      Soil isn't uniform, so it erodes slightly in random spots. Then fluid physics happens as explained here. Nifty, right?

    Question: Does an oxbow lake take millions of years to form or is it only one year or several months?

    • @prinz.509
      @prinz.509 4 месяца назад

      Millions as it takes a long time for the river to recede the dirt

    • @spycrab3723
      @spycrab3723 4 месяца назад +3

      it depends on the type of soil and river. it can take a few years, to decades, to centuries.

    • @Dr_Hurt
      @Dr_Hurt  4 месяца назад +21

      From a geological perspective, it happens very quickly-- decades. There is a good time lapse showing this process on Ucayali River from Google Earth here: ruclips.net/video/nGJXxAZPm8M/видео.html
      It is also interesting to look at the border between Louisiana and Mississippi; you can see that the border reflects the old course of the Mississippi River, but it has changed dramatically over the past centuries.

    Oxbow lakes are formed when a river's meander gets too wibbly wibbly wobbly to maintain the course it's on
    The main flow of the stream diverts itself accordingly, leaving the oxbow lake behind but here's my question, son
    What the hell's an oxbow
    Are our bovine friends fashioning weaponry?
    Someone should tell me, do I need to buy a shield?
    Oxes just ain't known for their dextrous ability
    You need to watch out around them or you might lose an eye
