Hi April. Fluval should be used for propagation, not as a permanent substrate. Once rooted, the plant should be transferred to your Pon mix or whatever your substrate of choice is. I always transfer my plants to Pon with a tiny bit of Fluval mixed in. I have had tremendous success with that process.
It's known for being a propagation substrate, but not appropriate for long term growing. Which you obviously realized finally lol I've commented that before, but I know comments get lost sometimes :) It breaks down over time and turns to mud so it can become too dense for a lot of roots It is VERY good for rooting cuttings and corms though :)
Fluval breaks down with watering as its meant for fish tank n aquarium plants. When it breaks down it essentially acts like plain soil with nutrient content but no aeration, no chunky bits for epiphytes or aroids whose roots need something to grab on. So many people use it to propagate but you shouldn’t keep it in fluval for longer than 1-2 months because eventually the roots will grow thin and scraggly because of no chunky bits n aeration as fluval breaks down and compacts. Hope that helps😁
Btw.. Your alocasia jacklyn is huge. Mine's is almost that tall. I have two stocks in one container. Have two metal rods for support. Didn't see yours having need of any. 👍🏾 (Must have a better kind of air quality over there..?) Haha
April if you have Tree Fern Fiber, try mixing it with the Fluval. Sometimes it has to be airy as fluval can be dense since it is not fully in water like an aquarium. I tried that with a Jade Scindapsus that would not grow and that thing is thriving. I just removed the mix and put it in a sandy mix. My Obovata bloomed for the first time this year! I think it was the fertilizer but none of the others bloomed. I was so proud! They love being outside!
@@aprilbrooks Please order the Tezula brand. I have tried the fluffy. I have a bag of the gritty but did not try it yet. Maybe that might be better for aeration but I can't attest to it. Don't get the Fernwood. It is over priced with tons of twigs if you don't like that.
Great content!! I literally just talked about this same issue in my most recent video!! I had to snatch a lot of plants out of stratum, i guess i left them in too long!😂 I hope yours recover and thrive!!
You know what I experienced the same thing so I would mix perlite with the fluval stratum or I would mix pin with it , also I noticed if you root you cuttings in fluval then you should probably pot it in pon for best results or some kind of semi hydro vibes .
Did you by chance check for flat mites on your hoya? It may be that as well as the lack of nutrients in the fluval (unless of course you have been fertilizing them). Great video! Thank you!
Girl! That sucks! Mine (anthurium, monsteras, philos) have been in fluval with drainage and theyre all doing great and growing. I fertilize every time i water and so far so good. 🤷🏼♀️💋
@@aprilbrooks awesome! that’s definitely a reason why I’m sick of it! 😅 I found a diy pon mix I want to do. I’m scared to put my monstera mints in it though cause those rot easily 😬
April has anyone told you that you’re a friggin genius? I’m looking around at my plants in Fluvall like….🤔👀🪴🧐 wait…is that why you guys are t doing anything in the growth department… I’m going to start switching some of or all of mine into pon and leca. It does get the roots started but then…nothing…-_- You’re a genius. Luv your videos. ❤

Yes I’ve come to realize that lol good for short term not for long 🫶🏽🌱
Fluval is ferilized and its bad when you going propagate.
I learned something new today, I never heard of Fluval. Good thing that you noticed and pivoted.

Yesss so glad I know this now 😂 it has re-rooted my philodendron so well but now they’re looking a little odd haha

Awww thanks, I actually filmed this two weeks ago 🤫 I have a plant haul coming this week though! 🌱🎉

Thank you so much for this video!
Thanks for watching 🫶🏽🌱🥰
Works great in my planted tank. :)
Yeah, if I had a tank I would definitely use fluval 🐟🐠😝

My Hoya probably do have flat mites lol how would I get rid of them, do you know? Thanks in advance! 🫶🏽🌱

Drainage would definitely help haha
I tought this was aquarium substrate??
It is lol
Do you have all your plants in pon? I’m sick of soil 😂
Yes lol I switched them all a couple years ago. I can’t stand fungus gnats!

U should get a thing of water next time and just rinse ya roots there for the fluval to come off
Lol I thought about it but fluval is so dirty 😆
