Every video I’ve watched of the Behringer it seems to capture every frequency that appeals to me

excellent review ! I have the Sennheiser. used to use a Shure 91 but found the Senn was fatter and more articulate (Mapex Saturn/Yammie Stage customs). Like the other dude said, keep the Senn at home and Beh for gigs.

I use as little muffling as possible and don't bury the beater at least 80% of the time. I would be curious on how these would perform on a more open sounding bass drum.

Great video…..I just picked one up got it on Amazon a great deal for 65 bucks. It’s awesome. Quick question what size is that pillow you’re using?

Interesting clip. I prefer the BA 19A if you are only going to use one mic in the bass drum as you get plenty of low end, that seems to be missing a bit from the e901. On the other hand the 901 has more attack so will cut through the mix better, but you probably need a second mic outside to get a decent low end when using the 901. In all the clips I've heard of the BA 19A, it sounds better with the mid scoop switched on rather than left flat. I reckon using the mid scoop to cut some of the boxy mid range and over tones and maybe adding a bit of a high shelf to boost the attack, you should get a killer bass drum sound with just the cheap BA 19A. The BA19A worked especially well in the 16" bass drum making it sound like a proper bass drum. The e901 sounded very thin and boxy in comparison!

This review was very helpful. I just purchased the Behringer today no less than 15 min before coming across your review. Now I'm second guessing my purchase. I can return it if need be but I can't afford the Sennheiser, the Shure or any higher end bass drum mic at this time.
I got hopeful though after hearing your comparison when I heard both without any eq'ing and processing. It's not that I couldn't hear that the Sennheiser was a much better mic but the Behringer sounded more like what I was looking for. A deep low end. I had even been mulling over taking an old offbrand 10" drum sitting in my friends garage and putting a cheap speaker in it as a DIY subsonic mic.
But when you EQ'ed them the Sennheiser was in a completely different league. The Behringer sounded muddy. I guess that's what you meant by having more to work with.
When I bought the Behringer this earlier my plan was to put it inside the bass drum and put my AKG D112 in the porthole so I could get deep low end and a good solid punch. I'm not sure If I should do it the other way around or go back and try to put together a DIY subsonic mic.

You've fully clipped the audio on the Sennheiser, you can hear the distortion on each hit. Either that or it was knocking on something in the drum - they definitely do not normally sound like that.

I've checked the audio waveforms and the output from the DAW, its definitely not clipped. There is a heavy beater on the drum plus a dampener on the edge of the head, mic is resting on a soft pad/cushion. Could be an anomaly in the upload compression

@@BandOnABudgetNZIt's not clipping at all. It's just really bright sounding so the beater is really pronounced

@@dnadna9317 oh yeah that too. Dry mix if pretty flat but an EQ on it has a boost around 8khz I think from memory 🤔

I can understand people liking the sound of the Behringer more as a standalone (solo'ed) sound but it captures too much of the thumpy low end and that's not what I'd ever use a Kick In microphone for. I use the inside mic to get snap and beater sounds from the skin, and the outside to capture the low end thud...
But in saying that, on a budget if you're restricted to one microphone for the kick drum I'd use the Behringer and be happy. But with a nice outside mic, blending a e901 in.. *chefs kiss*

Love it, the Behringer is great to take out to gigs if you're doing lots of local shows, dive bars, etc. Sennheiser is the one I would keep at home for recording for the most part. Overall I think the Behringer mics are great for local bands first starting out and want to up their live sound game since many venues don't have mics and for venues wanting to have their own house mics but can't afford to spend $1000 just on drum mics. Between this particular Behringer and their BC1200 7pc drum mic kit, which retails for about $130 USD, of which you can use the kick mic it comes with as a floor tom mic. Any venue or band can have a proper drum mic setup that will sound much better than not having anything in the PA. Any sound guy with their salt will also not have a problem working with them and getting them to sound good as long as the drum kit itself sounds good.

Can you make a video on a budget mic?

Honestly, the price of the behringer is so low. I'd get them both.
The Sennheiser facing the beater since it captures that muuuuuuuuuch better. Then the Behringer facing the other end just to capture the lows.

I would like to add some note on this mic. No critique on the video and this really is an amazing mic for the price. First, gain is SUPER hot and you may even need to turn your gain knob all the way DOWN depending on genre played (mine is metal) to stay out of clipping without a limiter in line-. This is a large diaphragm condenser mic at the end of the day and you don't have to crank gain as hard as a normal , non-phantom powered dynamic mic, for example. If you are using this mic for metal/hardcore kick drums, the best way to boost the Vinnie Paul-esue attack of the beater to the head , the key is to use the mic stand mounting hole on the back and place it parallel to the batter head 4"-6". I wasted a whole recording session because the metal style of music I was capturing did not get the desired attack sound when just laying flat on a pillow with the mic pointing toward the top tom mount alone.

This is funny. I can understand people being apologetic for the e901 but it is embarrassing to try to do that...
The "crappy" cheap BA19A sounds like a KICK mic. The Sennheiser sounds like a SM57 inside a kick drum.
So PLEASE!!! it's ok if the cheap one kicked butt.... The D112 was popular yet sounds like trash to me. Can't stand it.
I'm a Sennheiser fanatic but owning the 602 and this one, I can tell you that they are way too clickety. More for Metal and stuff like that. Signal is too low and you need to have very good pre amps so you don't get too noisy with the Sennheiser's kick mics...
Sennheiser drum mics are no longer in my go-to mics to record drums. Specially the kick mics.
So get it and don't worry about it..

Completely changes the sound, but it works, if you don"t want that much attack.

Yeah get a much bigger rounder sound if you don't bury the beater. 👌🏽
