I had a Hotstream electric water heater from 11/77, and it lasted until November or December of 2018! It started slowly leaking. It was only serving the laundry room when I got the house in 2005. My main water heater is another Hotstream which is gas-fired, and it is from 1991!

Mine is 34 years old, Glass lined Electric. Other than replacing both the heater coils in the last 10 years it's worked fine.

Good to know that Louisiana has high quality water. My water heater (in Louisiana) is 20 years old and I just changed the anode rod. The old anode rod looked similar to the one you showed, maybe not quite as bad.

So there's hope for my water heater that 24 years old. I changed the anode rod 4 years ago and dip tube 7 years ago. Fingers crossed!

I live in hawaii and cant get over the fact that where you live they put hot water heaters in the attic. What happens when it leaks???Would think that would be disasterous

They are installed sitting in a sheet metal pan that is piped to the outside. Modern code requires a 1" drain.

@@DanEBoyd Had that happen with a water heater in the walk-in closet of my apartment. I was out of town, there was a malfunction, & the pressure valve (did its job and) started spraying hot water all over the place. Half the stuff in my closet was ruined; but it was my downstairs neighbor who took it on the chin. They lost about half their bedroom furniture & the contents of of two closets, & it took the landlord about a week to replace sheetrock & make other repairs. It was a disaster, and a stone mess.
