I have a 1974 Toro 726 (Mod31763) I got for free, so no complaints in that department. However, when I drained the oil, about 1/2 pint (yep, that's all) of jet black think oil came out. Just before that I did verify it started, but it smoked like a Big Boy locomotive. I pulled the head off and found a few large scores on the cylinder wall and believe it needs oversized by first boring out the cylinder. Have you ever done this? I"m looking for a video that shows the process. Any help is greatly appreciated. I really want to bring this ole' machine back to life, as 'she' saw it in the 70's. Thanks!

Why would the cams have been too tall?

So the valves can become to tall because the face that meets the valve seats wear. So to fix that to grind the end of the valve that touches the tap-it / lifter. That will bring the valves face against the valve seat creating a tight seal.

A classic, they just don't make them like this anymore.... pre safety, pre emissions, so loud it scares the neighbors'.... dogs .....to bad you skipped the valve removal and grinding process, mine is losing control compression and I suspect that is the problem.

Yeah, I had someone stop by as I was pulling them out which would have been annoying to listen to. 😆 The grinding process I thought I filmed but apparently I forgot how to us my camera that day
