick drum. From doing a little reading on how these are designed, it seems like the goal is to have it rest against a hard surface like a wooden floor. That way the "boundary effect" it's named after can happen.

Cool idea, I’ve never gone that far into drilling an XLR for a shell, but I love the idea!
