In order for the steel to harden the carbon needs to be there in high enough quantity to be pulled to the surface through quenching to form a martensite structure. There is a process called case hardening, where the surface of the metal is changed chemically by introducing a high carbide or nitride content after heating, and then quenching. There's a commercially available powder compound for just such a process.
The only time you need it O'Reillys is closed, but it's cool.. Cuz then you only need a drill, a grinder, a welding thing, a bike chain, and a freakin torch, bro! Oh yea, and all the leftover nuts and bolts from your brother's 92 Integra..

@@darksoul7024 he literally use some of the most common tools and around $15 of parts to make something that normally cost 100 or more in store. And if you got spare parts laying around you could use them to make it and not spend a dime.
It can of course be case hardened, but if they had done that off camera, the metal would be grey and mottled before quenching, and in any case it would not be a remedy for the lack of bending strength of the mild steel angle.
As even an amateur metal worker I would like to analyze this video 1. Those welds are faked to heck and back, welds don't just appear 2. Why torch the L beam, like if you're trying to temper it you have to do it more than once, and just heating it will cause it to become tougher yes but also more brittle so if it gets damaged it might just snap and not deform 3. That sort of chain is IMO too expensive to use on this 4. Anytime I've replaced bearings you can't or don't use the old ones so just use the dang angle grinder to cut them off, no assembly required
Heat treating and quenching in oil only work on high-carbon steel (aka tool steel). Normal hardware store bolts and brackets (made of mild steel) don’t benefit from heating and quenching-they’ll be the same before and after. Yet another reason to buy a puller instead of putting together a janky one that’s gonna snap or bend when you put pressure on it.
To be fair to them... DIY doesn't mean cheaply made with minimal tools. It just means he did it himself and didn't just buy one from a shop. Even if it is pointless.
Реально чуваку делать нехер. Себестоимость изготовленного творения высокая + время + затраты на грелку и электричество. В половину, есле не больше, проще купить китайский ширпотреб, что бы раз в год подшипник снять. А если подшипник по уму насажен, то уголочкам загнутым в тисках там делать нечего.

You harden all the metal bits with oil quenching but ive went through making one of these with unhardened steel and the chain broke.. you can make the stuff outta armor plate and the sheet metal with brittle bearing guides holding the chain together is gonna snap and pull apart easy….

Первая мысль : смысл проводить закалку болта, если они сделаны из конструкционную стали которая не калится? Вторая мысль : возможно я чего то не знаю пойду погуглю. Вывод - смысла от его закалки либо равен нулю, либо только несёт вред. Обоснования : зашкаливают(если необходимо) только сталь с содержанием углерода больше 0.45% в некоторых болтах/гайках/шпильках используется таковая (класс прочности для оных 8.8+), но в большинстве своём они уже имеют заводскую закалку. Поэтому - если в видео сталь меньше 45, то смысла 0, если 45, то считай он убрал заводскую закалку

You can rent slide hammers and puller kits from part stores, often times for free. Hardening the angle did nothing cause its mild steel, you didnt need to sharpen or harden the first bolt. You're a joke, but it's not like you have everyone telling you that every day

How? How will it blind you? If you use safety glasses\goggles like your supposed to you shouldn't be hit by the chain.. plus the chain is only a few inches long.. do you plan to have your face right beside it???

@@kimsungggillli that's not the issue though. If you work with tools there are three basic safety items you must wear at all times. Steel toe boots, ear protection and eye protection. It does not matter which tool you use, you must always wear that. And even store bought tools can break too. Accidents happen. But if you have eye protection on, then you should be fine as long as your face is far enough out of the way encase the angle iron slipped.

Mild or not, might not harden as much as high carbon steel, but now it's harder than when it started.

You can rent slide hammers and puller kits from part stores, often times for free. Hardening the angle did nothing cause its mild steel, you didnt need to sharpen or harden the first bolt. You're a joke, but it's not like you have everyone telling you that every day

you got lucky. Nut threads don't always line-up that way. Put them on the All-thread first and then put them in the pipe.

How? How will it blind you? If you use safety glasses\goggles like your supposed to you shouldn't be hit by the chain.. plus the chain is only a few inches long.. do you plan to have your face right beside it???
@@atomiccanadian5744 Oh, that's a good point. I wrote a comment without much thought. But if you care about safety, you would have bought a product certified for safety at a hardware store and used it. Thank you. I used a translator because my English is not good.
@@kimsungggillli that's not the issue though. If you work with tools there are three basic safety items you must wear at all times. Steel toe boots, ear protection and eye protection. It does not matter which tool you use, you must always wear that. And even store bought tools can break too. Accidents happen. But if you have eye protection on, then you should be fine as long as your face is far enough out of the way encase the angle iron slipped.
Because I (a random, average person) totally have the knowhow and tools to do this
