I do too, but at the same time, these big orgs, regardless of game, are the ones keeping these players playing. I doubt we’d have as many dedicated players and fans if we only had teams like Final Boss and Str8 Rippin around. And I’d argue that all of these teams were those weird orgs at one point, but we turned them into celebrities. It’s just what happens when things get popular.

The biggest issue with esports currently in my opinion is franchising. Forcing orgs to pay millions of dollars to participate in a league thats costing developers millions and operating at a loss is absolutely killing alot of these games.

@@tiburc10 Except for world wide tournaments it always has been full of thrash amateur teams. Giving amateur teams the chance to play and learn gives us a better tournament setting and better players in general. So many no name players and teams in CS just go big. Also franchising is killer in esports, there are not enough player slots so orgs don't wanna risk using rookies or scouting them. Eventually you'll just get recycled veterans being just as bad as current amateur teams.

Riot have used every method to prop up the eSports scene, that propping up is now coming to a end as they big methods they used was creating hype, hype crowds don't last and they're leaving now.
That's one problem, the biggest problem is the game itself, had they kept the original agents for 2-3 years without adding anymore they may have a had game that could be played as a eSport, but just like Blizzard, Riot don't understand that you cannot have a tac FPS eSport that has a new agent added in frequently destroys a mature meta and all it does is create chaos and randomness, randomness is not good for any eSport or Sport, not to mention this game is just straight up terrible to watch which they can never fix that problem.
However we know why they want more agents, to sell more skins of course.
The difference between CS and Valorant is that CS has never had a advertising campaign, the whole scene is built by the community, you cannot replicate it, CS shares the basics of a real sport, everyone can play it, everyone can understand it with little time investment, it's the football of eSports, the simplicity and lack of meta shifts, lack of heroes/agents is the reason why it will outlive even the biggest esports such as DotA 2 and LoL.

They make agents like Deadlock thinking people are going to be big braining and it's going to be a super cool specialized agent whereas in reality if you don't want to F around you're gonna pick the same established meta comp 10/10 times. And then those agents rot for like a year with no buffs. It took them this long to actually nerf their mascot character because having other viable and balanced duelists is less vital than pissing off a bunch of fanboys and fangirls over their 2D character personality cult.

The only game I can think of that has any chance at pulling it off is maybe CS with its long history, but Valve doesn’t want to do that, so I doubt we’re gonna see a proper franchised esports league until we’re in our retirement homes assuming these games even make it that far.

Trying to be a pro in Valorant is much more difficult than in CS2, you burn out much faster since there are only 3 international LANs, you miss the classification in a split and you waste half a year...
while in CS2 you have tier 1 events almost all year round. you can miss a couple without it meaning a bad year

While Valve's system isn't perfect, their pretty much hands-of approach is so much better than franchise system that everybody else use.
I've said it before the whole lol franchising began that it's a very bad band-aid that will not only fail to do anything, it will make things even worse. Haven't watched any lol games ever since the franchise starts.

    • @WARnTEA

I don’t think its really their fault because they were copying the closest analog which is Physical Sports. However its obvious now that it is a bad idea and maybe by the time Overwatch League was made you could have had enough data to understand that franchise leagues are doomed to fail.
The problem with Valves model is that it is really hard for esports pros to make money. Csgo and Dota teams owe a lot to League of Legends, because it was the perceived stability of a franchise system that encouraged teams to invest money into esports and growth. Before this happened you had the classic tale of the iBuypower bans which were heavily influenced by the fact that no one was making money in esports at that time (the contract was literally just covering the cost of flights and giving the players 100% of the cut of any prize money, and this is how esport orgs had been run in the west for over a decade at this point, I don’t know enough about old starcraft korea to say that they operated the same way, but its possible). Just 3 years later LoL announced franchising.
Valve’s model essentially preys on the players, but in exchange players are given better access towards becoming a pro since a new team could play in an open tournament and earn the right to play at the next major.
However since League gave investors an end goal beyond winning a tournament’s prize money, many orgs ramped up their spending and that bled into other esports.

PPV will never happen unless orgs want to kill their games. Last time I checked traditional sports don't do PPV. This isn't MMA where you get 5 fights a year and this being the only way for them to make money. Do you think NBA or football would have the same amount of following if it required everyone to pay individually for each match? Riot and the orgs have ways of making money without it alienating 90% of the viewers. Team skins, battle passes, sponsors, merch, live shows, etc. Every player should be required to make content and to grow their brand and the brand of their team.

Ive said it before and ill say it again. You cannot CREATE a successful esport. All successful esports were based on games people otherwise enjoyed. Dota, game mode from warcraft. Cs 1.6 just a halflife mod that took off. Starcraft, first game was successful because it was fundamentally a fun game, they tried to make the second one an esport first and a fun game second. It flopped quickly. Overwatch, one of the biggest forced memes of an esport to ever exist. Businesses are really trying to capitalize on peoples hobbies the complete wrong way. Idk how they dont see it.

Valorant is hugely successful as an esport though. There are hundreds of thousands of viewers -- it has literally succeeded in that regard. People WANT to watch the game, they WANT to watch streamers. Same thing for League. The problem isn't that, the problem is that Riot tries to push for WAY too big of a scene that isn't sustainable. The same thing happened in CS for a while too.

I am definitely bias… but from my perspective the best esport system we have is counter strikes. Yes there are shitty esport orgs there too… but I sometimes think valve does a better job mitigating some of this bs than it’s competitors by not being overly involved. Let me know if I’m wrong 😊

    • @KamiCS2

Valve / CS is one of the most mature types in this scene.. I don't think you're wrong. It's been a couple of years and I'd still like to say that there is interesting new content in Valorant - but there really isn't. Riot seems to be sticking to their LoL approach (and I wont argue that it works - at least in that game), but it doesn't work in Valorant.
Then again, I'm fairly biased on the part, myself.. still, I've been saying from the start that e.g. Valorant's L0 access will not fix any type of cheater issue, and here we are, people are increasingly realizing that even though they may think Valorant is "completely free of cheaters", that's not true & the lack of a replay system is merely a move by Riot to make sure this isn't seen as blatantly as it would be, say, in CS instead (which on the matter is not better in any way, but it is far more transparent).

I agree, although I prefer playing Valorant. There always seems to be something you can work on in Valorant so long as you aren’t mindlessly spamming jett or reyna and complaining that the game is boring. Also I just prefer the gunplay more, I like tapping, bursts and only going for headshots and CSGO is not that. CSGO has worse first shot accuracy than Valorant and the answer for basically every gunfight is to stop and fullspray until the enemy dies.
Watching Valorant is so bad. When I was playing CSGO I actually enjoyed watching some streamers that were gold nova and tournaments were always fun. (Also maybe this is a bad take but I preferred the time when betting skins on games was legal, I don’t like how people used this as a form of gambling money and matchfixing but I actually felt invested in the Tier 2/3 semi-pro scene because you could bet on them and it was fun watching them grow. It created basically a micro-storyline for me. An ethical alternative would maybe be for valve to create a way to bet on games in the client giving each person like 10coins for each day they log on and once you earn like 1million coins you get to open a rare skin case that is only available through bets, you can’t buy coins or sell them, so matchfixers wouldn’t be able to earn money just from one game, they would have to fix like hundreds of games and then they still aren’t guaranteed to earn a skin worth money from the rare box)
Anyway, it actually annoys me that a lot of the popular variety streamers love playing valorant because I hate watching them play valorant, it is not fun. However I may be biased since I am a much higher rank than them, but even when watching pros to learn from them I often found myself not caring.
With that being said, I definitely think Valorant is more fun to watch than a Moba, because to some degree Valorant limits the amount of abilities and effects. Where Mobas are rainbow vomit 24/7 and you can’t understand why a team wins a teamfight. In Valorant there can be a lot of effects happening on the screen at one time but you can usually understand why one team wins the fight. Also, after the early round ability spam abilities stop being used and the game devolves into gun duels which can be pretty hype sometimes, and easier to understand as a viewer.
