We do have two Colman stoves a big standing one. That’s is in storage and need to bring it here. We also have a small one that is here and all I need to do is hook up the propane. Just having the electricity just for a few hours was very eye opening. I need to learn to do a lot on my own Incase Deric is not around.

I think it was winter 2002 and we had a doozey storm that knocked the power out. I live in a very rural area of Central Oregon, nearest neighbor can't be seen but only a mile down the road. I ran about 5 miles out of town to my well stocked Mormon friends house for lamp oil (she taught me after how to be prepared) and stopped by another friend to check on her and her toddler and 3 day old baby. Both our husbands are truck drivers and were on the road. She took batteries out of the baby seat for a flashlight but was worried about getting cold because they did not have a wood burning stove. So an hour later they came to my house and we had a big camp out in my living room. 2 moms 5 kids one dog and a memory we will remember forever.

After the power outage last February here in TX, we finally took this seriously and got it together. I already had food storage but we found through the process that we were not prepared. We’re prepared now. We have a home safety review scheduled every quarter where we not only check all our supplies but we go through procedures on how to do things like draining the pool equipment and hooking up the generator. My husband travels for our business so we have to be ready if he’s here or not

A suggestion for the freezers. Freeze a cup of water. The put a coin on top. Then you know if the freezer has started to defrost if the coin is at the bottom of the cup.

@@carolynb1547 I recently found a great tip for that. Simply season your food AFTER cooking. If u cook your food without all of the spices, it won't be so fragrant. If you're constantly cooking fragrant food, then people will know you're still eating well and will be interested to see what you have and possibly take it from you.

We have multiple generators, including one that hooks up to our tractor. The larger ones, run our entire house, and require multiple steps. I asked Chris to write out directions for each one, step by step, (you can even take pictures, of certain buttons and switches, to look for), print everything out and laminate it, and attach to whatever machine you are dealing with. Chris has even recorded, a step by step video for family we have loaned generators to, so they could easily follow along, and safely operate it.

Our power was out for 14 hours due to the recent nor’easter. While I had plenty of led lanterns, I had never used my little butane stove. I was amazed at how easy it was to use. It was a good time to see what worked and what did not. Even though it was chilly in the house, I did not try my Mr. Buddy heater. I realized I should get a 12 foot hose and filter so I can use my 20 gallon propane tank.
I also realized having all of my small propane bottles in the shed was not a good idea. A small tote near the back porch should house about nine of them.

In MA we just had a Nor'easter and lost power for 3 days. If anyone can I strongly recommend getting a generator. We just had our electric panel updated and bought a generator a few months ago. It was so nice not to worry about the cold food and to have heat. Having canned goods on hand worked out great because we could only use the top of our gas stove without electricity. These days it's good to be prepared for anything.

If our power goes out we do have a generator, but we only use it for long emergencies. I could use the burner on the side of my bbq. We also have an outdoor burner aka fish cooker I could cook on. My husband got a Blackstone grill we could use too plus a coalman stove. If we lose power we also lose our water since we are on a well, that part sucks. Thankfully we haven't lost power for more than a few hours in this house. My mom was once out of power for almost 2 wks, she cooked steaks and such in her fireplace using a cast iron skillet. We did loan them our generator but it couldn't run everything in their house. Make sure your chickens have roosts inside the coop especially with winter coming.

When you cook the eggs in your home you dispose of the eggs in the trash can correct well found out that if you give the egg shells back to the chickens it gives the eggs a bit of the strongest shell the next time when they come out of the chicken a calcium boost some people might think it's disgusting but actually it does work

    • @framseen2
      @framseen2 3 года назад

Yes that's correct! But you do have to make sure that you crunch the shells up really well before you give them to the chickens, otherwise they will start eating their own eggs because they get used to eating the shells that look like eggs. We learned the hard way on that one 😜 once a chicken starts eating their eggs you can't teach them not to

We lost power for 8 days in Florida after hurricane Irma. The heat and humidity were worse than the cooking without power 🥵. It definitely showed us what worked and what didn’t. I have since bought a solar shower lol. After being in the heat all day, ice cold water for a shower doesn’t feel as good as you might think 🥶.

That's cool the water works while electric is out, we are on a well and its always something we dont have when the power blows.

We had our power go out for over a week on Christmas in the 1990's and we used our gas grill to cook on and the wood stove to cook on as well as heat the house. We bought a generator since then, but we still have our wood stove upstairs to use if it became necessary for heating and cooking. We cooked our entire Christmas Day dinner on the woodstove that year.

Good learning experience for all of us. Our well pump is electric so we lose water when our electricity goes out.since I'm diabetic, I had to use our camper refrigerator to keep my insulin in. I always have all my lanterns, candles and flashlights in one area.

So with no power a fully stocked freezer unopened will stay frozen for over 7 days without power our electric co-OP told us that. We live in the boondocks of upstate ny so if we loose power we loose everything. Thank goodness I have a gas stove. Just an FYI about your freezer. Also here is a quick and easy cornchower recipe. Half pound bacon cooked crisp and crumbled set aside save half the drippings, to that add 1-2 large onions chopped, saute til translucent turn off. In separate pot peel and chop about 4-6 yellow flesh potatoes just slightly cover them with chicken stock cook til tender, DO NOT DRAIN. Add potatoes and stock to onions put on simmer, now add 3 cans whole corn juice and all and 3 cans creamed corn stir til blended add 1t pepper, then add 1 and 1/2 cups heavy cream or half and half heat but do not boil serve top with crumbled bacon! This soup is AMAZING we read it with crusty bread. Everyone asks for this recipe. I dont6 add any salt because the bacon and the stock and canned veg have salf in them you can add it either at the table or to taste while cooking. ENJOY1❤

This was a great unexpected video. I’m so thankful you captured the moment. It’s that feeling we all get when the power is out and need to stay calm , then the realization of your frig, freezer , and all your food sets in . 🥶 Thank you Kimmie. Purchasing a generator has been on my mind for my daughter and i with my 2 years of prepping ,but how does one do it when you live in a second story apt?😳

We just experienced a 36 hour power outage. We had a very bad storm here in Massachusetts. We do have a generator, so we didn’t lose any food. The stores have been mobbed with people having to restock everything.

I cannot afford a good generator and fortunately the area we live in rarely has outages. We keep extra propane tanks for our gas grill, which has the side burner. So we can cook. Lots of heavy blankets, working on a good wool blanket.

That’s good that you have water. My parents have well water so when the power goes out no water since you need electricity to pump it out of the ground! They have a generator. I get nervous when the power goes out in our house we have a sump pump in the basement and it would flood the basement without it! We do have a battery back up on it! We just got solar panels on our house so shouldn’t have any problems with that anymore!

A few years ago we had a giant storm that knocked out our power for over 3 days(we live in a very rural area). We heat with a coal stove so we had no heat. We have a small generator that can run our coal stove thankfully. I took my kids to the next town to my dads house the first day( it went out in the middle of night), because they had power in town. The second day, we went to the hotel my uncle managed in another town, because our neighbors were there so the kids could play in the pool. They had to be somewhere with power because of the needs of their disabled son. We ended up crashing there for the night, while my husband stayed home to keep the stove going and be with the animals. The 3rd we went to a friend's house with power. I had stopped at home on the way to grab dinner ingredients and the lettuce in my fridge had stayed so cold it was frozen in the middle!

My husband died 5 years ago and I’m just getting my big generator next week. Had an electrician put in a second box so I can run the house and well pump on it. It’s been a steep learning curve (am studying the manual now) but don’t let your husband being alive stop you from taking on that knowledge.
